Way west, and worth the trip for the view.

by Contributor

In Short
Minimalist decor--delicate slate-strip walls, wall-to-wall leather banquettes and low lighting--provide a pleasant backdrop for drinks. The out-of-the-way location allows West to boast something that few spots do: a western exposure that affords spectacular views through a windowed facade of the sunset over Jersey. The bar stocks more than 20 varieties of brew, including Lindemann's Framboise, Stella Artois and Hoegaarden, as well as 10 rotating wines.

A Room With A View - and then some

by hurricanefug

Not only is WEST one of NYC's most impressive downtown lounges, but it also boasts fantastic music and, undoubtedly, the best waterfront view in town. Located right across the street from the newly renovated Huson River Park, West's sleek slate interior with plush leather banquetts and candle-lit ambience provides a unique kind of Zen-meets-downtown atmosphere. If sipping on one of the best Gimlets you've ever had while watching the sun set over Jersey isn't enough, the music will keep you coming back. The place is obviously run by audiophlies. Both bartenders, here, and DJs alike keep the eclectic groove rolling into the wee hours. Coupled with the beautiful locals and the ten beers on tap, it's a wonder this place remains a well-guarded secret.

  • Pros: Great music, Fantastic view, REAL cocktails

cool ambience

I love this bar! It's a hidden gem -- just far enough off the beaten path that you could claim it as your own, but it's too good not to share it. The room is beautifully appointed with an open and airy feel -- it looks out on the Hudson River through a row of huge windows (I love the low slung leather seating, and the view of the river is breathtaking). My favourite bartender makes very interesting cocktails (the best one I've had so far has elderflower water in it -- it's called Love and Idleness and sure beats a ho hum Cosmo!). The patrons vary, depending on the night, but I've been there for Tuesday night film screenings, a Sunday afternoon Bloody Mary, and some awesome parties (although I've heard you have to book early, as Saturdays fill up fast).

  • Pros: decor, regulars, cool drinks

Romantic and Crazy Nights on the Hudson

by ginasue

West is my newest old favorite nightspot. West is something that is really rare for a New York City bar: a place that looks cool, has fab drinks, is big enough to handle a birthday party or two (or 5 like on the night of my last party there -- totally fun!). But most importantly West is really, really laid back. Chic with no attitude, cool without all the hassle. I love that its close to clubs in the meatpacking district and some of my favorite West Village restaurants so it can be a great place to get a night out started. Its also got enough of a cozy vibe to make it a really romantic place to talk to someone, especially on weeknights. Certainly makes my top three list of places I take guys to try to seduce them (Ciel Rouge and Angelshare being the other two).

  • Pros: Great mixed drinks, Great wines & beers, *Fantastic* views
