Don't waste your time or money

by PaRider

This place is a waste of money. They are opportunists who prey on theatre-goers who happen to pass by. I don't know who ever would go back a second time.

The place has an eye-catching exterior, but once inside, you will immediately notice the poor service and the gotcha pricing strategies. There are minimum charges per person and per-person sharing fees. Even if you meet the minimum per person, they will sock it to you with sharing fees.

Then there's the issue of the prices. $20 for a 9-inch sausage pizza! Yes; 9-inch pizza. That's a personal pizza... for $20. Everything is overpriced and undervalued.

When we expressed our shock to the waiter about the size of the pizza, he ignored us. When we expressed our disappointment to the manager, he didn't care, though it was clear he would never see us again, so it was easy for him to not care.

I am so glad we paid in cash, because I wouldn't trust this establishment with my credit card information.

Too bad there are enough people just happening by to keep this place in business, because on its merits as a restaurant, this is the type of place that deserves no place in a great food town like New York.

Reasonably priced for massive portions

by myfiction

I went to this place twice while I was in New York City; once on a Saturday night and once on a Wednesday night. I didn't have to wait either of the times I went. The service was good, especially for a busy place in Times Square, and the food was wonderful. The first night I ordered a chicken parmesan sandwich that came served oven faced because it was too big to close. It was quite possibly the best chicken parmesan sandwich I've ever had. The second night we swung by for desert; I had the cheesecake with strawberries and almost managed to eat the whole thing. Service the second night was not as attentive as the first but it was nothing worth fussing over. Maxie's only supports and adds to my theory that it's almost impossible to find a bad meal in New York unless you're going out of your way to find something to complain about. I love it, and plan to go back many times.

  • Pros: Great food, huge portions
  • Cons: $$$- but equal to the portion sizes.

More than satisfied

by Jaymen

I don't know why or how the other reviews, as a whole, were so negative. Other than the prices (it IS NYC and Times Square), I found the food to be quite good, portions large, and service excellent. Wait time was about as average as anywhere else, city or wherever you're from, and the atmosphere, with the doors open on a sunny day, is all New York can offer. Just great.

Sitting at the counter, I had the pleasure of being served by two gorgeous Russian women who knew the menu well and could answer any questions with a smile. Refilled my beverage before I asked, boxed up my leftovers, and were able to handle requests from multiple customers. I tipped them both well because they earned it. Will definetely retur to Maxie's.

  • Pros: Service, atmosphere, location, people-watching
  • Cons: Prices a bit high

Avoid like the plague

by welsh91

My girlfriend and I stopped in for an afternoon cocktail and an appetizer. The prices looked high, but hey, it?s Times Square. After they ?Bussed? the table for us, we both sat down and noticed that our hands were sticky, like we had touched tree sap and noticed that there were used napkins stashed being the salt and pepper.. After 5 minutes, they brought us napkins and wiped the table down with a dirty rag. Hey, it?s New York! Two drinks and one order of Potato Skins came to $31.81. The drinks were short pours and the lemonade that is ?Fresh squeezed? is actually the junk on the gun. Not hot water in the bathroom and the urinal actual had, well? a ?Mr. Hankee? in it.

Please don?t go here.

  • Pros: Location
  • Cons: That it hasn't been burned to the ground.

just get the cheesecake there.

by sheezcrazy

The cheesecake here is superb. I mean suberb. Yeah, it's eight bucks, but it's two (or three) servings. It will spoil you for cheesecake from anywhere else, ever again. If you want to save a few bucks, and some hassle, just get the cheesecake to go. I wouldn't bring kids here to eat, too pricey. Go to Hard Rock for cheaper food, clean bathrooms, and the absofantastic rock memorabilia.

  • Pros: High recommendation for cheesecake only
  • Cons: pricey

Over priced bad food

by mysteryrose

Stay away from this over priced trap. Worst onion soup and knishes ever - greasy and uneatable. Hamburger fair - but way overpriced. Unfriendly atmosphere and service. Sloppy kitchen, not the cleanest rest rooms. Save your money and time. Great for a diet, food is fit for the garbage.

  • Cons: Food not fit to eat

Pretty good for 3 am!

by romy107

I've been there once and mainly because it was open until 3am - not many food places are open late. The food was ok and the service wasn't bad either. The food preparation took a while since we've ordered a steak and half a chicken.

  • Pros: Open until 3am, decent food
  • Cons: Not cheap

Don't waste your money for a below-average place that just happens to have a good location

by nee_houston

We were walking around Times Square when we discovered this place, which looked very appealing from the outside but we were really disappointed later on. The food is very very expensive even by Times Square standards and the quality is not better than many other places in the area. In fact, for a $15 cheese burger, I would rather go to Planet Hollywood or Hard Rock Cafe which are both close by. There is a minimum $12 consumption, which we think is ridiculous. The way we see it is: let us stop by and eat just a cheese cake today (hence spend much less than $12) but if we like the place we come back later on and probably spend much more and even recommend it to friends.

Also, please keep in mind that they also charge about $4 for sharing a plate and service is average.

In all, the place looks nice from outside and has a good view of Times Square area but it is VERY expensive for what is worth. In fact, for what they charge for everything they could at least keep the restrooms clean, which were disgusting. Please don't waste your money for a below average place that just happens to have a good location.

  • Pros: Good location
  • Cons: Outrageous prices, disgusting restrooms, and stupid minimum consumption policies

Horrible Experience

by bomeekim

The worst experience that I have ever had in New York. I thought, sure, I'll try it even the it's $17 for a hot dog. It must be good, right? The menu states that you have have your hot dog broiled or boiled. We asked for ours broiled. Then we were told that they only cook them fried. Then we told her the sides we wanted. The sides were misprinted as well. So, I guess the menu is wrong and needs a really good update on what's actually available. I should have known then that it was a bad sign indicating a poorly run restaurant. Well, after taking 15 minutes just to order and get a drink, we got our food and waited another 15 minutes for the condiments to be brought out. By that time, we were done. There were only two of us, so it didn't take long for us to finish eating. We had stacked all of our dishes and our drinks were completely empty, as the server walked to all of the other tables around us taking their orders. She never once stopped by our table after she dropped off our food, besides the condiments drop. The table behind us got so annoyed that they cursed the server out and left. After sitting for another 20 minutes for her to stop by and give us our check (with our empty plates, still stacked and pushed to the side) we dropped $40 and left. We walked down the street and stopped at some of the stands, it must have been 20 minutes and the server comes running down the sidewalk, telling us we shorted her $13. Because she never got a chance to give us the ticket. She blamed it on us, because we didn't ask for it! I gave her the $13 and she wanted more money because she said it didn't include her service charge! I refused to give a tip for such lowsy service. The audacity of these people!!! I wouldn't go back if you paid me!

BEWARE!!

by jobot

Let's just say I am an inside source. The management are mostly pig-headed and horrendous. The food is unsanitary and overpriced by far. Just know that literally, the ravioli you are paying top bistro prices for come out of a giant chef boyardee can and then are topped with cheese that has been unrefrigerated all day long. And those delicious deli pickles? They get fished out of a giant tub, by unwashed hands, all day long, and then continue to pickle in a cesspool of germs. I would be lying if I told you I didn't see my share of insects and rodents, and I'm sure that immigration would love to know about most of the people who work there. I had a friend once who posed on the phone as someone from the government as a joke, and surprisingly, when asked to mention all of the managers who worked there, there was no recollection of a good few of them. Hmmmmm... Don't give your money to these greedy people who get off on their power trips, abusing employees, cheating the system and overcharging you.

  • Pros: ???
  • Cons: everything, rodents, unsanitary, OVERPRICED
