Amazing Lunch - Can't wait to go back...
by TribecaChick
I went to Corner Shop yesterday for lunch and fell in love with the menu - great sandwiches, soups, sides, salads with interesting twists. I was thrilled when the food came out and actually tasted as good as the menu made it sound. Especially the Mac N' Cheese - wow. My mom called this morning and said it was the best she's ever had. I am eager to go back and try the Peanut Butter & Banana panini.... atmosphere is also cozy, and they have a cute little bar where you could dine solo. The only thing keeping me from 5 stars is that the server was not overly friendly, but didn't surprise me given that it's NY and a cafe. Overall, will definitely go back!
- Pros: Delicious comfort food
- Cons: Server not overly friendly
My favorite city cafe
by smp432
Its safe to say this is one of my favorite places in NY. I go to school a few blocks away and drag everyone who visits me to this little cafe. It reminds me of Paris. As far as brunch goes, the custard french toast is the best in town, and a must try that I have attempted to replicate at home more than once. The truffled mac and cheese is seriously amazing and the small size is perfect when paired with one of their delightful half salads. The truffled burger is incredible when order with the chefs recommended toppings, however this comes out to be $20 as each of the toppings comes at an additional cost. The garlic fries are delicious. The service may be a tad slow and perhaps pretentious from what these other commenters have said, but I did leave a shopping bag there last night and the woman who answered my call was nothing but charming when assuring me she would hold it for me until tomorrow when I could pick it up. Overall a great place to take a lunch date or a friend. Its like a little secret in the city!
Bad bad bad, and its not a compliment =(

Prior to reading the other reviews, I tought that what happened to us on this place might have been something that doesnt happen often, but I guess I was wrong; they are always downright idiotic and with total disregard for their customer.
The french toast we ordered came burnt and we requested another one, just to be told that it was burnt caramel and that it was ok to eat (they decide for you)
As we requested another dish, the server told my wife we would still have to pay for it. After this, I requested to speak with the manager, a young hippie that after 30 seconds of my explanation bluntly asked me "what do you want" as implying shut up. I politely requested other dish. He left, not without murmuring on his way out to the kitchen.
As he came out, I confronted him to his cowardly complaint of my complain (not on my face)... to make the story short, we ended up leaving the place completely dissapointed with their attitude and lack of interest for listening a customer complaint.
- Pros: Good food
- Cons: Rude staff, uneducated manager
Arrogant staff, ok food

I stopped into this cute looking restaurant with my girlfriend on a frigid Saturday night for a bite to eat before we caught a movie around the corner. We were taken to an open table by the hostess, but before we could sit down some hipster doofus swipes our menus off of the table and tells us, "I need you to move, this is for my friend" My girlfriend asked the guy if he worked there and he said "I'm the manager". So this is what you do on your nights off? Rudely bully customers around. His friend did come and sit down but they were there for no longer than 5 minutes and left. Was it really worth making your customer feel small for that? When the waiter came we pointed the guy out and asked if he was a manager and the waiter said "Why? Do you hate him?" So obviously this guy has a reputation for being a moron. We ordered 2 waters and 2 beers. Got the beer, no water. They gave us two different dinner menus with different selections. We asked for a fried artichoke appetizer only to have them come back and say it wasn't available so we decided to skip the appetizer. When dinner came we ordered another round of beer from a waitress that asked if we needed anything, she never brought it to us. We were essentially done our food when the beer arrived but we still drank them to take the edge off from poor service. I live in Philly and my girlfriend lives in NY so we travel back and forth each weekend. We've come to notice that the service in NY tends to be bad, the wait staff seems to think their stuff doesn't stink because they work in SoHo or the Village. Everytime out in Philly, the waitstaff is well informed, the food is spectacular, and the prices are way better. Never again will I go to this hole with the inattentive, self absorbed waitstaff.
- Pros: Location
- Cons: Rude staff
AMAZING food, snotty staff

probably best meal ive had in ny in a long time, sunny windows, funky atmosphere, DELICIOUS. poor service, i mean TERRIBLE. I did not get my water glass filled ONCE or even offered, took an extra 15 minutes to get the check then when we asked to have it split (between 2 people) we got lip about it, i mean keep your mouth shut and do it and you would have gotten a better tip (duh) instead you made us feel small and got a small tip because of it. Maybe i'll just do take out next time..
- Pros: FOOD, location, atmosphere
- Cons: the service!
Best MacnCheese in the Universe
by a_brit_in_brooklyn
Came here for the first time in August, tempted in by the Hard Lemonade (with vodka - so good!) and it's variation with Blackberry. Have been back several times with different friends, all rave reviews. Rigatoni with sausage was declared "ssssooooo good!" and I have really enjoyed the spinach & goat cheese salad and the awesome truffled macncheese with peas and shitake. Portions are huge. Brunch menu also great, but they don't serves sides when the brunch is running - boo! Waitresses work hard and are gracious. Tables are close together, making for European style eavesdropping. Expect to wait at the weekend. Watch for the tip included on the check - but it is written twice, in big letters, so if you miss it, you're not checking properly!
- Pros: Food has been consistently above average on several visits
- Cons: Cramped
Tasty, but got suspiciously overcharged

I really like Corner Shop. I love their food. The tomato soup leaves my belly warm and happy. And I have been there multiple times for lunch. But, yes, getting seated is a pain. You will stand waiting more than necessary. Although it seems like there's just not enough servers for the amount of tables they've set up. That aside, one time I paid with a credit card, but left a cash tip on the table. I checked my account later and they charged me more than my bill! Not only was it more, it was arbitrarily more so if I didn't ordinarily have a good memory for numbers, I would not have noticed. I called and they corrected it immediately. I do still go back there, but will pay in cash from now on.
- Pros: Good food
- Cons: Service, bill overcharged
Best place for a couple of friends to eat!
by tomcnyc
Great place for a quick meal for two....nice wine and food selection. Place is very crowded for lunch and dinner but if you go off hours a large table is available. Waitstaff works hard and trys to satisfy. Wish they had more specials. Window seating is great for crowd watching. Have been back and recommend.
- Pros: Nice simple menu
- Cons: Wish they had more specials
Cute spot, but wasn't seated
by uniquely3
I thought this was a cute spot and a family owned business and thus wanted to support it. Instead me and a friend were ignored for over 10 minutes eventhough there was a table open right in front of us.
If the spot indicated that attitude was a part of its charm, I wouldn't be so offended. So two thumbs down from me.
- Pros: cute spot, prices and menu seemed reasonable
- Cons: Never had a chance to even sit down, so two thumbs down
wonderful

the conershop is a wonderful little cafe with some of the best people watching in the city. the food is good-- try the haloumi cheese bruscetta (which i am slightly addicted to), the tuna burger with povencal fries, the rigatoni napolitano-- the portion was so big i couldn't finish it. their salad selection is amazing-- i haven't seen a better salad selection in the city. the wine list is very interesting-- i had a bottle of the falangina which was great. although the food took a while, the waitstaff was great-- very friendly, funny, very good-looking-- and they work hard (there are no bussers or foodrunners). the resturant was packed, the atmosphere beautiful, the music wasn't to loud and our dessert (chocolate breadpudding with an amazing cinammon gelato) was the perfect end to a wonderful nyc dining experience.
- Pros: ambience and service
