Amazing food, disappointing service

by NYCFan at Citysearch

As a regular visitor to New York from Scotland, we always make time for a visit to Gobo as the food is brilliant. Was disappointed during our recent visit at the end of August as the waitress was not even monosyllabic, she did not actually speak at all other than to take our order.

Whilst the food was great as usual (we thanked the chefs), her attitude and lack of manners did spoil our visit. More customer training is needed as there is plenty of competition out there for fantastic food experiences.

  • Pros: Delicious choices for all courses
  • Cons: Staff attitude

Best Vegetarian Restaurant!‎

by veggiecutie at Citysearch

As a vegetarian chef, I feel I can give a fair opinion on the fare at Gobo. Hands down the best meal I've ever had. Period. A little pricey, but well worth the splurge. Enjoy!

  • Pros: Delicious food, great decor, fun service
  • Cons: Packed! Long lines...

Very good vegetarian food, but beware of hidden charges.

by tikonan at Citysearch

Last night I had a delicious dinner at Gobo in the Village. The food was tasty and creative. We tried Vietnamese spring rolls, pan seared spinach dumplings, scallion pancakes, slow-cooked Malaysian curry, and eggplant stuffed with herbed tofu cheese. Although these choices are somewhat typical, all dishes were prepared very well. The pleasant ambience of the restaurant contributed to an enjoyable meal, except for a very loud couple who was sitting next to us. Because the tables were placed just a few inches apart, it was hard to hear my companion over the high volume conversation going on at the neighboring table. ? And then came a bill with two surprises. Apparently, the restaurant charges $3 for a side order of rice. We weren?t asked if we want rice with our dishes or not, it was just placed on the table. Also, the multi-layered chocolate cake was served with a scoop of ice cream, which we figured was a nice touch. However, that nice touch came at a price of an extra $1. Surprise! I recommend this restaurant for the quality of food and friendly staff, but beware of extra charges.

  • Pros: very good vegetaria food, friendly staff, pleasant ambience
  • Cons: hidden charges

Very interesting, first try at vegitarean

by KaraJKG at Citysearch

A friend recommended this place to me. When I first went in, I was very impressed with the atmosphere, though that usually comes with a price, but to my surprise, they were kept fair. I got a saytan dish, it was good, but not something I would really try again, but don't get me wrong, it was of very high quality. Would recommend to anyone of the vegitarean persuasion.

Best Vegetarian Restaurant!

by cc938 at Citysearch

I dined here with some friends for a birthday dinner and I have to say it was amazing! Every dish was so delicious. I really liked their shitake mushroom w yam dish and their avocado dish (don't remember the name sorry). They did forget to bring out one of the dishes but it was ok because we were already full so we just canceled it. It was reasonably priced and a great experience for us. I would definitely go back!

  • Pros: Great food and price, ambience
  • Cons: They forgot our dish but it was ok. It was a busy night.

amazing restaurant

What an incredible experience! My boyfriend and I were walking around looking for a place to eat and we stumbled upon gobo! What a great find, before we were done eating we couldn't wait for the next time we'd come back! Excellent food and service. We both left their full and we want to come back to try everything on the menu! I recommend making reservations though if you can, otherwise there's a wait. Atmosphere was very peaceful and the menu was really helpful with a few definitions for those people unfamiliar with the different kinds of veg foods.

  • Pros: excellent food
  • Cons: make resevations to avoid waiting

Best vegan in town

by leecam at Citysearch

Though the prices can be a bit high and seats need to be cleaned/replaced, the food here is excellent. The flavor diversity always leaves room for discovery even after repeat visits. My boyfriend is vegetarian, I love steak...and yet we both love this restaurant. I don't miss meat at all. They have great smoothies and tonics as well. Good organic beer too!

  • Pros: Food and smoothies
  • Cons: Price, dingy decor, & occasional poor service

Simply Delicious Veggie Fare!!

by etherrea at Citysearch

Treated my sister to this fantastic restaurant in celebration of a job well done for the school semester. Came by recommendation of a vegan friend who, if rumors are true, informed me that this place was owned by the kin of the folks that own Zen Palate. How could you go wrong?

Went there with quite an appetite; started off with the five spice tofu rolls, edamame & steamed spinach dumplings. Scrumptious! Had the pine nut vegetable medley with lettuce wraps for dinner and my sister had sesame protein braised in sweet & sour sauce (as a former poultry eater, I must say this puts chicken in sweet and sour sauce to shame!). Everything was delicious. Atmosphere was pleasantly sedated, all done in wood and beige decor. Service was mild and pleasant. Prices are very reasonable, especially for a slightly trendy cuisine location. Highly noteworthy is that as this place starts jumping (started packing in around 7-sh on a week night) so you can smell the flame broiler grilling away for all the new orders. Will easily satisfy the scent-sations of a meat eater.

Drink the herbal tonics, refreshing and tasty, a great carbonated reprieve from typical sugary soda drinks.

I'll definitely be going back to sample more of their ample tasty fare.

  • Pros: Food, Accessibility, Choices
  • Cons: None really

my favorite resturant in NYC

by trusttreview at Citysearch

We had just left the Met, and were hungry, and stumbled upon Gobo Upper East Side. We were blown away at how great everything was. Every detail was perfect. Really. I have been back to Gobo many times since then, and everyone i take with me is always floored by the food and service. It is vegetarian, but the most die hard carnivore will love it too.

Avoid This Dump

by artskell at Citysearch

The food is OK, but just OK. The place has a nice look to it and the restrooms are clean. What is amazing is how utterly rude and obnoxious the waitstaff can be. Try to order!! Try to pay!!! You can?t. When you politely ask ?can I give you my order now? you get nothing but attitude. So now we go to Red Bamboo across the street for vegetarian.

  • Pros: Good menu choices
  • Cons: Service from hell, amazingly unprofessional
