Service with (Poor) Attitude
by edex at Citysearch
Horrific attitude of the wait staff converts into the start of a horrible night. If you get past all of that, you're a masochist. We walked out before our water glasses were filled. Osteria Del Sole should not be taken seriously as an Italian restaurant.
- Pros: location
- Cons: thumbs down, bad attitude of the wait staff, overpriced pasta
The only decent item .........
by solangebeneth at Citysearch
In a neighborhood with a gazillion delicious, authentic Italian restaurants, there is no reason to go to this one. The only decent item on the menu is the green salad, but save your money and get it at the next door restaurant. The pata were too salty, the cheese plate was uninventive and forgettable, the wine list was paltry and overpriced, and the service was not helpful. Go to Otto, Po, or Lupa for similar prices and far better food.
bad service

Saw that they had nice paneni with their Sunday brunch, so my friend and I decided to try out the place. I ordered a toast with ham and cheese, the food was not fresh, the service was not professional. We could not get our waiter for our drinks (so much for the mimosas; we were lucky we even had one); he did not come by to see how we were doing; we wanted to change the toast, but since he was no where to be found, we had to borrow it from the patrons at the next table. I wanted another drink, but after waiting for so long, I was frustrated, and annoyed. I just wanted the check so we could leave. But he still took forever to get us our check, so we just sat there, waiting and waiting. Service was so poor, I didn't even feel bad for leaving him a small tip. never going back unless they improve the service...and as we left, we saw that the restaurant next door more attractive and the food look good....
Don't plagerize me!

I don't love this restaurant, but it's solid, the service is gracious (no attitude) and I can usually get a table. It's a good neighborhood joint - they know their neighbors and appreciate them. And I appreciate not feeling like an outsider in my own neighborhood!
So, imagine my surprise when I was browsing CitySearch today and I found this review, supposedly posted by "bastianovich." Everyone's entitled to an opinion - the only problem is that this opinion was mine...DIRECTLY CUT AND PASTED FROM A POOR REVIEW THAT I GAVE TO ANOTHER RESTAURANT!!! I was unsure, so I went back and checked my review of Massimo Ponte Vecchio, dated June 14, 2007. It is word for word the same! If you're going to plant fake reviews, at least make up your own words and don't plagerize me!
If anyone else wants to see the original review, go to citysearch and look up: (sorry, it won't let me put a link...)

tourist trap
by bastianovich at Citysearch
I honestly don't know who goes here. I have passed the place many times and never wanted to eat here. But the other night, we were a large hungry group, it was raining, etc... This is some of the worst food I have had in NYC (and so much good food so nearby). My arugula "salad" was a plate of limp arugula with a sprinkling of goat cheese and my friends fennel "salad" was a plate of shaved fennel. Both were undressed. The zucchini blossoms were dipped in a heavy doughy tempura-like batter and filled with mozzarella. They were tasteless. Around the table, the best I could solicit from anyone was that their food was "okay." (I think they were just being nice, as we were with someone who knew the owner.) This seems like the kind of place that gives NYC restaurants (especially in the West Village) a bad name (you know the name - "tourist trap"). It seems that they rely so much on tourist traffic that they honestly don't care if anyone comes back. I'm offended by this kind of restaurant. At least the service was nice. But I'll never go back...
Not worth the price. Small portions and powdery shrimp.

My Wife and I went to Osteria Del Sole last week and it was dreadful. And based on the fact that the table next to us sent their food back, and the other table just knocked their food around with their forks and dissected it trying to find an appetizing part, we were not alone. I must say the decor was great, as was this Italian style dipping salsa for the bread. The Caesar salad was caked with what tasted like Hellman's best mayonnaise. The risotto was hard in the middle, and the shrimp was, as my wife noted, powdery. The spaghetti with clams was fine. The desert was the worst, we ordered chocolate cappuccino cake. These two hard doughy little cakes that were as moist as sand topped with sickly sweet honey or something. Uuugh.
- Pros: Nice view of a great city street
- Cons: Powdery shrimp
Gnocci!!!!
by datona13 at Citysearch
I am only a few blocks away from here + go about once a month. The food is outstanding!!! and the portions are large with great value. My Italian family refuses to dine at any other Italian restaurant in town -- highly recomend the gnocci (but with the tomato sauce), the wild boar ragu, the garlic greens, and pumpkin gelato!!! yum!! the staff is straight from Italy and so kind and attentive!!
also - i had my law school graduation dinner there with 20 people and the owner personally waited on us at a special table set up in the bar area!!! brilliant.
- Pros: outstanding food and staff
- Cons: decor is lacking
WE DON'T NEED THIS KIND OF PEOPLE IN OUR NEIGHBOURHOOD..

good food, good service and good ambiance..
I live in west village for such a long time and i'm going to osteria del sole since there open, we love this place in fact we going there al least 1 time a week, the food is delicious and service is good, good people too, they don't deserve this kind of review because I was there on saturday night next to this party of 5 people there was sitting next to me and my boyfriend and i had to tall you this people was very rude to the staf, i don't konw where they coming from but believe me that is not the way to act, one of the women screaming in the middle of the dining room let me tall you she was out of control probably they had to much drink but she and the guy next to her act so crazy with everybody and says bad thinks to the staf, and thats why they ask then to leave, the waitrees toll us that they got angry because the food didn't arrive soon and this women push her so when they finally got the food they complaint again, i think they do all this think just because they don't wanted paid and have everything free, we saw everything and its not fear we love that place and the staf was very kind with then, but when they gave the check to the table they started to be rude and nasty...

Bad food; bad service. Riding on location and ambiance.
by dawntan at Citysearch
The "suckling pig" dish ordered by 2 people in our party of 5, was uniformly DRIED OUT. It wouldn't have passed for pork loin either. My pasta with duck was mediocre. The pasta was al dente but not necessarily fresh and the sauce appeared to have been either microwaved or re-heated. We know good food and understand that this restaurant may be well received because of its location, convenience and overall ambience but do not think the food deserves any accolades. What is more important to note about the restaurant and its service is this - when we noted our complaints to the owner/manager, instead of apologizing or taking well-intentioned criticism, or offering to substitute a new dish, or being at all humble about his customers' opinions, this owner/manager was rude, uncompromising, summarily dismissed the complaints, acted like WE didn't know what we were talking about and then asked that we leave. His desire or inability to not discuss the quality of his food was so strong that he chose instead to ask us to leave (without paying).
I wouldn't recommend this restaurant unless you are having such a good time with your friends you do not care what you're eating. The idea is, if you don't complain, you'll have smiles from the owner, if you do complain, he'll still smile, but he doesn't hear your complaints and doesn't care to.
I agree with a previous reviewer, there are so many other better restaurants in that neighborhood, within a 2 block radius. Give this one a miss!
- Pros: Location, Ambience
- Cons: Poor food, Poor interpretation of Italian food, poor service
