Shocked

They fired Rory. I couldn't believe it. He was my favorite. They can't seem to hold onto anyone at this place.
- Pros: nice place.
The Broken Cup
by saadun
A quaint little place
Charming, shyful, a little out of place
With nothing broken
Save for the name.
Many a time I sat there
In yellow falls
In bitter winters
In joyful springs
In lazy summers.
Sipping steaming coffee
Munching scrumptious cakes
Dreaming of glory and fame.
Mending my broken heart
In a place where nothing is broken
Save for the name.

Broken Cup Ain't Broken at All...
by thurly
I think I was there when the previous reviewer came in. I don't think I'll miss her or her friend. What a PITA. That said, Bruce, one of the owners of the coffee shop, is a grump -- the kind of grump who enjoys getting as much as he enjoys dishing it out. Personally, I find him utterly charming and a bit dashing around his rough edges. The other owner, Bob, is just one of the nicest people in the world. They don't have a lot of ammenities at the Broken Cup, but their expresso (latte, cappuccino) is the best in the neighborhood. I go, perhaps 2-3 times a day. The regulars are like a big family. Mornings are spent group thinking the NYTimes crossword. The strangers are welcome. I often go with my 2 year old daughter. She's a dynamo. They have always been wonderful with us. (Bruce says: Don't let her stand on the banquette! Some idiot kid just fell of of it. I say: No problem. I get it. It's not a big deal.)
If you like Cheers, if you like Friends, you will like the Broken Cup. Just remember to drop your attitude at the door. You can socialize with the strangers or keep to yourself. It's a great place.

- Pros: Great salads, pastries, and especially great expresso drinks. Love the owners and regulars.
- Cons: Some neighborhood creep complains about how we take over the sidewalk. Grrr...
The Most Awful Experience I've Ever Had in NY
by ashleyski
I've now been in the city for over 3 years, and this is definitely the worst experience i"ve ever had in a coffee shop. I actually just made an account just to bash this place and give it a bad review!!!! I got there and asked if they took credit cards, this really awfully rude waiter shook his head and said no. So I called my friend that was coming to meet me.... she said she had cash. So I sat down, and my friend joined me a couple minutes later. WE were literally only sitting and chatting for 2 minutes when this awful awful awful and rude rude rude waiter came and said we had to order right away and share a table (the place was COMPLETELY EMPTY!!!!!!!) SO i told him we'd move if people needed I table, I also called him a rude name, which he unfortunately happened to hear... so he kicked us out. MEAN MEAN MEAN MEAN MAN. NEVER NVER EVER EVER GO THERE!!!!!!!
- Pros: None
- Cons: Terribly rude and awful service
poor excuse for a cafe
by riaskaya+nyc
it used to be much cozier when we first moved to the neighborhood. Always a bit cramped, it at least had some kind of a comfortable vibe. Ever since they replaced their furniture and put in all those crappy marble tables it feels more like a midtown lunch joint. They even got rid of the comfy couch by the window. The coffee has always been pretty mediocre, but now that the place lacks any atmosphere, I barely ever bother. It's a shame - the area really needed a good neighborhood coffee house. This however is NOT it.
- Pros: just about the only cafe in the immediate area
- Cons: no atmosphere, bad coffee, cramped
One of the best places in the neighborhood

I go to the Broken Cup at least 4 times a week and I have a great time every time I go. It's great to go and meet with the people that live around there. The owners are really great people and the staff is equally personable, especially the one younger guy with the dark hair. It can sometimes get a bit cramped because of the small size, but the place is great and I recommend it to anyone who wants to kill some time with a cup of coffee and a great atmosphere.
- Pros: great staff, great coffee, great locals there
- Cons: small space
Inexcusably rude service
by brijones
Stumbled across this place once for a cup of coffee, like it and came back, only to have a horrible experience with incredibly rude wait staff (one guy in particular). I was ready/willing to chalk it up as one guy having a bad day, until the experience was shared by a neighbor a few months later. Very disappointing, as the food and casual ambiance were good (not great), but I certainly won't go back.
- Pros: Decent food/drinks
- Cons: Rude employees, Terrible service
Hidden find!
by nychica5
I absolutely love this place. They steam their milk so the coffee and hot chocolates are absolutely amazing. I often come here with a book, and I always feel at home. They even have couches and chairs outside for when the weather is warm!
- Pros: Food, Drinks, Ambiance
Great Little Place

A diamond in the rough, the Broken Cup is great for escaping and getting work done. Only thing to add is a wireless internet connection and I'd practically move my office there.
- Pros: Small, Discreet, Quiet
- Cons: , Lots of small tables
