great bbq in koreatown

by oompanyc

Found this spot a few weeks ago and decided to give it a shot. Great Korean BBQ. A little pricey but not by NY City Standards. Plenty of food comes with the meal. Nice place.

  • Pros: great food and service in a cool neighborhood
  • Cons: pricey

This sleek, multi-level behemoth serves up Korean classics during all hours of the day.

by Keith Wagstaff

In Short
Small and homey, this place is not--three stories of sleek, barbecue-ready tables welcome diners 24 hours a day. The menu, like the restaurant, can almost be intimidating in its size, but almost everything is a winner. Meat items ranging from beef short ribs to slabs of bacon are available for a little D.I.Y. cooking in the middle of your table, while the entrees include classics like beef bi bom bob and tofu hot pots, plus more adventurous fare like beef intestine casserole and boiled eel.

Great BBQ!

by foodenthusiast84

The location of the restaurant is great because the neighborhood is notorious for its Korean BBQ restaurants and bars. Shilla is top on my list. I think they can improve on the service a little. The waitstaff is helpful and attentive, but the hosts/hostesses tend to be snooty sometimes. It's very busy on weekends, but you get seated promptly! If you order the pork, make sure it's cooked thoroughly, otherwise you'll end up with a stomach ache.

  • Pros: Good Food!
  • Cons: Crowded during the weekends.

Best BBQ in Ktown

by yeller07

I LOVE the food here. Since the last time I was here, the staff has gotten more attentive and nice and helpful. They painted the restaurant all different colors too. I never have complaints about the food here. The popular marinated beef is so delicious and just melts in your mouth. I come here often, and only once was it salty, but that won't stop me from ever coming back. The bibim bap (rice with mixed veggies) is awesome too. And OH! The soups, especially the bean curd soup and kimchi soup is to die for. I don't understand people complaining about the price because it's pretty much the same at every bbq restaurant on this block. It's definately cheaper (not by much) than the new place across the street. Plus, their portions are outrageous. I always have to pack food to go. I highly recommend this place to anyone who has never tried Korean food or want a favorite Korean restaurant to go to. I still don't understand the unisex bathroom, but hey, I'm not there to rate the men who I have to share the same sink with. Cheers!

  • Pros: Nice modern decor with improved waitstaff service
  • Cons: Unisex bathroom

awesome bbq

by nyustudent11

The food was great, with generous portions and a pretty good selection of side dishes. The place was full but service was decent and overall we had a very enjoyable meal. My only complaint is the price.

  • Pros: great food
  • Cons: pricey

GReat BBQ!!!

by zazahouse

I've read these other reviews before I decided to dine at Shilla. Majority said the food was great, so I had to go check it out for myself. I was shocked by the portions and the side dishes that came out. It was amazing. I asked around and the restaurant is still fairly new, so the reviews from last year or previous to that should be discarded by new readers. I myself ran a few restaurants before and it is one of the hardest jobs out there in the world. New restaurants never start out to be top notch. They will always have flaws... the wrong staff, the wrong kitchen staff, the wrong manager, etc. But this place was outstanding, coming from someone with experience. Not only was the service great, but the manager was present the whole time. She made sure every table was taken care of. I highly recommend Shilla to everyone, but you might want to fill up your wallet before you head out here. It is a little pricy, but it is worth every penny!!!!

  • Pros: Great decor (especially the 3rd FL), great food, great service, good looking young staff, prompt seating
  • Cons: Pricy$$$, 15 minute wait on weekends

Decent food, but nothing exceptional.

by moneygrubber

The food was good, but in Flushing NY there are many better representations of Korean food. For manhatten, however, I am sure that this isn't bad at all.

  • Pros: Easy location.

Good Korean BBQ.

by britel

I was recommended by my Korean friend to visit this place in K-town. I'm glad that I did. The food was good and the service matched. We had the chun gyup ssal (pork) bbq and the mushrooms. We then washed it down with a bottle of soju. I'm not sure how Shilla compares to other bbq's in NYC, but it compares favorably to places in Philly and Washington DC.

Clean, Friendly Korean Restaurant

by alleycatnewyork

I have been going to Shilla since last year. The staff is very freindly especially John -who is my favorite server. The place is very clean with a decor (which is very rare for a korean restaurant). The service is fast, prompt. The food is good - better than any other K. Reastaurants in K. Town.

  • Pros: Large Seating
  • Cons: Long waiting list on Fridays

Taste awful!!! Rude staffs!!!

by clarapaek

I took my co-workers there and was the only Korean. Wanted to introduce Korean foods to them.

We ordered Kalbi, Shrimp barbeque, Japchae (Clear noodle), Spicy squid, Mandoo (dumpling), etc.

The quality of Kalbi was not good, Clear noodle was not tasty and too sticky because cooked a while ago.

Spicy squid was only spicy and too saulty. Ban-chan (side dishes) was disappointing.

When we were done, they brought us check and came to our table every two seconds to see if we paid yet.

Especially the guy with suits and earpiece on the 3rd floor was soooooo rude. He basically kicked us out.

I was so embarassed in front of my co-workers. He said there were people lining up downstairs waiting to be seated. But there were no people when we went downstairs. Cannot forget the look he shot at us.

I will never go back there. I heard their business is down hill. Now I understand why.

Very disappointing!!!!!!
