PLEASE READ!! DO NOT TRY THIS SALON!!

I would like to share my experience at the Ted Gibson Salon so no one else falls victim to my mistake. I have never written a review before but felt compelled to write this after my experience at Ted Gibson. As a fan of the television show "What Not To Wear," I had always wanted to experience a haircut with Nick Arrojo but he was ALWAYS too busy to get me in. You can imagine my excitement when I was able to get right in for a visit at the Ted Gibson Salon with Jason and Ted, the new "Celebrity Stylists" on "What Not To Wear." I was not necessarily looking for a "make-over" however, I was definitely excited about the possibilities of a new look. My visit began with a consultation that felt almost invasive.... Jason, the colorist / husband / laughing hyena with those teeth, spent the whole appointment laughing abrasively in my ear as he worked on my hair. If by "new look" Ted Gibson wanted me to have red hair that was cut shorter on one side than the other with colored eyebrows that did not match, then I received what his vision was. Money was not necessarily an issue with my visit but I certainly do not like to throw my money away. I have learned to be more patient. I will wait for you Nick Arrojo. PLEASE HELP ME!!
Love It!!

I've been going to Ted Gibson for about a year now. The first time I heard of the salon was because I'd heard Ted was the hairstylist to Angelina Jolie, but I was sort of intimidated because I imagined it would snotty or pretentious -- not the case at all!
The salon itself is quite small and intimate, and the decor is modern, yet warm. You are greeted immediately when you get out of the elevator, and Ted and Jason can often be seen in the salon when they aren't travelling. (Jason has a large station set up in the center of the salon.) They also offer a wide variety of beverages and hand and scalp massages.
From a skill perspective, this team rocks! I see Liam for my cuts, and Jose for my color. Liam is always vibrant and has a very fun-loving personality. He spends time tailoring your haircut to your lifestyle and physical features so you get something that complements you perfectly. Jose is very matter-of-fact, and a perfectionist (which I appreciate!) He is a highlighting genius, and was able to bring my dark Asian hair to gorgeous, sun-kissed strands. Seriously, his highlights are masterpieces in and of themselves.
The pricepoints at Ted Gibson's are pretty high, but are on par with any high-end NYC salon. Also, they do offer loyalty discounts, as well as referral promotions, so that helps alleviate the monetary burden a bit.
I will definitely continue going here again and again!
- Pros: Non-Pretentious, Personal Attention, Convenient Location

Looking for Allison the Colorist?
by bethymil23
I used to go to Allison for color (I think she was Jason's assistant back in the day), and since she left TG I can't find her! She was amazing, and saved me from some bad color mistakes...I have to locate her! Please post her info if you know where she's working these days...thanks!!!

DWGIELOVER Read This! Best Color Anywhere
by RSB622
I've been going to James for my color for a while now and he is absolutely the best. People usually just assume that I'm a natural blonde, but every once on a while someone asks me. I've even had people stop me on the street to compliment my hair, and they always tell me how beautiful my color is. James is the best colorist at Ted Gibson, and I would never go to anyone else.
As for DWGIELOVER, I hope you see this, James is a gifted colorist. He specializes in natural looking color for women of class. The fact that you left the salon looking different than you look when you color your hair in your bathroom sink is a good thing. Just because James doesn't do fake trashy color doesn't mean you should tell people he's a bad colorist. I have never seen James act unprofessionally on a single occasion, and neither have any of my friends who use him. James is spectacular colorist and he never pushes products or services which you don't need. For the record, a gloss which you seem to think is "cr*p" actually conditions your hair, seals in the color to prevent it from fading, and leaves your color looking even and natural. Just because you can't afford his services, doesn't mean that he isn't a great stylist. He is worth every penny!
- Pros: James, Customer Service, Location, Delicious Beverages
- Cons: ummmm?
Just Not the Same Anymore
by jessmar
I used to be a loyal client of this salon. The prices were high - but not excessive and the quality of the work was beyond compare. However, slowly but surely, they began losing their best staff (I was heartbroken to see Rachel go). To make matters worse, they began jacking up their prices. $125 for a basic-level stylist? COME ON! And to add insult to injury, its just no longer an inviting atmosphere for clients.
I really loved Ted Gibson at one point but now its gone the way of the stereotypical overpriced NY salon. Sigh.
- Pros: High profile owner, good products
- Cons: Way overpriced, Uninviting atmosphere, lost their best people
Best Salon Downtown Manhatten!
by monicaroarie31
My first experience at Ted Gibson was fantastic! I heard about his stylist Jeff through an article in Modern Bride and everything they said about his work was sooo true. He is exceptionally talented and very handsome (huge plus!). The staff was polite and attentive, the price for the haircut was a little more than I wanted to spend BUT well worth it. I am a believer in great customer service and from the complimentary scalp message, to the hand massage with the hot towels and their free delicious drinks (like this amazing european cappucino they offer) have me hooked. The place is chic and yet not pretentious. Oh, and finally although my haircut with the blowdry was $125.00 my stylist Jeff assured me that I would not have to see him for another 12-16 weeks for a shaping and in the meantime if my bangs get to long i can stop in with no appointment for a complimentary trim. Highest Recommendations from a very happy and spolied customer! Thank you Ted, I may not be able to afford your 950.00 haircut but your staff made me feel like i did spend that much bc they were friendly and every bit of the professional. :)
- Pros: too many to list
- Cons: so many handsome men BUT theyre all gay :(
Know before you go...part 2
by dwgielover
Sorry I meant to say do not go to JAMES, not Jason.
JAMES, the colorist is a total waste of time and money. He sucks...his color is blah but his attitude is by far the worst and unprofessional I've ever witnessed. I arrived there for a single process and he "persuaded" me that I needed highlights and some glaze cr*p. My bill came out to over $350! Plus he gave me major attitude when I told him I needed to get out of the salon at a timely manner.
- Pros: Liam, location, not crowded
- Cons: Jason, price, useless hand massag
