Though it was advertised as having "Live Music/Cuban band on Sat. nights (which is the reason I went) there was NO LIVE MUSIC & I was disappointed.I was hoping that the food would make up for it, but it didnt & neither did the drinks. The drinks were VERY watered down, mind you we had a "flaming matador" that was topped off w/ 151 supposedly. For 12 bux a pop it was a waste. The churrasco was undercooked & the baccalao (cod tapa) was chewy. The fish wasnt fresh you could tell which is a BIG no no.Not to mention the place was empty yet they were smart enough to sit a COUPLE right in front of a group of loud drunk girls. There was a million other tables yet they sat us by a birthday party of loud college girls. I am not a complainer and have never felt compelled to leave a review on citysearch but by the end of the night I left annoyed in every way, out 60 bux for 2 tapas & 2 drinks & will NOT be back. Being hispanic myself, the food was shameful and poorly cooked. Theres a MILLION other tapas places in NY, dont waste your time here. (oh and i forgot to mention, they decided to clean the floor right behind us also... to top it off I had to smell chlorox for a good half hour... yeah very appetizing! )

20 of us ate here for a freind's bday and were served quickly and efficiently. The food was great. That paella was good enough for a return trip. Looking forward to eating there again.
Pros: Paella
Cons: No special pricing

I've been to Pipa twice and will never return. The first time was on a Saturday and it was really crowded. The tables are really close so you are practically sitting on top of the person next to you. I went again last night. The server came by 5 times to ask if we were still working on the plates that had food on them. Then the manager came over and asked if he could by us a drink at the bar so we get up from the table. There was no one waiting for a table when we got to the bar. They were trying to rush us out of there for an hour for no reason. Don't waste your time, food is ok, service is terrible.

I went here for cinco de mayo to have dinner, because there was a long wait at all the mexican restaurants in the city. Big mistake. We arrived at 8:15 and did not get served until 9:45, and this was just appetizers. There weren't that many tables to serve, otherwise I would understand what the hold up was, but, the waiter didn't come to our table to tell us that our food would take a while. Just bad service. We had to keep asking the waiter why our appetizers were taking so long. He just kept telling us that it would come out in a couple of minutes. Well, this wasn't the case...because as it turns out we wait over an hour. Horrible!

I came on a weeknight to see family and it wasn't busy at all. We all enjoyed our food and the service was good as well. It was awhile ago so I don't recall what we ate but the Brahma beer was good.

I've been here countless times, and whether I came as a party of two or as part of a large group, the experience has been great. The waitstaff if very friendly, and the atmosphere is welcoming. My personal favorites from the menu include the sangria, the paella, and any of the tapas. Be sure to listen for the specials - they are always interesting and delicious. I noticed a few of the bad reviews below, which left me compelled to write my own review. I'm baffled by how others could have a bad experience here. The only conclusion I can draw is that we're not hearing the whole story (like showing up late for a reservation or being inconsiderate to the staff). If you are a polite and reasonable patron, Matador will do their best to make sure you enjoy your evening. Don't hesitate for a second - check it out!
Pros: Sangria, tapas, happy hour, waitstaff, live music Saturday nights (sometimes)
Cons: None that I can think of

Drinks are really good here. The place is small and service is NOT #1. I had an Spanish tortilla and a stuffed chicken and did not like any of them.
Pros: Drinks are good here.
Cons: Have a drink or two and go someplace else to eat.

Food has promise at the price point but is eclipsed by staff that isn't attentive or working together. Tip to folks visiting the neighborhood -- there's better tapas/sangria/service 3 blocks away. In the 5 minutes we waited by the door, multiple waiters passed us by but not one made eye contact much less said anything. Hostess is a disaster -- did not display professionalism when she finally did show up, and awkwardly waved us back into the server traffic before our table was cleaned. Serving stations are oddly interspersed next to the tables (rather than in an alcove) such that waiters are practically leaning on their customers when they enter in orders. When we tried to pay, no other waiter looked at us and we couldn't get a passing busboy to take our credit card.
Pros: Not too expensive tapas
Cons: Service, ambience

Just had dinner at Matador and honestly was an all around great dining experience. From the tapas to the entree and the Sangria, it all worked well and the service was attentive. Thank you.
Pros: Food & Drinks
Cons: none
