I didn't think I'd find good yoga in Midtown East. But when I was looking for somewhere to practice bright and early before work, I came across Yoga Effects. When they say vigorous vinyasa, they mean it. It's a good thing they have showers because you'll need them. Don't expect to chant or meditate. But do expect really sweet teachers who kick your butt with a smile. I appreciate the fact that there are actual levels unlike other studios who just do the "open level" thing which can mean if you're advanced, you might not be challenged, if you're a beginner, you might be lost. At Yoga Effects, if you go to an advanced class, believe me, it's advanced, and if you go to a beginner class, even though you will sweat, you will do so safely. The studio is very spacious, spartan, and very clean. The owner is professional, yet warm. This yoga center was a pleasant surprise and going there for an early-bird or lunch-time class makes working on the east side of midtown so much more bearable!
Pros: early morning express classes, lunchtime classes, showers, no dogma

This is not your typical yoga studio. Yoga Effects is amazing, friendly, and it makes you feel comfortable from the first class you take. It is a powerful vinyasa flow practice that is a great workout while still being fun and energetic. If you are new to yoga, or you don't like the "know-it-all" attitude of other studios, this would be a great change. I practiced here for two years before moving out of New York, and this studio made me love yoga. I HIGHLY recommend this place.
Pros: Everything
Cons: Nothing

Liz, the owner and head instructor at the studio is fantastic. She teaches wonderful classes that push you to the limits, while still following and assisting each of the students in the room. Yoga Effects has a great group of confidence-inspiring teachers that lead very well thought-out classes/routines that really educate and strengthen the students with careful, individual attention to newcomers and return students alike. It is really a breadth of fresh air in a community that oftentimes ignores newcomers to a studio. Great studio and great job Liz!!!
Pros: Individual attention to all; good workouts

I fell in love with yoga and vinyasa the day I walked into Yoga Effects over a year and a half ago. I have tried other studios and types of yoga but the combination of the friendly, encouraging atmosphere of this studio and the physical results I quickly saw had me addicted! Each instructor lends their own personal touch to each class and Liz, the owner is wonderful. Her love for yoga is obvious in and out of class. Yoga Effects has allowed me grow into an advanced practice because this studio offers something for every level.
Pros: friendly & encouraging enviornment
Cons: NONE

Get ready for a great work out at Yoga Effects… Friendly staff will welcome you as you walk in the door but do not be fooled once in class they will whip your butt into shape. I’m often asked how I get arms and a body like mine I just smile and say head over to 226 E 54th street and check out Yoga Effects. The best yoga studio in the NYC area and I’ve tried them all…..

The head of a Lawyer with the body of a Yogi Liz the owner pours her whole self into her studio. This place is amazing for type “A” personalities that love to sweat out the stress with out a lecture in spirituality. The staff is very friendly and treats everyone with out judgment. It is what Yoga should be… Concentrating on the physical benefits of the posses a great work out… stretching all those muscles you never use or over use. Even those of us who typically don’t work out you will find this place addictive!
Pros: Great work out see results in no time!

Yoga Effects offers the best classes I have ever experienced. Elizabeth is my favorite instructor. Nice clean environment, friendly people and enjoyable classes that challenge me. I don't know what I'd do without my yoga classes, they calm me down after a stressful day, helped me quit smoking, stop taking anti-depressants and toned up my body.
Pros: great staff, clean studios
Cons: kind of pricey, classes are packed to the gills

I've been doing yoga for approx. 1 year. At first, I tried a lot of different places, but over the last 8 months, I have practiced almost exclusively at Yoga Effects. I found their beginner classes very challenging and their instructors very attentive, specifically Ellen and Corey. The style is rigorous vinyasa. For me this is beneficial because I don't have a lot of natural flexibility, and I need to get warm before doing much in the way of stretching. I hate going into a class cold, doing one sun salutation, and then trying to do triangle. At Yoga Effects my practice has progressed toward the intermediate-advanced range, and the classes continue to push me to in my strength and flexibility. Elizabeth's and Tyler's intermediate and advanced classes always have a very good flow, a very good level of difficulty, and they provide crucially beneficial adjustments. Yoga Effects is a great yoga studio. I highly recommend it.
Pros: instructors, yoga style, space
Cons: i don't know of any

This studio is great for anyone looking for a caring, laid-back place to further his/her yoga practice. The studio is clean with excellent equipment meticulously maintained. For me, the staff and other students make this an ideal and comfortable environment. If you're looking for a scene, this isn't the place for you. The staff is caring and take the time to learn your name, correct yoga positions and present challenging classes that actually incorporate students' input. Other students at the studio are friendly and non-judgmental. The classes are challenging without pushing a philosophy or way of life. Most of the emphasis is on health, taking care of yourself and making better choices in your chosen lifestyle. I have been practicing regularly for nine months here and felt at home from the moment I walked in the door. I have encouraged several friends and colleagues to try to studio for the convenient class times, reasonable prices and friendly, knowledgeable instructors. I highly encourage anyone to come to a class here.
Pros: friendly staff, comfortable environment, challenging classes
