Not like on TV

by Valdivia

I went to the Soda Shop because of a show on cable. Being a native of Brooklyn, New York, sometimes I walk right past places of interest and I must admit, I was lured into the Soda Shop because of the aforementioned show. My Husband is the nostalgic type, so I thought this would be a nice stop during our travels. Upon entering the Soda Shop, my Husband asked, "So what beverages do you have?" The gentleman there, who apparently seemed annoyed, said, "There are the menus" and pointed to them. I quickly interjected and ordered a chocolate egg cream soda. What I was served looked like a glass of muddy water. For those of you who know, this drink is supposed to have a nice chocolatey bottom, a white frothy top, and a spot of chocolate syrup in the middle of the froth. Did you hear me? Froth! There wasn't even any froth! Where was my foam? After seeing that, my Husband bought some candy for the kids. This same "gentleman" returned his change by "tossing" it a good 6 inches onto the counter. He didn't hand to him (as he was directly in front), or lay it on the counter. At that, I calmly advised him of my displeasure. We were the only ones in the store!!! Needless to say, we are never going there again.

  • Pros: Just the Decor
  • Cons: Poor service

Underwhelmed

by TheRaptor

After seeing the Soda Shop on "Cool in Your Code", I was really excited about going. After visiting, I have to say... I was a little underwhelmed.

Pros

-Food was tasty

-Portions were okay

-Decor is great

-Bathroom was clean

Cons

-Restaurant is very small

-The waitress, though polite, got my boyfriend's order totally wrong. He was brought a breakfast burrito instead of a Philly Sandwhich (those don't even sound similar). He didn't send it back, but after seeing the other reviews, I kind of wish I'd looked at the bill again to make sure we weren't over charged... because it was kind of a high ticket for two people.

-I've definitely had better shakes in NYC (i.e. Juniors)

-THE MUSIC IS AWFUL and too loud. Seriously... owners... if you are reading this... top 40 in an old fashioned soda shop??? That's just silly.

  • Pros: Decor
  • Cons: Correct Order Execution

Love this place!

by pumpkinpaws

We went for lunch today and couldn't have been happier. One of us didn't want lunch food and ended up getting a piece of amazingly fresh coffee cake. My other friend got the perfectly cooked burger with crispy fries, and I got the hot and gooey mac & cheese. It was a great meal on a cold day, at a cute warm place. And of course we couldn't leave without one of us having a black and white shake, and other getting the brownie sundae. It was an indulgance for lunch, but well worth it. We can't wait to go back.

  • Pros: Delicious food and great service.
  • Cons: Can get crowded, go early.

Cute place. Basic food done a little better.

by bellakitty

The food is pretty basic but they seem to make an effort to make it better than your average diner. A good amount of food was on my place for a very reasonable price. The beverages seemed to be very high priced in comparision though. The "mini" cupcake for 75 cents was not worth it and it was very stale - deduct an additional 1/2 star for that. But, I would still go back when I need a quick and satisfying lunch.

What a New Yorker Needs After a Hard Day

by alexprada

What a Pleasure! After a hard December Day with all the maddness of the City During this season, I found this perfect quiet place with comfort food that lifts your spirit.

And the espresso was Fabulosso! It is just what I needed to keep me up writing Xmas Cards!

My Partner loved the Mac & Cheese and the Strawberry Ice Cream is a Killer! Did I mention the Espresso?

You can't miss this place that will take you back to your childhood and pamper you on any cold winter night!

  • Pros: Literally two steps away from the 2-3 Express Subway - Chambers St
  • Cons: A lot of Sugar for your body! <LOL> You wil want to try Everything!

A Boon to the Neighborhood

by shanir

There aren't a lot of inexpensive places to eat at in Tribeca and clearly it's meeting a need, given the steady stream of customers that came in last night over the course of several hours. The roast chicken, which many places botch, was was very moist and tasty, as were all the sides and the homemade chicken noodle soup. The egg creams and ice cream were also well made. My only complaint was with the staff, who in the owner's absence, were not terribly attentive.

  • Pros: The atmosphere of an old-fashioned soda shoppe and excellently-prepared food
  • Cons: Service

Cute decor, but you could do much better

by jland

I recently went to the Soda Shop expecting to get a really good fountain special with lunch. Unfortunately, I didn't. First of all they were EXTREMELY incompetent. A man sitting at the next table over got a grilled cheese instead of the sandwich that he ordered, I ordered Coke, but she thought I said coffee, she charged me the price of a burger when I ordered a grilled cheese, and I still didn't get back the correct amount of change. The portions were pretty small, and the ice cream could do a lot better. On the good side, they serve a good Root Beer from one of the lesser known companies, and they're egg cream is very good, still made from a genuine fountain. The best thing about them was they're large selection of old candies.

  • Pros: Very nice atmosphere, candy
  • Cons: Bad service, small portions, small menu

Great weeknight place

Terrific selections and wonderful food; a wonderful find. Sometimes very crowded, but if you get there early, the wait is never too long.

cute retro place

by sortmon

my friend had recommended the place for their ice cream concoctions so i was eager to try it out. i was a little disappointed to see that there wasnt much on their menu besides the normal stuff like sundaes & sodas. the place definitely has an old-fashioned soda shop vibe to it, with old childrens magazines & books on the shelves, as well as jars filled with penny candy. i had the coffee mocha ice cream soda ($3.75) which was basically like a chocolate egg cream with a scoop of coffee ice cream topped with whipped cream & a cherry. the ice cream wasnt very good as it had shards of ice in it, but the overall drink was ok. the place is pretty new and the waiter had no idea how to make our drinks (the manager had to teach him), but he was friendly and apologetic.

  • Pros: comfortable seating, cute decor, inexpensive
  • Cons: limited menu, very icy ice cream
