Sakes alive! I was a regular for the past year so I knew this landmark place was for sale. But I went for dinner with a few friends tonight and overheard some people outside who claimed to be the new owners - they were bragging that they tricked the old owner into giving them his restaurant and that they were firing the entire staff. They kept saying "dead weight." They were so obnoxious! I like the old owner and I love the waitress and some of the bartenders - that's the reason I eat there all the time. I feel bad for the old owner he was a nice guy and it was clear he loved this place - I hope he never catches wind of how the new guys are talking about him. I guess I'll have to find a new hangout. It's still open though. If you've never been there you owe it to yourself to see this pioneer south Brooklyn joint before its gone forever. Of course I used to work in banking so I know that deals sometimes fall through - so maybe the the BarBQ sign and jukejoint tin walls will stay up! Until they rip them down though I'll keep coming back for more of the best ribs and bourbon in Brookyln.

Pros: awesome food and staff

Cons: might shutter its doors soon

My wife and I recently made the trip to BarBQ on a Saturday night. We had really high hopes based on many of the reviews here, but sadly we were seriously let down. From the moment we walked in something seemed off. There's a smell in the place that just doesn't seem right. The menu covers all the bases of BBQ. The pork was bland, not much smoke flavor at all. It seems that they do an average business, it wasn't too crowded for a Saturday night. All in all we won't be going back. Too bad because it gets some good reviews, maybe that's just the staff trying to bump up business?

Pros: Has a bar

Cons: Room Smells, BBQ lacks flavor

I was in the mood for some barbecue and since our favorite place closed early that day, I suggested to my husband that we try out this place since it got a lot of great reviews here in citysearch. We ordered the combo platter with pulled pork, ribs and smoked sausage. The ribs and the pork lacked flavor. Very bland. Even if I drenched it with the sauces, it still did not do it. Maybe a little more salt and pepper? The smoked sausage did not have the smoked flavor. Very plain as well. Maybe the hot sausage is the better option. The sides we got, bbq beans and coleslaw are nothing to rave about either. Good thing it was inexpensive. On the other hand, the atmosphere made the experience somewhat lively. There was an upbeat energy in the place and there was live music too. Sadly though, I don't think we're going back here.

Pros: inexpensive, live music

Cons: bland barbecue

Everything is good from the classic pulled pork sandwich down to the keylime pie. Live music is always good and the best with alot of friends. The bartenders are personal, funny, friendly and super good looking. It is a casual place that's classic and downright awesum! The unique beer and bourbon selection is soley only there. I didn't even drink bourbon nor hardely eat meat before I discovered this juke joint but now it's all bottoms up. The bar stays open later than other bars and some Fridays Tom the DJ really rallys up a stir of interestingly drunk people. Don't read any more reviews.. I'm from the south and the barbeque is good... just go ...go now..and have a michter and alagash for me!!!

Pros: tasty

Cons: cant live there

The food is great, but the waitress is why I keep coming back. I've been coming here every couple weeks since I moved from Amarillo. Pulled pork, ribs, a little different each time. Every time I go I have a different kind of bourbon and I have about 250 visits left to go before I get to the end of their menu. But the thing that makes this my favorite restaurant in New York? The waitress. She's funny and beautiful. My girlfriend agrees -- so I'm not in trouble for writing this! As far as I'm concerned that waitress *is* BarBQ. She's also about to have a baby which means there'll be another one of her running around. If her kid starts working there in a few years I think I'll start eating all my meals there.

Pros: wonderful stafff, good food, great bourbons

Cons: no cornbread

Goddammit! I just blew half an hour writing an excellent review only to have it wiped by some glitch! let's try the abbreviated version. Good place, you gotta go. If you're a picky, finicky wuss, maybe not. The rediculously hot bartender/waitress was on us in seconds for our drink orders and to deliver the menus. I snagged a pulled pork sandwich, mac-n-cheez, greens and a pint of Harpoon IPA. The GF grabbed the pork, some slaw and another Harpoon IPA. Tasty, juicy pork! Kinda weak bun, but it's what I'd use at a BBQ. Not an issue. I'm not a 'slaw kinda guy, but it was like good, rough, home made slaw and I'd have happily eaten the whole portion if I didn't order the other sides. The hands-down best mac-n-cheez I've had in quite a while. Like the stuff they used to have at catering at the Fox Theater in Detroit, that church kitchen in Bed-Sty and the old 'Soul Food' joint that was on 139 and Convent two decades ago. If you're looking for Kraft style, go commit suicide. The collard greens were avererage, more 'pickeled' tasting than sauteed the way I make 'em, but well within acceptable limits, I happily ate them all. It's just a little bar with some tables, a kitchen, an owner who comes over to ask how hungry you are and lots of bourbon. My quasi-veggie GF snarfed down that pork like she just spent a month in Darfur, that says something right there.

Pros: Juicy pork, perfect mac-n-cheez, quick friendly service

Cons: The buns could be better, they really need some cornbread, LOL

I just moved into the neighborhood and I love this place. Good barbeque, great staff, nice young local bar crowd and a huge beer and whiskey selection. I enjoy the pulled pork, smoked portobello sandwich, gigantic wings and this awesome organic hard cider called Scrumpys. They could use a few more side selections but aside from that I don't have any complaints. If you're in my neighborhood, give it a try

Pros: Inexpensive, Great Barbeque Sandwiches, Fun Staff

Cons: Could have biscuits, corn bread, or corn on the cob. More sides!

I went there for the first time after finding this place online and what a mistake. The food was awful- the meat was dry- sausage was microwaved and tough. The beans were mushy and definitely old. I paid $17 for a tiny portion of bad, dried out , clumps of pork- that was still whole by the way- not pulled at all. It was terrible. Will never eat there again.

Great barbeque in a very cool atmosphere. Really enjoyed the ribs and the pulled pork, and the sides were great, too. Also like the big selection of bourbons...lots of stuff I'd never seen before. Friendly and quick service. Highly recommended!

Pros: Great ribs, bourbons

Cons: Sixth Ave

I don't know what kiki1234 is talking about. The food here is amazing, the sauces are homemade by Scott and Frank, and there IS barbecue sauce if you want it. Unlike other places that soak their meat in wet sauce to cover up the deficiencies in the cooking, Bar B Q doesn't need to hide anything. So you can season your food the way you like. Besides, with the most extensive bourbon menu in town and great service (again, I have no idea what this impossible-to-please person is talking about), plus a cool cast of characters that one would actually want to hang out with (unlike almost every other place in the 5 boroughs), Bar B Q is my destination of choice. I live across the street and am there almost every night.

Pros: Great food, great bourbons and whiskeys, great people

Cons: None
