A COUPLES BEST KEPT SECRET!!

by McPinks

My husband and I love this place for a cozy, intimate chat, great wine and fantastically fresh tapas plates. Don't go if you're looking for a meal! We find that their selection of cheese, shaved prosciutto, and a variety of other Mediterranean snacks are more than sufficient for a light bite. Why would you want to overkill a great bottle of wine anyway? If you're on a budget, their wine list is not for you. We particularly like to go on Sunday through Wednesday nights, as it's communal tables don't seem so cramped, and we're able to find a cozy nook of two bar stools fairly easy. It's pretty cool that it's used as an overflow or waiting room for Batali's restaurant, "Casa Mono" next door, however we like Bar Jamon so much, that every time we make a reservation for Casa Mono, we end up just staying at the wine bar instead. Yes, it's that great! This place is a perfect place for 2 gals wanting to catch up, a first date, an intimate place for any couple, or a fun stop with friends while touring around Manhattan! It truly is a hidden gem, that I wished stayed more of a secret!!!

  • Pros: Fresh food, great wine, cozy ambiance, romantic, great area!
  • Cons: It's almost self-serve, you have to get up to the bar yourself if you want anything. Sometimes hard with cramped space!

Authentic

by Spain123

I was born and raised in Madrid, so I write with the background to substantiate my review.... Bar Jamon is typical and authentic! it reminds me of a tapas bar in the middle of Madrid. The staff is great and personable, and the food, wine, and beer are excellent. My wife and I stopped by after a Broadway play, and we were able to find seats right away.

I will stop by next time I am in NY for sure.

  • Pros: Authentic
  • Cons: Can't think of any!

Never disappoints

by slimtherobot

Great wine list, crusty bread, and paper-thin slices of excellent melt-in-your mouth jamon. I love this place. Yes, it's a pain when it's crowded (it usually is), but I've always managed to get a seat eventually. Its tiny, intimate size adds to it's charm and the menu and wine list are wonderful.

  • Pros: wine, food
  • Cons: it's tiny and it gets crowded

Fantastic

by madrileno1

Came here after a bad experience somewhere else. Best decision I have made in a while. Saved my night. Not a good place to go with friends but beautiful nonetheless. Jamon and Pan con tomate were delicious. Simple and elegant and had a delious bottle Montsant. Highly recommended.

  • Pros: Elegant, Food, Service
  • Cons: Small, Pricey

Great place for a snack and a drink, except when it's crowded!

by maureenuw

This is a great place if you can figure out when the "off-peak" hours are. Otherwise, you'll never get a spot. The jamon is great and they have a nice wine list. Fun place to hang out before your reservation at Casa Mono next door.

  • Pros: Good wine and jamon
  • Cons: Too small, too crowded to fit in

Love the ham and spanish wine selection. This is my favorite spot to grab a bites and wine before moving on to dinner. It's a little cramped sometimes but there's still a good ambiance.

  • Pros: great spanish wines, ham!
  • Cons: small space, can get crowded

An experience

by roxxyro88

Wow, very impressed with the place. If you enjoy a good bottle of wine and variety this is the palce to go. They offer a wide array of wines which was unrecognizable, but very pleased with our selections. Great prices as well. They wine bar ranged from $40-300 a bottle. Equally impressed with the tapas. They offer great compliments to the wine. The smell of toasted fresh bread smeared with fresh crushed garlic, and tomatoes filled with jamon and iberico cheese. Or the selection of aged Mancego cheese. 6 mos, 9 mos.18mos, Hummm, just want you need when you are relaxing with a bottle of good wine and good friends.

  • Pros: wine, food, atmosphere
  • Cons: crowded seating

Overpriced for the Quality

by joep917

I went there with my father and brother - we are all from Spain - the food was good however the place is really tiny and the cost was downright obscene. They serve wine in little caraffes which are $32 and only hold about 1.5 glasses of wine, so it is essentially $21 PER GLASS of wine. The place is very tiny as well.

  • Pros: Tapas, Spanish staff
  • Cons: Price, Price, Price

Don't go to this place

by lynnie1979

I think this joint suffers from the NY attitude that if it's tough to get in and get a seat, it must be good. I went here with my boyfriend who is from Spain and disappointed doesn't really describe how we felt about the food. The wine was good, but overpriced. In his words "a bar serving food like this in Spain would have to be closed down."
