Best beef on the East Coast, don't eat steak anywhere else

by AgentBauer at Citysearch

My friend and I stayed at the W.A. a few weeks ago and were looking for a good steakhouse. Hands down the best steak of my life. We both had the filet mignon, 12 oz. I had a shrimp cocktail as an appetizer, that was very good too. Neither of us were offered wine or spirits, but I figured it's because we both recently turned 21 and still look young. We're not big wine drinkers anyway so it wasn't a big deal.

I really have to stress how good the filet was. I honestly don't think I could find something like it anywhere else. After eating there I was looking at the website a few days later, and I read that their beef is the only beef on the East Coast that is dry-aged 28 days, or something to that effect. Maybe that's why it was so amazing. Go there. Expect 75-100 per person if you order sides, more if alcohol is involved.

As some people here have already stated, the staff weren't anything special. That said, I plan to go back there again and again regardless because of how good the food was.

  • Pros: Best steak I've ever had
  • Cons: Mediocre service

Fine Food. Very Consistent

by network at Citysearch

Have had several dinners and lunches here. The service is attentive, couteous and prompt without being overbearing.

The steaks are excellent. Lunch salads and sandwichws are also consistantly good, thougha bit pricey-even for mid town Manhattan.

Check out the bar after wall street closes! More business going on over scotch than in Glasgow!

  • Pros: service and the bar
  • Cons: pricey lunch

Best meal of my life

by ajf2213 at Citysearch

I can honestly say that this was the best meal I have ever eaten in my entire life. I went with my boyfriend for a romantic birthday dinner on a Saturday evening, and now we make a point of having dinner here an annual tradition. The portions were big and filling, the food is phenomenal. Lobster, steak, shrip, scallops -- perfect. The desert -- creme brule -- to die for. I'm very surprised about the posts below complaining about the service -- our servers were fabulous. They were attentive, fast, thoughtful and made excellent & honest recommendations on the menu. We left the restaurant that evening raving about the fabulous food and service.

  • Pros: food, service, portions
  • Cons: price

Fantastic place to go for a romantic dinner out.

by stineicus at Citysearch

My husband and I had the pleasure of dining here last Sunday evening. Our concierge recommended it to us since we are big fans of steak. We were not dissapointed! The steak was very tasty. If you like medium steak, I would suggest ordering it medium well. I ordered my steak medium and it was served med rare. (As was my husbands) The portions were impressive as were the side dishes. The asparagus was wonderful! We did not drink any wine, but would love to when we return.

  • Pros: Good steak, great sides, nice atmosphere.

BULL & BEAR A MUST!!!

by irfanhaque at Citysearch

The classic Mens only club back in the day is a brilliant hot spot for locals and visitors. This historical place is newly renovated, still sticking to the Art Deco as the entire Waldorf=Astoria hotel is.

The Tuna Tartar, Char Grilled Shrimp for Apps were amazing.

Both my friend and I had the Surf & Turf. I asked for my steak to be switched with a NY Strip insted of strip, for a few dollars more.

For dessert, we had the desert sampler and a chocolate Soufle. Even though we could not eat another bite, slowly but surely, we ate it all.

You must try out this place, a bit expensice but worth every penny!

  • Pros: portions, Wine Selection, Service
  • Cons: portions, Discourage kids

What you'd expect - a classic

by mphnyc at Citysearch

The Bull & The Bear is the classic "old New York" place you would expect. Good, albeit tired service, storied location, good food. Came for restaurant week, enjoyed a great small filet mignon, tried the salmon, the crab cake appetizers, etc. All good stuff. Lots of midtown execs for lunch, and I hear that the happy-hour scene should be the first stop on the "looking for a rich ex-husband" tour of midtown. You've gotta try this place at least once!

  • Pros: Service, Food, History
  • Cons: old, tired, expensive

Bring a full wallet to this classy bar inside the Waldorf-Astoria.

by Contributor at Citysearch

The Scene
Wood paneling, decorative mirrors and burgundy leather bar stools set the scene for sophistication. Jazz music plays quietly under the tinkle of silver serving trays and murmur of the older, upscale crowd. The sides of the square-shaped mahogany bar curve invitingly toward a central pedestal topped with black statues of the famous financial prognosticators after which the bar is named. A green stock-market ticker moves along the back wall while financial types toast over tables the color of money.

The Draw
"Big martinis and great steaks," the bow tie-wearing bartender will tell you. You name the drink, they'll make it just right--but be prepared to pay. The full menu of the adjoining restaurant is available, including gourmet lunch salads featuring ingredients like yellowfin tuna and filet mignon, as well as a substantial bar menu with plenty of seafood appetizers.

Disappointment Reigned Supreme

by airwave at Citysearch

The service we had would be best described as clumsy, disinterested and cold. It was spotty throughout. Some steaks came out lukewarm. The "sommelier" was able to recommend "Cabernet" because it's "good with steak." Waitress was visibly unhappy. Food was good, as a $35 steak should be. Sides like the sauteed Portobello mushrooms were lovely. We enjoyed some nice wine. But overall the lackluster service and unprofessional vibe was a total distraction. We have no reason to return. There are simply many better places out there.

  • Pros: Good Steak, Atmosphere
  • Cons: Expensive, Service
