Most Authentic Spanish Restaurant in NYC
by citilivin at Citysearch
If you are searching for a delicious authentic Spanish meal, look no futher. La Nacional's seafood casserole and sangria are amazing as are their classic paella dishes. It is a great place to dine, the inner dining area is very romantic and you feel like you have been transported to Spain. I highly recommend La Nacional to everyone!

The Scene
Opened in 1868 as the Benevolent Spanish Society, the restaurant/social club exudes an Old World charm matched by few Manhattan eateries. The utilitarian back room is the joint's heart, with an open kitchen, televised Spanish soccer and a few chatty old men. The more formal front dining room with its red walls and imposing wood furniture attempts a warmer vibe.
The Food
Classic tapas preparations anchor the menu. The patatas bravas, literally translated as fierce potatoes, have all the crispness--and addictiveness--of fast food fries. So, too, the fried artichokes, which are best when dipped in the tomato sauce served with the more pedestrian meatballs. From the grill, opt for the calamari, which is flavorful and less fatty than the octopus. The paella enjoys a lofty reputation, and while served in an authentic iron skillet, the meager portion of its seafood and chicken disappoints.

love this place! had my birthday here and everything was great, the food was delicious, and the prices are extrememly reasonable.
- Pros: food, value
- Cons: not a huge and beautiful place, but cozy
Authentic Spanish food in relaxed atmosphere.

My husband and I go to this place regularly. He's from Spain and it's definitely the most authentic spanish food he's had here. Very unpretentious place and you can often find Spanish expatriates here which is a good sign. The paella is very good, as are the croquetas. And of course, the sangria is a bonus. Definitely recommended.
- Pros: Fairly cheap, relaxed, authentic
- Cons: Not many food options
