Really great find

by MaddieNYU

I'm from Seattle and have just these past two months started living in NYC. Haircuts are my one big splurge, even in my home town I'd pay 60$ for a cut and 120$ for a color! so I was hoping to find a least similar prices in New York.

I found Panyc on Citysearch and called to see when they had an opening. He first offered a SAME DAY CUT for 90$, and when I asked if there was anything cheaper he offered a same day 75$ FOR A CUT. Perfect.

I headed over the slightly SKETCHY neighborhood and even more sketchy building where you have to ring up to have them let you in and then take a 3x3 foot elevator ride up to the fifth floor.

However as soon as I got up into the salon my confidence was restored. It's big and open, with lots of light and sparse, but eclectic decor.

There WEREN'T THAT MANY PEOPLE around, probably because it was a Wednesday afternoon, but the staff welcomed me right in.

I had a really relaxing shampoo and SIMON took me to the chair promptly at 4. What a sweet guy! He was really ATTENTIVE to what I asked for. I WANTED TO TAKE OFF A GOOD SIX INCHES so he really coached me through it and all the changes that might occur to my hair. He started snipping and after about 15 minutes I FELL ASLEEP! He didn't wake me up, he simply cradled my head and proceeded to give me great haircut. When I woke up he had very timidly took off length and said that if I decided I wanted it shorter later in the week I could get a trim for free. He's great and really gentle. I think I will go back and get it a little shorter, mainly just to hang out at the salon a little more! With a generous tip for Simon and the shampoo girl my total came to 95$.

Ignore the bad reviews, this place is great.

  • Pros: Super friendly and sweet staff, same day appointment
  • Cons: Very creppy elevator ride and a little pricey

by dirtybayprincess

I am here to say that Pauline is the absolute best hairstylist in THE WORLD! She started doing my hair about 2 years ago and it has been perfect everytime. She is truly passionate about what she does and it shows in her work. I would recommend her to anyone that wants their hair done right.

No BS: Just Great Color and Cuts

by Nnly5

Marylou, PJ and Pauly have come a long way from the little space they began with in the East Village to the current loft on West 17th. This is because they work hard, know the business, make good business decisions and choose to provide great service at prices clients can afford, instead of trying to "wow" their clientele with a lot of idiotic extras (i.e. a cheap glasses of wine, live people handing you toilet paper in the bathroom instead of leaving you alone to rip it off the cob by yourself, which is far preferable...). PANYC is a down-to-earth Salon that makes everyone and anyone, regardless of age, sexual preference and attitude feel really comfortable. No matter what style you are looking for, whether you're conservative or looking to do something completely wild, you will get what you came for and feel you are in competent and creative hands. Marylou has got to be one of the best colorists in New York and PJ, Michael, Pauley, Sonia are a fantastic line up of cutters. Strangers stop me in the street to admire my color and hair all the time and I tell them: "Stay calm and PANYC,"

  • Pros: Excellent Service and Style for Half the Cost in the Area
  • Cons: Weird Vials in the "Lobby": Think of it as NY Character

GO SEE PAULINE FOR COLOR

by AshleySe

I have been going to PANYC for years to get my hair cut, and I’ve always been more than satisfied with the results. I recently decided to start coloring my hair and was told by one of the receptionists that PAULINE was the girl to see. She came highly recommended, mainly because she’s been doing it for so many years and has tons of experience. I was nervous at first because I’m very picky about my hair, and I’ve had bad experiences in the past with people who do not listen to what I want. Pauline paid careful attention to what I asked for and made suggestions appropriately, but did not force her ideas on me. In short, because I could go on all day about how great she is, my hair came out amazing and I received numerous compliments from friends and family, even from strangers! Pauline is diligent and efficient, but besides the quality of her work, she is genuinely nice. So why pay more seeing a master level colorist when you can see Pauline and get the same results in literally half the time? If you’re looking to color your hair, I absolutely without a doubt recommend seeing PAULINE over any one else at the salon.

The hair whisperer

by Lanalila

Ok so here's what you need to know.

First I am about as rational as a 5 year old child when it comes to my hair. I NEVER want to cut it or fuss with it. In fact, there are plenty of days when I find that I actually have mats that resemble dread locks in the back of my head at the bottom. Ok, that's a little embarrassing but it needs to be said. I only brush it occasionally and it usually looks long and a little ragged which can come off as a little charming - which I like.

So, I realized that I need a hair color treatment for the summer just to liven things up and I heard about this place Panyc (cute, paNYC) Uh, it took me a while to get it.

Anyway, I get there after calling for directions while standing right outside the entrance (it IS hard to spot, but the receptionist was more than patient) and I sit in the chair musing at how my moderately ragged hair looks DRAMATICALLY more ragged when compared with all the perfectly styled heads of hair in the place. But, I still maintain my resistance to cut my hair... I'm just here for color. I was a little nervous when the stylist walked up but I have one word for you:

SONIA

If you come here ask for her.

She comes trotting up with blown out feathery blond short hair a huge smile and she starts examining my treacherous locks with a look of intention. She charms me right from the start, but the real achievement was my hair (I'm easily charmed... it's a curse). ;)

She immediately sees that a good 4 inches of my hair is basically dead and I REFUSE to let her cut it. This is huge. For a hair stylist to actually listen to me and NOT cut off my dead ends is really remarkable and I'm sure it was very difficult for her as a professional. Plus, I wanted color which means that she had to work veritable magic to get the color even from the healthy roots all the way down to the dried out ends. She did it like it was nothing! Truly amazing.

I left with rich amazing golden brown for the summer (think coffee with soy milk that has been swirled with caramel and sprinkled with golden powder... yeah, delicious). And I even got a few really good tips for tying to maintain my hair the way it is.

She was patient with my neurosis and anxiety about my hair and I felt completely comfortable and confident. She listened and used her knowledge to work with me and have me leave looking amazing.

I even got bonus tips for my skin care - no joke! My skin looks amazing too.

It's 100% worth the price and Sonia will do whatever you need. Trust me, if she could make my hair work she's the hair whisperer.

Go there.

Sonia works blonde MAGIC !!!

by Cindy101

A couple weeks ago, I went to Panyc Salon because I was in desperate need of a re-do on my color. I had been highlighting my hair for a long time. It got to the point were I decided to leave my stylist of ten years because my was ORANGE and no matter how many times I brought it up, it always turned out the same tone. After meeting Sonia, I felt even better about my decision. She spent a half hour on our consultation, and explained how long it would take to get my hair were I wanted it to be. After mixing four bowls of color of low-lights and high-lights, she completely changed my hair from that orange toned mess to the perfect color. I Found my stylist, I found my salon!!! Thank You Sonia

  • Pros: Beautiful Salon, beautiful people, profecional service!
  • Cons: not close enough to my house

Mary Lou Is Fabulous

by kels716

Went to Mary Lou for color two days ago, let's put it this way my color was a bleached out destroyed mess. I told her I wanted it to be healthy and a little darker with as little bleach as possible, she listened to everything I had to say and really is an expert at what she does. After hours of meticulous work it was finished. I sat with it overnight and decided I needed I little tweaking and it wasnt exactly what I wanted, Mary Loud was absolutely willing to fix it to whatever I wanted that day and it turned out fabulous. I have found a new salon I will be going to and recommend it to everyone. Expect to come out with fabulous hair and be catered to. GREAT SALON!

  • Pros: Listens to what you say, Expert at color

Good haircut, rude stylist

by hapihapi

I would recommend Chris for a cut. I have thick, wavy and difficult hair and he gave me a flattering cut that held its shape for a few months. He seemed bored and rude though, and did a very lazy job at blow-drying my hair out. I left the salon with a lot of fly aways that I think could have been avoided if he took my time blow-drying my hair or if he bothered to put another product or two in my hair.

  • Pros: Example: best croissants in town
  • Cons: What are the drawbacks?

lovley salon, great find!

by tina11

Michael cut my hair yesterday. He was fab, with no attitude, and he really took time to think about what was right for my hair. I was impressed and my hair looked great. and the price (shampoo, cut and blodry) was affordable. I look forward to telling people about the salon. I hope they get a sign outside to announce their presence. They deserve it.

  • Pros: great space
  • Cons: there is an elevator, don't use the stairs unless you have sneakers on...

Fabulous color from Sonia!!!

by mxrus

This was my first time here and I was extremely pleased with the result. I got a fantastic touch up on some severely out-grown roots, high lights and low lights. The blond matched my skin tone and previous hair color perfectly. Sonia was super sweet and adorable. I also recently went to her to get my bangs trimmed for a special occasion and I was out of there in 5 minutes with sleek, symmetrical, and seemingly new haircut!! I got compliments all night!

Thank you Sonia!!
