Very expensive for poor quality

by pizzagrlofdafuture

Una currently holds the title of worst pizza/experience in NYC. We arrived right when the place opened so we only had to wait 30min for the 12inch pie to arrive. The pizza was covered in water and only 1/2 the pizza actually had tomatoe sauce on it... so I'm not sure what I was paying for and I would have been better off at dominos!

  • Pros: I enjoyed the company of my friends
  • Cons: tomatoe sauce replaced by water?!!?

Excellent, but pricey

by denverbloke

If you are into authentic neopolitin-style pizza, then this pizza is very, very, good. It might be the best I've ever had. But I travel around the country looking for this style of Pizza. If you're into classic New York, Chicago, California Gourmet, or Pizza Hut chain style pizzas - you'll be disappointed.

This pie has Marzano tomatos and buffalo mozzerella from Italy. Once your taste buds become accustomed to these ingredients, you'll crave them. They are simplistic and the highest quality available. The margherita is my favorite.

For you complainers - how many animals must you consume? A vegetarian meal is a good thing. Also - I can't vouch for the service. The time we were there, it was very early, and they were not busy. Our waitress, and everyone else were extrememly nice, and we didn't wait too long. The $21 price is excessive, but the imported ingredients are expensive for sure.

  • Pros: Authentic, Delicious
  • Cons: Cost, Cash only

The heart of a purest.

by carmen74

I was very disappointed with the pizza. My parents are from Naples, so I was raised on quality ingredients and did appreciate Anthony's attention to detail. I truly like the fact that he keeps everything simple. You will not find meat toppings or other condiments such as garlic powder that will ruin a dish meant to be simple. I feel that Pizza should have a certain ratio of sauce, cheese and crust and in my opinion the crust was just too overwhelming. I dont like a flimsy thick crust , if i want bread with my wine I'll go to a bakery but i was looking for a little more cheese and sauce. The point to a brick oven is a crust with a little crisp to it . I know he uses cheese from Italy which is fine and dandy but its still just pizza. Pizza to me is a comfort food that should be pleasing in both texture and to the taste buds. It was the first time since i was a kid that i did not want to eat the crust. I was sipping wine and who wants to eat dry bread with wine. The price also is a little steep for my taste, and I realize he has to run a wood burning oven, but the thing about pizza is that it should meet a certain pricepoint even with fine ingredients, because its pizza! It was 34.00 $ for a modest glass of wine and a 12 inch pizza. If it were 10.00$ for the whole meal I still will not go back.

  • Pros: Fine ingredients
  • Cons: crust cheese sauce ratio.

I've just been R@PED!!!

by knarf123

I need to cry but can't muster up the tears. I feel so empty inside. I had to head home to take a hot shower and wash myself clean. I have a terrible taste in my mouth. Not only was I r@ped but I was also robbed. Usually these horrible people get away but this time I know their identities. I must stand up to help stop their terrible acts. I can't let this happen to anyone else!!!

These men were the "wait staff" and "chef" at Una Pizza Napoletana.

My girlfriend and I came for dinner after hearing about them on a "Best of list". We walk in to the very uninviting restaurant and quickly get seated at a table for 4 (next to 2 strangers). We were seriously on top of each other. There we sat for 18 minutes. Yes, I counted. 18 minutes it took before we were ever greeted, given menus or drink orders taken. About 10 minutes later they actually took our order. Why did we need 10 minutes. There were only 4 pizza options (none with actual toppings). We were about to order our pizza to split when I realized the pizzas were 12" personal pizzas that cost $21!!!! Seriously??? The best pizza in the city costs $21 for an 18-20". How could this be? It must be wrong. NOPE. A pizza came out that was a bit smaller than the 12" plate that it was on. Once we cut into the pizza I took a slice and all the "fresh" mozzarella slid off the soggy thin crust. I'm guessing it was olive oil but the entire pizza looked as if it had a glass of water poured onto it. I had never seen that before. The cheese was incredibly chewy and hard to bite through. Ugh. This was seriously the worst pizza that I've had since I moved to NYC.

I feel completely taken advantage of and want to help stop this atrocity. Please pass the word to never go here EVER!!! I would rather go to McDonalds... not because it is cheap but because the food quality is so much better there. Seriously!!!

Please do not take this matter lightly.

  • Pros: NOTHING
  • Cons: Price ($21 for a 11" pizza), Taste, Service and more

The Educated Palate Need Not Look Further

by AlphaWhiskey

For those who revel in highest quality ingredients and meticulous attention to detail...read on. Una Pizza's proprietor should be commended for his insistence on holding true to old world traditions regarding the preparation of and the ingredients that compose the pizza he serves. Simplicity is key. Pizza Bianca is not to be missed. Take the rubberbands off your wallet and shell out the bucks for this thin crust. It is well worth it.

  • Pros: Perfect Thin Crust Pizza Made with Only the Highest Caliber Ingredients
  • Cons: No Reservations...Showing up at Primetimes May Mean You Have to Wait

Worst Overall Experience

by nydk2

Disappointed, amongst my worst pizza experiences. There are so many better places to go to in the city.

Here are the negatives: 1. very expensive ($21 for a personal size pizza), 2. extremely limited choices (only 4 possibilities, and of course absolutely no toppings/choices) 3. no condiments (ie olive oil, red pepper), 4. no appetizers (so nothing to eat while waiting for 45 mins for pizza), 5. staff attitude, 6. 45 min wait for pizza (seems like they were only able to make 4 small pizzas at a time for a restaurant capacity of 30-40 people).

The only way the experience could have been positive was for the pizza to have been absolutely spectacular ... and it wasnt ... it just okay ... margherita pizza had watery sauce, the crust was half tasty and half deliberately burnt black (is that supposed to make it haute cuisine?) ... had to cut the edges away and dispose.

Never going back. But its one of those things where i think it is fashionable for new yorkers to go there because it is "in" and so they will.

  • Pros: can tell your friends you went there or impress a date (if thats what you are into)
  • Cons: 45 min wait for food, attitude, v expensive, average pizza, dont bother

Best Pizza I have ever had!!

by anpinla

I went to this place about 3 years ago. I haven't been back since only because I moved to Los Angeles shortly afterward. Maybe things have changed, but it was the best pizza I have ever had. I loved the simplicity of the space, the wine - it was overall a great experience. The staff were nice as well. It's too bad things have gone south here - for me, it was one of those amazing NYC experiences that I will never forget.

forget it

by chutoi

I lived in italy half my life, just to state that I do know what I am talking about. I am also not an arrogant person.

But una pizza napoletana is...if it were a person. All staff is arrogant....a snobbish "no" when asked for pepper....a 40 minute wait on a nonbusy Thursday. A variety of four pizzas, none w meat or fish.....each $ 20+

There are at least 40 better pizza restaurants in the same zip code, let alone in the city.

This just shows you what hype and a short opening season during the week does to (some silly) NYers.

Come on, brighten up, smell the fresh pizza elsewhere.

  • Pros: niente
  • Cons: pizza, ambience, owner, staff, variety, price

Not even the best pizza on the block.

by RonnyMund

I went there reading about the stellar reviews from Ed Levine. What did I get? Rude service. They served their friends before about 7 tables before them. The pizza was average. It was a pool of olive oil. The tomatoes were bland. The crust was decent. I will say that the cheese was really good. In the end, I would pay 4 bucks for what they gave me. Not $20+. Luzzos is right around the corner. Much better and they are really from Italy.

  • Pros: Good Mozzarella
  • Cons: Small, bland, overpriced, rude service
