Love this place!

by beer girl nyc

Amazing beer selection, quality food and friendly, super knowledgeable bartenders that are willing to let you sample before you decide. Lots of space to sit and talk to friends or listen to music. Definitely check out the Belgian Room next door!

Hop Devil Grill

by Littleseed

Took a friend up for her birthday; the music was a bit like a random jukebox selection. The shots were expensive and we will not be going back due to the atmosphere and the price.

  • Pros: Nice building and service
  • Cons: bathroom is unisex with see through door

They had two things going for them

by racshade

Hop devil grill never had very good lunch/dinner. They did have a kick ass brunch and a very good beer selection. For some reason they decided to get rid of brunch. I know enough other restaurants with tons of beer, so I wont be going back.

  • Pros: Good Beer
  • Cons: They got rid of their Brunch menu

great place for a birthday

by deener84

the great service with smile was definitely what made this place great--they gave us a free round of kamikazes and a gift certificate in celebration of the birthday, and didn't push anyone to order food or more drinks. they even took the liberty of putting up a ton of balloons for the occasion :-P

the crowd could have been better but the quiet allowed us to actually have audible conversations despite being at a bar in st marks.

drinks were relatively cheap and they do have a wide variety, from beers to cocktails to margaritas.

  • Pros: wonderful service, quiet enough for conversation
  • Cons: bit of a dive, $8 margaritas at the bar weren't very good

Devil Deal is Real

by Alhanson

This place was a little farther than I thought from the subway, and I didn't really appreciate walking in the rain three blocks. When I got there, it was WELL WORTH IT!

We were greeted by the friendly manager very promptly and ushered to a table. To my great relief the Magic/Lakers NBA final game was on the TV and there was room to see it!

The beer selection can be a bit daunting, but the server was very friendly and suggested good beers for us. I had the Captain Lawrence Pale Ale. Highly recommended. My friend had a glass of mead. Mead! Who serves that? It was the first time I ever tasted Mead, but it wasn't bad.

The food here is real good. Especially the wings. We wound up getting a second order. If you like heat, order hot, and not medium. Medium isn't hot enough. The server warned that nuclear is dangerous, and I didn't want to go there my first time to this restaurant. My friend had the fish tacos, and they earned her raves. Looked pretty good with sides of rice and beans.

Music on was good. Sort of a mix of old school rock and more modern indie type stuff. I'd say overall that the atmosphere rocked, prices were more than fair and I will definitely be going back the Hop Devil. Its a great deal. And that is my first Citysearch review.

  • Pros: Good food, lots of beer to choose from, Mead, service
  • Cons: Not too close to the subway

4 Things I cannot live without- Money, Oxygen, Season 3 of Lost, and Hop Devil Grill

by MarlowFurniture

I travel from DC to NYC periodically and like a North Star, Hop Devil Grill shows me the way to good spirits and good company. The only thing that flows better than that of their transcendent beer is the charm and laughter-inducing bartenders. I recall one time, coming off the heals of a horrific divorce, I stopped by Hop Devil. And in an instant, the entertaining bartenders and convivial atmosphere helped me forget all about the evil succubus that tried to dismantle my very soul and being. Thank you Hop Devil, for not only being the best bar in the Village, but also a therapeutic counsel to my psyche. My 20% gratuity is only a drop in the bucket of the debt I owe to you.

  • Pros: ambiance, bartenders, beer selection
  • Cons: they don't have funnel cake; I love funnel cake

AMAZING BEER SELECTION

by TheolWateringHole

Reaaly really great beer selection and they change it up every day so you can always try something new (both on tap and in bottles). Space is nice and they have a lounge connected to the grill portion, so depending on your mood you can switch between the two. I'm not a big tequila drinker, but they have a menu dedicated to that as well. Plus...they serve mead, MEAD! How cool is that :) This is a regular joint for me (and I'm not a big bar guy).

  • Pros: Great beer/wine/tequila. Great space. GREAT specials.
  • Cons: Food is good, but not amazing

Great beer, food and atmosphere

by Jackass

I have been the the Hop Devil Grill twice, and so far, I really enjoy the good service and food. We had brunch there on Sunday. It wasn't very busy, so the service was naturally fast. I had the Huevos Rancheros which was tasty, and came with an awesome bloody mary for just $6.99. Beat that price anywhere, I double dare you. The food has a southwestern/Mex-Tex theme, as does some of the decor. There is TVs for watching sports, which I really like. I might be heading over to the superbowl game here on Sunday. The big draw is the beer selection. They have two big bars and like 50 taps pouring everything. and maybe another 100 different bottles of rare beers. If thats your thing, great, but they also make kickass sangria which we had on Wednesday night. Another great deal at $10 a pitcher. A full 1/2 gallon of Sangria for $10. This place truly rocks.

  • Pros: Good prices, very big space, nice bar and tasty grub
  • Cons: can't think of any

Cool Bar, Freakin Awesome bartender, and FINALLY a place with good music!

by jonnybravo57

Awesome beer selection. Bartenders kicked butt. Overall awesome night.

I'll keep it short, this place rocks more than anything on the over populated hipster driven St. Marks. My friends and I popped into this place, not expecting to stay long, but ended up staying the WHOLE night.

The music rocked. The crowd was diverse. And it wasn't super crowded. And the bartenders were awesome...seriously, stop in and see for yourself. Not much else to say, except this bar is definitely in our top favorites now when we party in the village.

  • Pros: Awesome beer, cool bartenders, and great music. Location rocks too.
  • Cons: .....at one point, I heard a Britney Spears song....but I guess girls like that....

Wide selection of beer but some strange decisions by mgmt.

by keithk

I sense trouble brewing here. This has been my favorite all-around beer bars for years, having a very wide selection of drafts and usually a relatively quiet atmosphere, along with above average bar food. It never gets so crowded that it's uncomfortable (dba, blind tiger). The staff is knowledgable and helpful; I have been hanging out here for years, and never experienced the rudeness or incompetence that some other reviewers report. But things are subtly changing: maybe the management wants to attract larger crowds.

1 Most important - Less Beer- They put in a frozen margherita machine and reduced the number of beers available by the bottle. They are slowly getting rid of the Belgian Room's focus on Belgian beers and casual atmosphere and turning it into a "lounge."

2-Worse Food- They changed the theme from a beer-lovers bar to a southwest theme, raising prices across the board and adding higher-priced and totally average tex-mex fare.

3-a fussy and strange focus on spraying air freshener around, made the air sickeningly sweet last night

I'm worried about the track the management is taking. Still a great place based on wide selection and lack of crowds, but I fear it has jumped its shark.
