Big but bland drinks - cold food

by esnith

Why I stay out of chains like this: drinks are big, but mine was very bland and my boyfriend's was too salty.

Food: arrived at the table very hot on top but very cold in the center - could it have been frozen? Guacamole was very bland as well. At prices like this, I expect more. It was also extremely noisy and tough to get the waiter's attention.

  • Pros: large drinks
  • Cons: bland drinks and food, poor service

Suckling pig entree is to die for! Delicious, cocktails also very good... overall, a yummy place, though the atmosphere could be a bit nicer.

Best Mexican In NYC

by hotlady06

This place is wonderful! I went to Zona Rosa today for lunch with 7 colleagues, and left extremely satisfied! The staff here is very professional and courteous and they helped my friends make a decision about what to order. Food was excellent. Great margaritas, great time, great place. I'll definitely return!

Bad Tasting Food, Worse Customer Service...Not So Happy Hour

by bronxvixen93

A few friends and I met for a quick cocktail and appetizer before we went to City Center for a dance performance. We chose Zona Rosa because they were in the neighborhood, their happy hour extended until 7:30, and they had nicely price margaritas. When other customers complained that the happy hour was over at 7pm, we confirmed their beliefs by stating that we too believed that the happy hour was later. The bartender strictly told us no, despite what we saw on-line. Fine, we were not planning to have an additional drink anyway. The quesadilla appetizers were small and bland tasting. Very dissatisfying. A friend orders a patron with lime juice and was given a shot with a lime. Finally, when the bill came, the Happy hour drinks were $6. We explained to the waiter that the on-line advertising was $4.50. He said, no and that the price of the drink is $6. We asked to speak to the manager because this was the second occasion where there was a discrepancy with what we viewed on line and what was in actuality. The manager came to the table 10 minutes later and said that he couldn't honor the prices online. He explained that he wishes that he can get a margarita in this neighborhood for $4.50, but the price is $6. Basically, he was implying that he couldn't afford his initial prices and the customers had to just deal with his change despite the fact that it was listed otherwise. The manger was most unprofessional as he then proceeds to talk to us for the next five minutes about how expensive it is to run a restaurant vs. addressing his customer's complaints. In addition to being over charged for HH drinks, we also had to correct the bill for a surplus drink order. They corrected it, but it appears that this is a desperate business trying to earn cash anyway they can. There were only 4 other tables filled at 8pm on a Friday. DON"T GO!! Bad Tasting Food, Worse Customer Service...Not So Happy Hour

  • Pros: nice looking retsurant once you past the tacky plastic mexican banner in the front

What a great experience!!!

by caroline2006

We were a group of 8 New Yorkers. We all had a fantastic time and an amazing meal!!! The ambience was fun, the service was wonderful and the food was great. We had a number of very picky eaters and there was definitely something for everyone. We are going back again next week and would highly recommend Zona Rosa for groups of friends!!

  • Pros: Wonderful Food, Location, Decor

Must be a different Zona Rosa...

by rjdio

The reviewer below me wouldn't know good Mexican cuisine if it bit him or her on the...! I've been a regular at Zona Rosa for some time and the thing that keeps me coming back is the consistant quality of food, service, and over-all atmosphere. Some people have no taste, or there is another Zona Rosa out there that people are getting confused with. This is the only one I know of and it is a great place. Keep up the good work!!!

  • Pros: Consistantly, enjoyable, experience
  • Cons: Not, A, Thing

Awful!

by bollynn

Zona Rosa

A great spot if you like to pay Dos Caminos prices for Taco Bell flavor. You will be hard pressed to find authentic Mexican this repulsive south of the border or anywhere for that matter. The only thing more tragic than the food at Zona Rosa are their hideous cocktails. On an expense account I had the liberty of trying just about every one including their margarita which tasted more like lime flavored battery acid. The decor and ambience were nice but not one course met even my lowest standards. I have never had an opinion this strong for a restaurant I didnt even spend my own money to eat it. Consider yourself warned.

Inspired Mexican draws smart diners to an overlooked midtown block.

by Contributor

The Scene
Surrounded by nondescript eateries of various types, the restaurant has a tough time standing out. Lunchtime draws a decent business crowd, but evenings are quiet, with the neighborhood largely emptying out after work. Too bad, because the attractive bi-level space, with cool mod furniture that looks even better by sexy votive candlelight at night, has potential.

The Food
Dishes hail from all over Mexico and have broad appeal--you'll find Yucatan enchiladas, Oaxacan pasilla sauce and queso Chihuahua. A simple shrimp seviche with fresh cocktail sauce shines on the lunch menu, while dinner items tend to be more sophisticated, such as turkey "filet mignon" with bacon and a bold mole negro.
