True Italian, but it ain't cheap!

Nice environment in SoHo, with good service and real Italian ownership. The food portions are "French style" (i.e., on the small side), which is fine, but the prices are also "a la French" (i.e., exorbitant). A dinner for two can easily set you back $140, which I don't think is worth it. Still, a good experience once in a while, or you can just have a drink at their bar and move to one of the other eateries nearby.

Incredible simple fish

I have been to Ama a couple of times for snacks and cocktails but never for a full meal. The fish of the day was the most flavorful, well cooked, and overall fabulous fish I have ever eaten. (Including my many visits to Italy and Greece.) The wine list is swell and the tomato/mozzarella salad was perfection. The rest of my party of 5 for lunch was very pleased as well with their various pastas. Authentic and well priced for such quality food and cooking. (They even brought fresh whole lemons with my fish which is rare in the US.) Woke up today planning when I can go back. Hopefully, this week!

Really great food and atmosphere!

Not really sure where the bad reviews came from, but the food was really good and though low key the atmosphere was great. Was really one of those restaurants that make the NY restaurant scene great. Not a place focused on 'see and be scene', but great food.

Great Food, Amazing Date Place!

I brought my girlfriend here for a date, we saw them on citysearch and decided to try it. We were extremely happy that we picked this place to dine! The food was delicious and exquisite! The wine list was absolutely right on par with everything and the setting was so romantic. We had a great time there and were extremely happy with our meal! We're definitely big fans and will be going back very soon!

Disappointing from start to finish

I had been wanting to try Ama for quite some time, having walked by many times and been attracted by the decor, and based on some of the reviews online. But alas, looks and reviews do not overcome mediocre food, poor service and bland atmosphere. We had the octopus & artichokes as starters, and Veal & fish of the day as mains. All was consistently boring and tasteless. The single waiter covering the whole restaurant was overworked, and the owner who was helping him was apathetic and distracted. Perhaps we caught them on a bad night, but that of course does not excuse the food. With so many other great restaurants in the neighborhood, this one just doesn't stack up.

Excellent food, average service

Enough with the blogging, this is a review page. Ama has great regional cuisine and stands out compared to some of the other italian restaurants in the village. I would definitely recommend the orecchiette saporite for you meat lovers. They were super busy when I went so I can't complain about the service being average. All in all, its a great restaurant, but I would suggest that you make a reservation before going.

jakemec you must be honest Ama ia a great restaurant

Miss jakemec made a reservation thru opentable on Saturday 2/10/2007 for 4 peoples at 2.25 pm for 8.30 pm reservation after 5 minutes 2.30 pm I called and left a message (no one as a heavy accent in my restaurant) as a courtesy call since I did not have a table for that time.

To be clear open table is a tool and always I keep the table for anyone that use opentable to make a reservation but if I don't have a table I always call the person and try to accommodate. Miss jakemec had a reservation at 8.30 pm 5 hours later after my first message I called again and let know that her reservation was no longer available,(if I made two phone call that means something??) at that time she told me that she has a confirmation number and she was working and she just get my message?? Miss jakemec I have every night many no show reservation made thru opentable and I never called anyone and every day I have so many peoples cancel the reservation made thru opentable without call my restaurant just one click and the reservation disappears from my screen , so what should I do??? Write 100 reviews per day about that??? You were rude with me last night and refused any help so please be more responsible when you use opentable .I?m the owner of Ama and I work hard to keep my restaurant in great condition, again opentable is a great tool for your convenience for me if you cancel or you do not show up I do not get made or complaint to anyone but just last night 29 peoples did not show up and all of them made the reservation thru opentable. Thank you but don't do it again to any restaurants in NYC because there are so peoples like myself that are working 14 hours per day and we do not deserve this kind of revenge if you don't get the table the same day that you made the reservation. and after two courtesy calls

Don't insult my intelligence. My reservation was made on Tuesday, February 6th for 2 people at 8:30 p.m. I have the Opentable confirmation that clearly indicates the correct number of people as well as the date I made the reservation. I did not make the reservation that same day. You were rude to me and I will not stand for that; no one should. Clearly you have a service issue at your restaurant as a number of other reviews have indicated that as well.

Terrible service, mediocre food.

A man who seemed to be a manager or owner (not dressed like a waiter) took drink orders from the first four of our party of ten to arrive, and then practically had to be tackled to take the rest of our party's orders. He would only take one at a time, then try to escape before anyone else could ask for anything, and had to be physically stopped so the others could order. One of the drinks was completely wrong, and when it was sent back, he gave my friend a nasty look and said nothing as he took it, like he couldn't believe she had sent it back. I waited tables for eight years, and especially for such a big party, I would have expected better (at least polite) service. But I guess it wasn't his tip on the line. I got the pork chop, which came with a delicious mushroom and cream sauce, but the meat itself was at least half fat. Mashed potatoes came with it, but no vegetables at all. I won't go back. There are plenty of other wonderful Italian places in the city in the same price range, like In Vino on 4th.

FABULOUS food...a real treat!

Booked the reservation based solely on its location and the fact that everyone wanted to eat Italian. And was absolutely completely pleasantly surprised and over the moon about the food! Being that the parents were in town, I was hoping to have a very good meal, but when 5 people ordered appetizers and dinners..and all 10 plates were amazing with everyone arguing that theirs was the best, i knew we found a gem. The portion sizes are perfect too. Go early if you want a little more attention from the owner who is happy to help you with the menu. I'll be back for sure.
