Worst service possible

by maplewooddrive

We, a group of five, ordered take out on a Friday evening just before 9pm. Despite repeated calls, the delivery did not arrive until 10:45. We opened the food to discover that we had been given the wrong order - one greek salad, a few pieces of pita, and some dipping sauces. When we called to report the erroneous order, Gary the manager said he found it "very hard to believe" that we had received the wrong order. He was not apologetic in the least, and went on to say that if we would pack up the food again, he would send his delivery guy over to pick it up from us to deliver it to the rightful recipient who had ordered it. He offered to do the same for us before we told him that was highly unsanitary to take food that would have been out for the better part of an hour with a stranger and deliver it when they had made the mistake in the first place. I will never eat here again having had some insight as to their reprehensibly low standards on both customer service and basic sanitation.

  • Pros: Nothing
  • Cons: Customer Service, Sanitation problems

Charming, Good food, Stick with the small plates if you don't want to spend the big $

by BoissonClaire

The waiters were very attentive, charming and sweet. I went in there for an early dinner wearing a t-shirt and shorts and I didn't receive any of that snobbishness that other reviewers complained about. The mushroom youvetsi was delicious and only $11 - plenty of food unless you feel the need to be overstuffed. Try one of these 'small dishes' if you're looking to save some money. The Greek coffee was delicious - I had never had it before, it is the richness of good cocoa. yum.. Oh! and the Greek yogurt on a semolina cake with blueberry compote was lovely for desert. I would definitely go back.

  • Pros: Nice waitstaff, tasty food, cute and candlelit ambience in the evening.
  • Cons: Prices for the larger dishes are low to mid $20's - not terrible, but not cheap either.

delicious, healthy, not-too-pricey dining!

by andraeats

I've been to Snack Taverna countless times for lunch and a couple times for dinner and have consistently had wonderful food, including well-spiced, well-cooked lamb dishes and sandwiches. Am most impressed by how fresh everything seems; good ingredients make a huge difference for me. I especially recommend the beet and watercress salad. Lunch is probably more reasonable than dinner, but I think the portions are ample and I've never left hungry (but maybe that's because I'm addicted to their amazing rice pudding). I make a point of bringing out of town friends here for a guaranteed delicious, healthy, and not-too-pricey meal.

And I've always found the service to be fine; sometimes very friendly, often neutral, but no bad attitudes have ever ruined a meal.

  • Pros: Fresh ingredients, delicious food, great rice pudding.
  • Cons: Can get crowded. More value for lunch than dinner.

Okay food, snide service

by nanosecond

Okay food, but snide, nasty service. We were two and shoved off into a tight corner in back with a clear view of the kitchen and people going back and forth to the bathroom, while four larger tables up front were empty. Later on, two other sets of two entered the restaurant, young hetero couples, and they got the larger tables. The other two larger, more centrally located tables were left empty, I suppose in case some other special couples came along. So go if you fit their preferred user profile, but avoid it like the plague if you don't. The prices are high for what you get, so why pay good restaurant prices to get dissed? The other reviewers who complain about Snack Taverna's 'tude are so right.

  • Pros: okay greek food
  • Cons: rude waiters with an excess of attitude

Avoid - overpriced/bad service/food below expectation

by mortonst

So, we went to Snack Taverna to try again (for the last time) - i had to convince my husband to give it another go as he had previously thought it was terrible & yes this would be the last time we would go to snack taverna.

Greeted by a rude waiter we sat in the back corner & felt very cramped & could hardly hear each other.

We ordered the lamb triangle special & I had the pork. The lamb triangle tasted like it has been reheated & the pork was undercooked & tasted very bland & sweet.. Not what i expected. When we looked through the wine list, we were given the spiel about the wine list being all greek & as if we would know anything about iwne attitude.

I really did not enjoy this restaurant & would NEVER go back - having given it a few tries, i do think I have given it a good chance but was bitterly disappointed.

I gave it one star for location.

  • Pros: cute location
  • Cons: rude waiter, bland food, loud & not great experience. never going back

Not that good, stay away

by gripdxd1

I don't know why this place has such a high rating. The food was okay (nothing special). It was too tiny, I was stuck up against the counter. We had a bottle of wine (which was tasty), but it wasn't even served in a wine glass. It was served in a small water/drinking glass (ick..tastless in my opinion). Don't spend your $$ here.

  • Pros: Wine was tasty, it was a cool mix of different blends
  • Cons: Way too cramped and tight

Nice Neighborhood Spot

by sramspam

Met 2 friends for dinner on a Tues. night at 7pm (no reservation). As expected, place was empty but when I mentioned I was waiting for 2 friends, I was offered the bar to wait. However, bartender quickly realized how ridiculous that sounded and sat me at my choice of table. Wines are all Greek and the glossary on the menu helps you navigate. The apps were tasty and decent sized (non-traditional style mousaka was delicious) mains were more than sufficient size wise and fine in taste for the prices ($18-low 20's). No one had dessert as we were too full but the assortment was varied. It's a nice place to meet friends and sample the many different small plates. Would return if in the 'hood. FYI: By 9:30, the place was packed.

  • Pros: mousaka, asst. small plates, ambiance
  • Cons: short beer/ wines by glass list

You want Greek, go to Astoria

by yeajackson

Every time I walk by this place I wonder why they're so busy. I think it must have something to do with their location near 7th ave. Apparently passerbys on their way toward Soho spot it and think it looks pretty. Sadly, pretty is about all it is.

Lamb, which is a staple in Greek cooking, should be a featured item. Of the three lamb dishes I've tried here, all were dry and lacking in flavor. The kitchen shows an almost total lack of imagination when it comes to both presentation and taste. Bland food is just dumped on your plate. And even if you're craving a dessert at the end of your meal to wash down the banality, don't bother. You'll be sorely disappointed if you do.

Ok so not everything is awful. The greek coffee and the wine are decent.

  • Pros: Greek coffee, wine list, atmosphere
  • Cons: appetizers, main course, dessert

Expensive, average entrees

by rebek

I went to Taverna on a Saturday night and while the atmosphere was cozy, I believe the food is more or less typically ok and definetely overpriced.

We ordered a Greek salad (which was flavorful and large), the saganaki, and the skordalia. The saganaki was very oily because it had been deep fried but not drained well and the skordalia was completely different than what we expected--a puree of potato with a very pungent, almost spicy garlic flavor.

My boyfriend ordered the lamb boureki, which came with sauteed red potatoes and onions. The boureki was soft and flavorful, as the lamb had been ground into smaller bits.

I ordered the lamb souvlaki but was upset because the lamb was tough AND there was so much filling inside of the pita bread that rendered the souvlaki very heavy and slightly soggy to eat.

I would probably stick to a much cheaper Greek restaurant next time for the same or better quality of food!

  • Pros: great ambience
  • Cons: average food, pricey
