terrible food, great wait staff

by sweetpea021 at Citysearch

The first time I was at MetroCafe was about 2 years ago and the food was great! I have been back twice this year and I will never go back. The first time I figured it was just and off night but I was there last night and again...TERRIBLE FOOD! I had the chicken entree and it was disgusting. I ended up taking it home and giving it to my dogs. My friend had the Kobe Burger and it tasted funny. He took two bites and couldn't finish it. We also had the chicken dumplings and the guacomole - both were barely edible. The only thing going for this place now is the wait staff. They are all very friendly and knowledgable.

  • Pros: Food
  • Cons: Wait Staff

Great place for comfortable dinner with diverse selections

by lee337w at Citysearch

Great menu and reasonable prices. The drink flight place-mats on the table really distract from the atmosphere and almost seem like they belong at a diner. The staff is friendly and courteous. Food was well prepared and tasty.

  • Pros: Nice wine selection and diverse food selection
  • Cons: Atmosphere is "almost upscale" could use some improvements

great ambience, great to have dinner with friends

by gigi1 at Citysearch

I invited 11 friends. The service and food was excellent. The ambience was nice.I was able to have a nice conversation with friends not needing to shout above noise or music. It was a week night so we were able to linger as long as we wanted. Service was quick. We split a few bottles of wine among us. The wine was good. We were upstairs the tables were small so it was great fora large group of people. I met the owner through my friendand he let us have the 10 percent discount even if it was a party larger than 6. Great. I would recommend it and would come back here again.

  • Pros: great ambience, wine was great, nice owners
  • Cons: none!

Good food, ok wine

by anonymous1112 at Citysearch

was looking for a restaurant for dinner/wine/cheese and came across MetroCafe on citysearch. though i have yet to find a wine bar in the city that offers true wine and cheese pairings, MetroCafe was a good choice for their cheese and fruit platter and reasonably priced entrees. i ordered a flight of the cabernet, which was slightly overpriced for four 2oz glasses and a mediocre selection...no specific wine stood out. the cheese and fruit platter was very good, with crispy crostinis and very sweet fruit, especially the grapes. for the entree, i had the chicken with lemon butter sauce, which was juicy and flavorful. overall, i recommend MetroCafe for the comfortable atmosphere and good food, but wouldn't highly recommend it for the wine flights.

  • Pros: Good food, reasonable prices
  • Cons: Mediocre selection of wine

Nice Date Locale

by WelcomeToTheGoodLife at Citysearch

I've been to this joint twice in the past week and a half. It's a good place for amateur wine drinkers (yes, that's me) since their flights are pretty good and the wait staff are friendly and educational. Both times, our waitress recommended something for us according to what we like and I have yet to be disappointed. The place itself is nicely decorated. It was packed when I went for after-work drinks on a Thursday but was really quiet on Saturday night. The staff won't rush you if you sit for a long time; I was there for about two and a half hours. Prices are fairly decent and the food is phenomenal! You must try the guacomole and sesame chicken bites. Overall, this is a good after-work drink spot as well as a great romantic spot for a date.

  • Pros: Ambience, service, delicious appetizers
  • Cons: Can't think of any

Awesome spot

Great wine, good food and superb service. The prices are reasonable, too. We used Metro's private room twice this month and were treated really well. Highly recommended!

Great wine list, excellent apps

by pamelacshaw at Citysearch

My first time there, ordered a flight of reds, all were delicious! The service waxed and waned over the evening, overall really good. The place was quiet for 9.00 on a Thursday, but around 11.30 the place was raided by a million guys in business suits who were super noisy. Had it not been for the noise-level later on in the evening, this place would have been fabulous!

Lovely little cafe. Excellent Selection of Wine.

Perfect for meeting friends after work if you aren't looking for the rowdy Happy Hour scene.

Easy-going Unpretentious Atmosphere - Good Food, Good Wine Selection

by holden0123 at Citysearch

This isn't a 5-star restaurant - but no one's claiming it is- so don't be thrown off by the reviews given by the snotty wine connoisseurs below. This is a great place to go after work for a bite & drinks, or for a laid-back dinner on the weekends. Yeah, it's considered a wine bar because of their variety - but if you know anything about restaurants, you can tell by looking in the window exactly what to expect. It's casual dining at its finest. They have a great selection of food & wines, the servers are pleasant, and everything came out looking and tasting great. I had the burger, done to perfection. My friends had salmon and pasta primavera, and we all split the delicious apple pie for dessert. Everything was really good -- plus, we didn't have to worry about looking a litte tired and unkempt after work. This place is totally unpretentious and friendly and we didn't have to wait for a table. It's a great alternative to Union Square's standard go-to's if you're in the neighborhood & looking for some good food and decent prices. I highly recommend this place for what it is - an independent "Cheesecake Factory"-like restaurant.

  • Pros: Great Prices
  • Cons: Don't expect what you're not paying for

Great food (esp. salads) at great prices!

by drouina at Citysearch

MetroCafe has great salads at great prices...and they don't balk when you ask for substitutions/additions to the salads. The other food looks good too, though I haven't ordered it. They also have a wonderful selection of wine, and they're in a very central location (perfect meeting spot for Chelsea-Gramercy friends). Ambiance is nice, too.
