Just returned from NYC and had the pleasure of trying a Magnolia Bakery cupcake and a Crumbs cupcake. The Crumbs cupcake was soooo much better. Soft and moist compared to a rather dry Magnolia cupcake. I had a chocolate/vanilla and my husband had a chocolate/chocolate. Both were delicious! I'm kicking myself for not bringing some home.
AMAZING Oatmeal Cookie Cupcakes
by NYCGal
This is a great bakery with several locations in the city. You have have have to try the oatmeal cookie cupcake. Its GREAT!
Drawbacks... the icing on some of the types of cupcakes isn't that great... go for the unique kinds like oatmeal, red velvet, etc.
- Pros: Huge cupcakes, better than Magnolia
- Cons: Not the best I've had yet
INSANELY GOOD!

Who cares what the staff is like!? This isn't a "server" type restaurant. Grab-n-go. Cupcakes are amazing, sugary that's for sure. One cupcake per person or split one even and it'll be plenty! Worth trying and 100 times better than Magnolia's. While M's is more charming, Crumbs has a selection you won't find anywhere else. You can even order ahead for a gathering/party and have them delivered. This place is wonderful.
- Pros: Best Cupcakes in town!
- Cons: I bet they're LOTS of calories!
YOU MUST GO HERE!

I was very excited to stop in around 9:30 on a Sunday morning and discover they had a 12pk mini cupcake selection! I knew that was the one for me, because I am SO indecisive there's no way I could choose just one cupcake, and I was leaving town that day so there was no coming back for me! The first one I tried was the cappucino one.... and it was TO DIE FOR! As was the Banana Split! Out of the 12 I think I ended up eating (or at least trying) 4 or 5 of them. The rest I gave away to friends on Monday morning when I was back hom in Nashville, TN. They all said they were delicious! I am planning to come back to the city for a shopping trip in the spring, and Crumbs is ON MY LIST of MUST-DO's!
- Pros: The mini-sampler, 12 cupcakes for $16! Delicious!
- Cons: Umm... they are fattening? Haha... that's all I can think of!
If you like the taste of high fructose corn syrup...
by manhattangourmand
Been eyeing this bakeshop on Amsterdam Ave. for months; finally went in tonight to sample a cupcake. Even before I bit into the $2.95 purchase (a chocolate cupcake with coconut frosting), I could smell the corn syrup. What a turnoff! The cake, though deep in color and moist, had zero chocolate flavor. The cupcakes all *look* "gourmet" and "divine" but billing them and reviewing them a such is nothing short of deceptive. Honestly, I've had Hostess cakes and Drake's cakes, that contain the vilest of ingredients yet somehow tasted better than the cupcake I sampled tonight. I took three bites, hoping to catch some essence of "gourmet" flavor, but it wasn't happening, so I threw the rest out. What a waste.
Places like Crumbs and Buttercup Bake Shop on West 72nd Street (which apparently won some award recently) really lower the standard of what truly good baking is. The Crumbs cupcake I tried tonight tasted like it was made on an assembly line and looked as if food coloring had been added to trick the consumer into thinking the cake was more chocolatey than it was. What a disappointment. With all the truly great recipes out there, I wish someone would take a hint from Kathleen King of Southampton and open a bake shop that sells some *basic* baked goods that taste truly homemade -- forget the Oreo and Reese's and cookie-dough varieties (blech). This new age, over-sugared, chocolate-shy, corn-syrup infused baking style may fool people who've never tasted great homemade baking, but as someone who not only grew up surrounded by great bake shops but also did a lot of basic and gourmet baking himself, these boutique bake "factories" doen't fool me, no matter how dark you make the chocolate cake look.
- Pros: Nice location, OK atmosphere, display of baked goods
- Cons: Assembly-line cupcakes that are overpriced and oversweet

The chain crafts decadent cupcakes, either huge or mini, in flavors like Snickers, Oreo, and (unlike Magnolia Bakery) red velvet.

Best Cupcakes in town!! Service needs work
by swapreddy01
OK I have tried many cupcakes in many places. These are the best. I only have been to the UWS location. I always take visiting friends there as well and they feel the same. They are huge and the cake is great and the frosting is just right. I felt like the cake was a little dry for the past couple of months but now it's back on track. The best flavors in my opinion: coconut, blackout, rasberry swirl, cookie dough, and any of the plain w/ frosting. The only thing is that the service is inconsistent. Sometimes they're friendly (you know, the way you should be if you sell CUPCAKES) and sometimes super rude- NEED TO WORK ON THAT.
- Pros: icing, cake, variety
- Cons: SERVICE!!! little pricey for cupcakes
