One of the best in NYC for seafood

by ThomMoore

I have been a fan of the BLT restaurants since they opened in New York. My wife and I visited the BLT Fish (upstairs) few weeks after they opened and we had an amazing meal. Upstairs called the BLT Fish which is the upscale dining and downstairs called the BLT Fish Shack and it's a lot more casuals just as the name implies.

We go upstairs (reservations a must) mainly on special occasions but downstairs you just walk in whenever you feel like. If they don't have a table available just wait or eat at the bar. Great Raw Bar selection with variety of East and West Coast oysters, crab claws, clams, etc. If you like your raw bar you'll be glad you came here.

At our last visit we enjoyed a nice lobster roll, BLT tuna (I wasn't to crazy about the egg in it) sandwich and a down of oysters. They also have daily specials so you should check it out. Lately they started to offer delivery and pick up to make it even easier to enjoy these delicious delicacies.

One final comment, if you are wearing black pants watch out for the cloth napkin, leaves tons of lint on your black pants.

A must for seafood lovers

by Represent0the0ppl

I've been to both parts of this restaurant BLT Fish, and BLT Fish Shack.

BLT Fish is elegantly causal and has a great menu! Their fish is wild raised, the food is great, and service was great too. My boyfriend and I went there for our anniversary last Friday. It was the first time we've been there for dinner, and we had a great time. They have a retractable glass roof, and a large open kitchen, which adds more points to the ambiance. It was amazing!

They have an amazing full raw bar, and a fantastic wine list with so many selections! (One of the many reasons why we loved it there.)

The BLT Fish Shack is a little more casual, and they have a bar down there. They deliver also (great for those rainy days). I've been there many times. It's supposed to be like a classic New England Fish House in a way. It's great for quick bites also. I love their lobster roll, and my boyfriend loves their BLT Tuna Sandwich. They have great lunch and dinner specials. It's really worth it! My niece always gets their coloring books - they have quite some pages for her to color in, and some games in it also. She always enjoys that. You should most definitely call for a reservation, because you might have to wait a while for a table.

Altogether, both restaurants are fantastic. I have also been to BLT Prime, Steak, and Burger, and most definitely am planning on visiting BLT Market as well. They have great quality food, which is what I look for most in a restaurant! And who can beat their wine selection (over 450 wines)? You definitely get more than what you paid for! Exceptional food and service. Great atmosphere. Have been to the Shack many times, and last Friday was my first time at the main BLT Fish restaurant upstairs, and loved it there. I have, and definitely will go back, and recommend this restaurant to all seafood lovers!

  • Pros: wild fish
  • Cons: should have a reservation, otherwise you might wait awhile

Fantastic Dover sole

by boywonderesq

The four of us went to BLT Fish last night and had a great time. The clear highlight was the amazing dover sole, which is definitely worthy of the press it gets. And frankly, for a $50 piece of fish, it better be! The creamed corn with chanterelles special was also incredible, but we weren't into the goat cheese risotto, surprisingly. We went because Bruni gave it three stars (twice), and we can see why. Highly recommended.

  • Pros: Great fish, great ambience (upstairs)
  • Cons: High-priced fish, but worth it

Bad Clams, Oysters

by trachten

I went to BLT Shack (downstairs) several times years ago and had good meals but I tried it again last night and it was terrible. The clams and oysters on the seafood platter were off color and dried out. We ended up going elsewhere for a real dinner. This place no longer has the same quality as I remember from prior visits. The AC wasn't working well either.

love it

by snaptoit

Went with a few clients and had an awesome dinner. Luckily, everything was on the boss's card because the bill was ridiculous. The dover sole was amazing and they have a great wine selection. Dessert is not just dessert either - its about 3 extras by the time you leave.............lets just say the apple cotton candy did not make it past the subway ride home. Service was a little overbearing at times - i think they knew we were trying to impress and kept pushing more bottles of wine. Overall - a great time

  • Pros: Great scene - great fish
  • Cons: EXTRA attentive service

Perfect spot for a Summer Night!

by iiny

I had heard such great such great things about BLT Fish, that I was so looking forward to my visit. We went a couple weeks ago before attending a show and we had the best time. We were seated right away and our waiter was very attentive and considerate to the fact that we had to get out of there on time. I ordered the crispy red snapper which was amazing and had some delicious wine that they reccomended. The dining room is absolutely beautiful and it was one of the first warm nights we were getting in New York and the glass retractable roof was open. I cant wait to come back and enjoy this spot later on in the summer, when the weather is even nicer. The green cotton candy was such a treat! Overall the service was great, the hostesses and waiters were all very friendly and welcoming. I will definitely come back a few times this summer and would love to try the Fish Shack thats downstairs too...It looked like a lot of fun!

Unsanitary Food & Discriminatory Service---VERY DISAPPOINTING

by beatench

My family and I had an early dinner in BLT fish 5/2/2008. Ambiance was wonderful, and that's the only thing there is in the restaurant. Our server, Faud was too pushy, our food was absolutely nothing great, the only thing good was the special which wasn't even on menu. the turbot and sides were a lackluster, especially the gnocchi, the texture was too gummy and rubbery, almost gluey. We complained to Faud, the server and all he said what that's how a gnocchi is supposed to be like we were stupid and he said that they will not replace the gnocchi. We weren't asking for a replacement, we just wanted to give our feedback. It seems that he and perhaps the kitchen took it against us, when we got the complimentary petit fours and cotton candy, guess what I found, I just thought that the cotton candy was a bit strandy, but no,I found 3 equal sizes of HAIR in my mouth!Disgusting really.I put the hair on the plate, and called Faud the server,he took the plate in an instant as if to hide it.He came out of the kitchen in a SARCASTIC mood saying that the pastry chef doesn't have hair! Unbelievable, they showed no REMORSE, and the manager didn't bother to apologize. They realized we were Asians and we weren't going to make a big fuss since we are not confrontational in nature. The discriminatory treatment and UNSANITARY food is what readers should know about BLT FISH. Avoid this restaurant. Disappointing in every sense.

Good but not great

by julieod

I was very excited to try BLT Fish for my birthday - but was disappointed that nothing wowed us. We ate upstairs on a Friday night and were seated right away. The service was very good- there were many waiters helping us and they were happy to discuss the menu. The amuse busche was ok and the biscuits were good but there was a kick to them that i didn't love. We started with tuna tartare and the octopus appetizer. Both were tasty and prepared well but nothing very memorable. We asked for the gnocci as a 2nd course but the waiter discouraged it and just brought w/our entrees. They were amazing- definitely try them. We ordered the cod and the luna de mer- which i was told was sea bass - but i did not really enjoy. There was two large pieces provided under the whole fish preparation- but it said only for one. I was nervous they were charging by the pound and i would end up paying $100 for that fish i didn't enjoy- but it was only $35. I got the wasabi soy sauce which wasn't great. The cod was very good. The cotton candy was great- the petit fours were a bit strange. It was a nice meal- but not as special as I hoped to be.

LOVE LOVE LOVE BLT

by jehonyc

What can I say... it's like dining in the best seaside restauraunts accross the globe. The fish is FRESH and the atmostphere is like Cape Cod, Sydney and Long Warf... only you're here in NYC. Go early so you don't have to wait... eat downstairs where it's a little more relaxed and eat up... it's wonderful.

great experience

by timothyengel

two thumbs up! this place is a real must. food is great and service is professional. BLT fish has two segments, the first floor New England-style fish shack and the third floor upscale classic fish and seafood restaurant.
