Crif Dogs is a really cool little place tucked away at the end of St. Mark's near the park - you can find it by the "Eat Here" hot dog signs. I've always found the counter girls to be friendly and the dogs can't be beat. I like the New York snappy dog - a skinny little tasty morsel hidden in the soft Wonder bun... all it needs is a little mustard... my friends love the Chihuahua Crif dog. I recommend grabbing one and heading over to the park to watch the real dogs in action or just kick back at one of the little tables inside. They have some cool retro video games - and a mystery behind the phone booth. Bottom line - a fun place with character and real good dogs.

My office placed an order for dogs, tots and fries, even a stoner special. We didn't receive any of our chili cheese fries after we paid for them and left. Couldn't go back to get them after that (work day an all) and they would not send a delivery person with 3 orders to cover those. We had to go down there the next day just to get a refund of our money already paid for the fries. All in all no effort made by them to refund us our money or get us our fries. In NYC, you take your chances, but never again with Crif Dogs.

I picked up my brother after a night of him drinking and he was at Crif Dog's and said he'd buy me a hot dog for picking me up. He said I HAD to try their hot dogs. Its a small place, definitely a late night spot after some beers, and I ordered the Chihuahua. And absolutely LOVED every bite. I think the Tsunami and the Spicy Reddneck are tasty as well. Give it a try! Definitely good cheap eats after some good times with pals.
Pros: Chihauhua Dog & Beer
Cons: Can get packed

I visited here years before I moved to New York. I recently made the plunge and moved to the city. I have been going here ounce a week since I moved here. Sometimes more, sometimes 3 or 4 times a week. The last time I was there, I was informed the refills on the drinks were 0.60 or sixty cents. I don't think this is a fair for a consistent customer and someone who never leaves without tipping. Nicky
Pros: Great Hot Dogs, good hangout for not so well to do student budget.
Cons: Charges on refills are unfair.

As an avid hot dog eater, I was both impressed and disappointed buy my visit to Crif Dogs. Fun ambiance aside, I was impressed by the variety and combination of toppings. I ordered a Chihuahua (bacon wrapped with avacodo and sour cream) which was tasty, despite what I considered to be a meager amount of either topping. I ordered a New Yorker (snap skin dog) with mustard and was disappointed in the shrunken and overcooked dog. Perhaps mine was an anomoly, but the shrivelled dog was lost in the "no-frills" brand bun. Both dogs and a medium Birch Beer was nearly 9 bucks. A bit too steep for a mediocre experience in my opinion. Your buck will go a lot further with a "Recession Special" 6 blocks away on 14th and 1st.
Pros: Unusual and wide variety of toppings
Cons: Under the garnish, not much to write home about. $$

Crif dogs is awesome! I particularly like the New Yorker style dog b/c of its snap. Awesome selection of condiments and toppings. 2 types of root beer on tap in addition to orange soda and other more common drinks. The cheese fries were some of the best I've had in a while! They maintained their crispness... even the ones smothered in cheese. Cool atmosphere and the A/C was cranking. Great place to go on a hot day or really any day!
Pros: Tasty food, A/C, Fries
Cons: none

this place makes a basic, nicely charred, nicely flavored veggie dog, and service is quick. on my "veggie special" i got chopped tomatoes, onions and jalapenos. i also ordered a side of fries, which came criss-cross style and perfectly crisp, without being too oily or grease-soaked. cheap, fresh and convenient, serving up an all-american menu.
Pros: tasty, fresh junk food
Cons: supermarket hot dog buns

I ordered several veggie specials with sides to bring back to several people in a different neighborhood, and I get handed one meat hot dog with a mess of tater tots. I realized the mix-up when I got home and I immediately called. (I was disappointed, but still friendly). The girl behind the counter blamed me, saying I "took the wrong order." This is funny, because she came up to me, said my name, and gave me the order. She refused to let me come back another time and give me the correct order, or even the difference in price (my order was quite a bit more than the order they gave me, plus I overtipped $5). She said this happens all the time. Hmm. I've worked in many restaurants and I know this is not good. Is it too much to ask for a little accountability and just decent customer service? Apparently so.

One of the few places where you can get a hot dog with coleslaw, pineapple, pickles. chili, ketchup, and tomatoes....and I would def say go for it. Great place...cool action figures on the walls, staff seems like they were here back in the coney island high days of st marks. I love all the choices. The buns are a little wimpy but whatever.
Pros: awsome toppings, good dogs
Cons: wimpy buns

I thought it was Grif Dog, with a G. Anyway, I'm a vegetarian so haven't been able to try these hot dogs, but driving by late one night, I stopped in to grab some cheese fries (delicious and messy, just the way I like em). Good prices. It seems to be a local hang out spot, real gritty nyc, so anyone expecting a nice classy place, look elsewhere. But for native new yorkers its a true gem.
Pros: cool local hang out, good fries
Cons: small, can get loud and crowded
