Rediscover Sullivan Room

by svetiknyc

If you have been to Sullivan Room in the past and left with less than perfect experience it's time to try it again. The place has been revamped yet again, the sound is perfect, the bartenders are super nice and the crowd is cool, unpretencious and fun. Satoshi Tomiie party was insane and DJ Heather rocked the house with groovy soulful beats, everyone was dancing. Another great thing about Sullivan Room is the attitude of everyone who works there, yes you can get bottle service if you want to, but it's not all about that.

All the people who work there starting from the door guys to coat check to bartenders to bathroom attendants are extremely pleasant and this is what makes the place great. There are benches to sit down if you get too tired of dancing :) I don't know any other place that has that, usually if you want to sit down you will have to book a table. And last but not least: the bathrooms have been fixed and they are clean!

All in all the place has energy reminiscent of the past when after coming to a club a few times you felt a sense of belonging.

Not a whole lot of positives besides a great sound system...

by watchmesparkle

I went to Sullivan Room to see my favorite DK, Kaskade, last saturday night...Mr. Raddon was excellent (as usual) but Sullivan room is SKANKY!!! Three bathroom stalls were out of order in the women's bathroom, and the place just reeks of this gross "I want to be underground and dark and nasty" vibe...what is with that? Drinks are average, and the bartenders were trying hard, but this place is just kinda yucky in general....I wouldn't want to go back. Its so dark, and gross, and underdecorated...maybe that's just their vibe, but that's just not my taste. The bar tries to have a degree of fabulosity by having these mini chandeliers (sp?) over the bar, but it really doesn't help much. Honestly, I hope Kaskade doesn't play here again in the near future, there are so many other better clubs with more space!! Not recommended, sorry :-(

Nasty

by detroitec

I went here with my wife, both of us who happen to be huge electronic music goers. I live in Detroit and am from Long Island, working in the city for a few months. This place compared to Pacha, Cielo and Rebel is absolutely nasty. I love the underground yet clean and posh atmosphere. It is like going into a modern day underground bar. It gives the best of both worlds, one moment I felt like I was in Detroit in a dark nasty underground venue, next minute I felt like I was in a more chic atmosphere. I tend to be a tad picky about the electronic music I can tolerate, and this took the taco as far as NY is concerned. The crowd was good, mature. Good looking people, friendly, all having a good time. My bar tab is not too clear in my mind, but I know it was a lot, but it's NY, what do you expect?

2 Damn Cheeky were the Dj's that opened for Luke Fair and they were great. Filthy filthy beats I tell you, absolutely blew out Luke Fair. I actually don't remember Luke Fair at all because I was so impressed with 2 Damn Cheeky.

All in all, if you can't stand the heat stay out of kitchen, i.e. the Sulivan Room. This place is cool for the young and young at heart that want to enjoy some great house/electro/prog house...

  • Pros: Great beats, cool vibe, great location
  • Cons: Small space, bad hangover

Newly rennovated and better then ever! Best soundsystem in NYC!

by andrew_nyc

Being a former regular at SR previous to the renovation I must say the improvements have far exceeded anything I thought the room was capable of. It is now twice the size and has ample seating and places to get lost in while enjoying the night. Some of the former issues such as the bathrooms were addressed which now are much more suitable for the size of the crowd. The sound upgrade is simply amazing! It is nice to see the small sized room with a OK sound system graduate to being a true nightclub.

  • Pros: Excellent DJs and Soundsystem. Excellent crowd, moderate dink $ for NYC
  • Cons: crowd varies mainly on the promotors and DJs playing.

get a dose here

by siouxsiedolly

My favorite smaller venue/club! I started going to Sullivan Room when it firsed opened a few years ago to attend their weekly parties on Mondays and Thursdays. It was a tight atmosphere, cool people, down to earth and chill vibe. The dj's they used to get and still get to play are the best you can find anywhere in the city.. without having to pay an enormous entrance fee and without the ridiculous pretensiousness you might find elsewhere. The decor is amazing, especially since they revamped it. There's something special about this place, although the crowd has changed a lot and it's more mainstream than it once was. Sullivan Rooms parties and dj's attract a more musically mature and underground type of party person. I always feel comfortable here, it's very intimate.. you can talk to the dj, you don't have to buy drinks, you can hang out outside and smoke cigs as much as you want and talk easily to strangers or totally lose yourself in the middle of the small but energy packed dancefloor. I've had many an AMAZING and flawless night, dancing my heart away to the soul pouring out of the dj's mixing and shared energy of club goers. Sullivan Room keeps it real.. really NEW YORK.. and this coming from a native new yorker. If you want a real dose of house or techno, check this place out. Just respect and don't act like an idiot.. you might just "GET" it....

  • Pros: great music, awesome decor, amazing chill and fun party people
  • Cons: none

Slap in the Face

by davemoney

I went here for my brothers last birthday. Altogether we had about 12 people. We were there for about 4 hours and spent well over $1200 collectively. Towards the end of the night all of us that had too much to drink a few of us were asking the bar tenders for water. They took their time to give us the water helping everyone else first and then when finally getting the wayter actually ASKED to tip for the water.. They were very rude about it. After spending soo much money I'd expect more courtesy.

I'd never go there again.

GREAT BAR!

by bbfoster

NYC needs more places like the Sullivan Room! The music is always excellent, and the crowd is very friendly. The DJs are top-notch, and they consistently play some of the best house music in the city! I have no idea why the editorial review is only 'average'. Sullivan Room is quality all around!

  • Pros: music, people, atmosphere

Given it was one of my friends' cd promo party. the bouncers set velvent rope 6' feet around the dj promo. Nevertheless, that's understand, but pushing dancers by the forehead to get them out is certainly not acceptable as a business practice. As much as their well-taken intention to protect the dj, I certainly don't think that's positive to any enjoyable environment.

  • Pros: discreet, ambience
  • Cons: attitude, barbarbic behaviour

Better than you'd think

by kensol

A weird place in a weird part of town, the Sullivan Room is a little tough to find. Once you find it, and after a long walk downstairs, you find a seriously decent space with very solid sound. The DJ booth is close to as good as it gets, and the results on the main system are evident. DJs here have all the tools neccessary to pump out their best work, and the clubs patrons are rewarded with some solid sounds. Theres lots of decent seating, but the bar is overcrowded and very pricey, even for big city standards. $8 for a cheap domestic bottle of beer is highway robbery no matter where you are. But the sound and music almost make up for it.

  • Pros: Great sound, Fun space
  • Cons: Difficult to find, overcrowded, pricey bar
