WORST SOUND EVER

by LESSSSSSSSS

All of the owner's friends must have voted to place them as second best venue in town. Just as one of the positive reviews here was posted by the owner...um, tacky. This place is small, dark & has the WORST SOUND of any venue anywhere. I had to leave the show, even though my favorite band was playing, because the sound was terrible and three times too loud. Trust me, save your money and see your band ANYWHERE but cake shop.

Armed with a fully-stocked bar, coffee, vinyl, live music and cupcakes, this multipurpose hangout is fighting its way into the hearts of hipsters.

by Kara Zuaro

In the orange-walled street-level cafe, local LES folks sip coffee, flip through the Village Voice and snack on cookies and croissants. Music junkies head to the back room, which houses a well-chosen--and local, indie rock-heavy--selection of CDs, and vinyl and cassette tapes. In the bar downstairs, beer, wine, cocktails and live music are served with a smile. In the basement bar, a small stage boosts local musicians, with live music seven nights a week. Underexposed bands will have better luck landing a show here than they would in similarly sized rooms at Lit or the Delancey. A coat of black paint makes the long, narrow area look more sleek than dreary, and the walls are lined with bench seats, mismatched ottoman cubes and a connected row of retro auditorium chairs. When bands aren't playing, a jukebox packed with offbeat albums and staff-made mixes promises an eclectic soundtrack.

Laid-back and enjoyable

by sg3000

Just for the record, this place now has a fully stocked bar. I went here for the first time on a Saturday to check out some bands. The acoustics were surprisingly good, besides some mic squeaks that were corrected rather quickly. The beer's cheap and they have a decent selection. The bartenders are efficient and appeasing, if not overly friendly. The crowd wasn't pretentious, which was a nice to see for once in an LES bar. I'd definitely go back.

  • Pros: Good prices, crowd

Cut Me Off a Piece of That

by ritzgirl21

What a bargain for $8 you can see 4 amazing bands at the downstairs bar. They have such a great selection of wine and beer on their menu, that I looked no further for liquor and didn't realize they didn't serve it there. They have an excellent selection of all the best wines and beers at reasonable prices. The service is great, crowd is solid, and music is some of the best new acts you've ever heard. Only two negatives, 1) hard to find & 2) gets a little crowded in the small space so you may have to overcome a little BO.

  • Pros: Affordable, Hot music, Hot crowd
  • Cons: HOT & STUFFY, Crowded, Hard to find
