What users are saying:
you for the food, not the decor

I went with my boyfriend last night, and we both loved our meals. We tend to be picky about our Mexican food since we grew up in southern California and Texas, but we had the most delicious cheap meal: a strawberry "milkshake" (not like a diner milkshake, more like strawberry blended with cream, sugar, and some ice- mmm mmm good!), spicy pork soft tacos for me, and al pastor burrito for him. The only thing that disappointed was the guacamole- low on flavor. It was good on the taco, but not good enough to just be eaten with chips. If you get the guacamole and chips, definitely add some salt to help it along. The people we went with had a shrimp dish they really enjoyed. But if you're looking for a romantic setting, the decor is bare bones.
- Pros: great food, inexpensive, cozy (small)
- Cons: they close at 10pm
In the far reaches of west Hell's Kitchen, authentic Mexican worth scouting out.

In Short
The dining options this far west in Hell's Kitchen are so slim, it would be churlish to complain about the bare-bones look of this tiny taqueria. Fluorescent lighting, a flat-screen TV and a few paintings don't exactly set a cozy mood, but the reason this place has become a cult favorite are the heaping plates of authentic Mexican fare. It would be easy to fill up on starters like gorditas, huaraches and flautas, but that would mean misssing out on tongue tacos, carne asada and mole enchiladas.

Have been a visitor to many states in Mexico....This place is comprable and even better than some places I have been to in Puebla....
- Pros: excellent pleasant service together with delicious food...one cannot go wrong
It's all about the food - just as it should be

Perfect soft tacos - at least 12 to choose from - I usually get the carnitas (fried pork) and carne asada (grilled steak) but the other ones are flavorful, too. They come with lots of guac, limes and radishes. Wash it down with a tamarind Jarritos. The bodega next door operates the take out contingent and is stocked with Mexican snacks. The burritos are also good (not heavy on the beans, a plus in my book) and huge. The mole is good. The fajitas are authentic, so don't be expecting a sizzling plate and a mariatchi band. Flan wraps up any meal nicely. Good neighborhood find
There is no comparison

I have lived around the corner from Tulcingo for going on four years now, and I get takeout from them at least twice a week. Every single time I have taken the first bite of whatever I've ordered, be it a standard chicken taco, a homemade tamale or my all-time favorite dish, carnitas with cactus in salsa verde, I've exclaimed aloud "that is SO good." I challenge anyone to get through a meal from this place without saying that.
I don't bother eating what passes for Mexican food elsewhere; I just go back to this place. The unique flavors, exotic, indigenous spices and family ownership and operation make for the most consistently satisfying food of any ethnic cuisine in the city. The Mexican at Tulcingo is better than the Chinese in Chinatown, the Italian in Little Italy, the French in Li'l France.
Taking the time to write this is not something I would do if I didn't believe with the core of my being that the quality of your life will show immediate and dramatic improvement within seconds of your entree arriving. When your number is up and your life flashes before your eyes, this place will be in the highlight reel. You will pass from this world into the next with a smile on your face.
Best Mexican in NYC

A best kept secret. This is the best Mexican food I've had anywhere, and the price is right. Pasole, tamales, and burritos couldn't be better. The sauces are second to none. Eat in or order out--they are fast with delivery.
- Pros: Great cheap Mexican food.
- Cons: Not a lot of atmosphere, and you may need to speak Spanish in order to order.
Can't miss meals

We eat here at least 3x a week! From tacos on the go to classic Mexican entrees - the house specials never fail to delight. The food is always fresh and full of flavor - I highly recommend the tacos and burritos, chicken pipian and mixed fajitas, chicken mole and tamales. It's impossible to go home hungry, the service is prompt and pleasant, and your money goes a long way - it's no surprise this restaurant is one of NY magazine's "cheap eats" highlights.
Horrible

It has overpriced mediocre food and rude service. I love Mexican food and live close by so I went here a few times before i discovered a much better and less expensive Mexican dive up the avenue at 695 10th btwn 47-48th called Tehuitzingo. That has much better food (fresh ingredients, flavorful spices), is cheaper and the people are nicer. Its a total cool find in the back of a bodega
- Cons: rude, overpriced, slow service
Yummy - Best Authentic Mexican In New York City
by iluv2eat at Citysearch
I am surprised that no one has reviewed Tulcingo Del Valle. It is really the best mexican here in new york. I spent a lot of time in Mexico on business and had a hard time eating Mexican food here in NYC because its all terrible. Until I was introduced to this place. Its Most authentic. Best tasting. Cheap. Very quick delivery. I found out about the place from a friend from Mexico City who loves this place - says when he's homesick he goes here for the pozole. Try the Cecina (salty beef) its a little like the sun dried beef in Monterrey, delicious. Great tortillas, pozole, tacos, etc.
- Pros: Great food, quick delivery, huge portions
