Luscious cupcakes in Chelsea
by clarknyc at Citysearch
The New York cake and cupcake competition is fierce and in my opinion, Big Booty takes the cake prize. One cake I ordered was a luscious German Chocolate cake. A perfect version of the classic. They also sell single slices of all their cakes and many cupcake versions. Other sublime offerings include coconut cake and Red Velvet, and Dulce de Leche cupcakes to die for. The service and prices are also incredible. If you are like me and are tired of dry cupcakes with grease icing from those other places...try Big Booty...the cake is light, flavorful and moist with heavenly icing.
- Pros: Fresh, delicious baked goods
- Cons: They run out of red velvet sometimes
Best Cupcakes, Gluten Free baked goods, and FRIENDLY owner
by chelseaneighbor255 at Citysearch
I just looove Big Booty. The owner is so incredibly nice and the desserts (esp the dulche de leche cupcakes) and cheese rolls are to die for. I have friends that are all allergic to gluten and they swear that big bootys rolls are the best out there! And I have never tried a cupcake as good and original as the dulche de leche. Mmmm. And who wouldnt love a company called big booty?! Their t-shirts are hysterical! Its my fave neighborhood spot!
- Pros: gluten-free products, dulche de leche cupcakes, flan, bread pudding, coffee
- Cons: they arent open on sunday....sigh
Best baked goods in Chelsea. Charming owner and staff. Why isn't this place mobbed?
by michaelhanko at Citysearch
A cupcake maniac, I have been trying out all the trendy spots in the neighborhood, searching for that perfect blend of moist cake and flavorful but not-too-sweet frosting. I have never been satisfied with the fare from places like Billy's and Magnolia, finding them temptingly pretty, but often dry and devoid of buttery flavor.
Recently lured into Big Booty's admittedly not enticing entrance by some photos of the hunky proprietor in the window, I was introduced to my dream cupcake--a red velvet with an exotic subtle hint of something special (was that pineapple juice, perhaps?) and topped with delectably tart/sweet frosting--PERFECTION! Even my finicky (in the best way) partner was bowled over by the high quality of this dessert. (We also shared a sweet arepa--the perfect balance of sweet to salt to oiliness.)
I have sampled the Booty bread--super-moist and hearty and the cheese buns and "rocks"--highly addictive and texturally interesting. I was delighted to be served twice so far by the hunky proprietor himself, a sweet and appealing purveyor of products he is obviously proud of. On another occasion, the store was staffed in his absence by a charming woman who--it turned out--is his sister. It makes me happy in this increasingly chain-infested neighborhood to give my custom to a true family-run business.
Don't waste any more of your money at the superficially pretty, over-popular places......run your booty over to Big Booty and taste the best!
- Pros: food, staff
- Cons: space
Good cupcakes.

I've had only the red velvet cupcake from this place. And it was YUM O (as Rachel ray likes to say....) Someone bought it for me so i've never actually been there, but I will in the future.
Cheese rocks rock!
by weetara at Citysearch
Don't listen to the editorial review about the yucca-flour cheese rocks--crusty on the outside and amazingly soft, bready, and cheesy on the inside, the rocks are addictive and, in my opinion, the jewel of the shop. (Also, along with the softer cheese buns, they are gluten-free.) They're amazing fresh out of the oven and still very good cold (though the lovely staff is always happy to warm one up for you). I have gotten multiple friends addicted to them.
Other items I've sampled there that have been divine are the red velvet and dulce de leche cupcakes, the rice pudding (which the owner's mother makes), the guava-stuffed bread, and the hummus sandwich on thick slices of whole wheat. Tasty soup, too. I found the booty buns and corn-cheese pancakes less exciting, but everything else I've had at Big Booty has been wonderful, and the good prices and friendliness of the owner and his staff will keep me a regular at this bakery for a long time.
- Pros: cheese rocks, cupcakes, rice pudding, bread, great service
- Cons: cheese rocks are so addictive, sometimes I have to force myself to stay away
Wins all Cake Wars

The bakery that has my friends rolling around in cake ecstasy is Big Booty Bread Company at 261 W. 23rd St. between Seventh and Eighth Avenue.
We?re declaring all New York cake and cupcake wars over with Big Booty taking the cake prize.
The cake we ordered was a luscious German Chocolate cake. It's a birthday tradition in our family to have this cake, but who has the time to bake it themselves? So suffice to say, we've sampled a lot of different bakers version of this one. It was the best we've ever had.
An entire made fresh to order Giant German Chocolate was only $30, which for New York prices is a huge bargain. They also sell single slices of all their cakes and many cupcake versions.
Other sublime offerings include coconut cake and Red Velvet, and Dulce de Leche cupcakes to die for.
The service and prices are also incredible. If you are like us and are tired of dry cupcakes with grease icing from those other places...try Big Booty...our cake was light, flavorful and moist with heavenly icing.
- Pros: Perfect home-style cupcakes, great service with a smile,
- Cons: I can't eat cake every day
Amazing food and outstanding service!!!

My boyfriends birthday is May 5 (Cinco de Mayo) so we decided to throw a Latin themed birthday party this year. Any of you who live in the city know how difficult it is to find a Latin bakery in Manhattan below 110 Street. I had read some things about Big Booty and decided to give them a call. I think that I spoke to everyone in that bakery at one point or another during the process. They were all so wonderful and accomodating, and willing to do whatever I needed. The result was an outstanding tres leches cake that we just finished this week. Amazing arepas; both sweet and savory and the most outrageous red velvet cupcakes anyone had ever tasted. If you live in New York and you are looking for a good bakery I could not recommend this place enough.
- Pros: The whole experience was perfect!!!
- Cons: None
cheap eats -- SO GOOD
by 1614 at Citysearch
doesn't look like much passing when passing by but appearance belies everything in this case. first "booty buns" will catch your eye -- substantial yet strangly tender breads (almost like portugese sweetbreads) filled with dulce de leche, nutella, guava, etc...and dusted in sugar. FABULOUS! then you spot a large assortment of other savory and sweet baked goods ( cheese rocks, insanely good fresh ground corn patty/fritter thing, scones, etc..). next come cakes so moist and rich looking it is sick. and just when you think there could be no more: you spy the sandwiches. oh my. the bread is fresh and thick cut. fillings fresh and tasty. all so cheap. all DIVINE.
- Pros: fabulous food, savory, sweet, cheap, friendly
A sweet Chelsea bakery with Latin flair and perfect buns.
by Katie Heffernan at Citysearch
The Scene
A sugary scent fills the air at this cute Latin bakery and sandwich shop. Baker's racks and a long glass counter tantalizingly display the array of pastries made fresh daily from family recipes. Though lines aren't long even at lunchtime, sandwiches take an extra minute as smiling servers prepare them with care, pulling fresh loaves straight from cooling shelves. The subtly funky rear sit-down section, displaying local art on the walls, holds a handful of tables.
The Draw
An overwhelming assortment of baked goodies--cakes, cookies, turnovers, cheese rolls--are mostly Latin-influenced. Signature booty buns, sweet bread muffins sugar-dusted and stuffed with creamy dulce de leche, fruit and other fillings, easily escalate from bite to binge. Warm, pressed paninis such as the grilled chicken with bacon, tomato and melted cheese are buttery-delicious. But not all choices build big booties--the smoked turkey and avocado sandwich on doughy whole wheat bread is full of fresh flavor.
