Good place, Used to have comedy

Used to have a comedy night on Tuesday hosted by David The Voice Stein. Real funny guy. Sadly that show is no longer happening but it is still a cool place to go.
Everything Was Stolen
by nyc5 at Citysearch
I went there on saturday and both me and my friends purses were stolen. Someone found my friends stuff around the area and returned it..my stuff is still gone. I looked around the area to see if they dumped my stuff by hers, and instead, I found someone else's purse! (I returned it to the precinct because it had no ID in it) Clearly, this happens a lot at this place. My friends wallet was stolen from there the night before. The management doesn't care so if you go there, don't put your stuff down!

Came here for a party with a big group of friends. They were totally unprepared to handle a group of our size, despite the fact that we had arranged the party weeks in advance. Bartender was intentionally as slow as possible and it took forever to get a drink, and the drinks he poured were super weak. All of this should probably be expected from a night out on the LES, but to make matters worse, several people in our party had things stolen (purse with cell phone, wallet, etc., coats, etc.). The bouncers were completely unhelpful and didn't seem to care much. Since then, I have heard that these kinds of thefts are not uncommon and occur pretty regularly at Fat Baby, so I would not be surprised if it's something the management/bouncers know about and turn a blind eye to. Other than us, the crowd was pretty cheesy - B&T/outer-borough/corporate wankers in button-downs with too much hair gel and cologne. AVOID Fat Baby at all cost.
- Pros: None
- Cons: Theft
Avoid at all costs

This place is way to crowded if you want to dance, the bartenders take at least 10 min to get you adrink, even when I was paying it took 20 min to get my bill adn change, but the worst thing is that someone is stealing stuff in that bar, a bunch of people had a party down there and lost a bunch of purses and phones, some of the stuff turned up in the trash can with no money or valuables in it, this is not the first time this has happened and some other people have told me of similar experiences.
The place could be amazing, but it's not.
- Pros: Nice music
- Cons: Stealing, Expensive, Bad service
NEVER going again

I booked my sister's birthday party here after I heard from a friend that she'd been to some fun parties there and the people didn't even need to get a bottle. However, when I e-mailed someone about a reservation, a bottle was required for the table... it wasn't too expensive for NYC standards ($225, including gratuity), so we went ahead with it figuring that they would treat us and all of our friends well if we shelled out some money. Needless to say, that wasn't the case.
First, they gave my boyfriend a hard time about going in, b/c "he wasn't wearing a collared shirt," after the bouncer had just let a line of people in front of him in who were in north faces and t-shirts under them.
Then, this security guard on a power trip hassled us the whole time we were there!! He screamed in my face b/c I said I didn't want to check my coat, and threatened to kick my friend out when he told the bouncer not to speak to a girl like that. I was APALLED!!
The final straw was when this bouncer hassled my friend, who is undergoing chemotherapy for cancer, because he was having trouble staying up. I get that he had to leave, but the bouncer treated him awfully, pushing him out the door, even after we told him what was wrong! Then when I finally insisted on speaking to a manager about all that was going on, the manager simply said he believes his staff over me, and I should basically leave if I had a problem with it.
So if you don't feel like reading my entire story up there, just read this : DO NOT GO TO FAT BABY, especially for an event that you want to be special, like a birthday. Plus - WAY too crowded.
- Pros: None
- Cons: Crowded, rude security, rude manager
Good for parties
by Katy10007 at Citysearch
I had a birthday party here this past weekend- reserved some tables upstairs on the mezzanine by the DJ. There was a one bottle/table minimum, bottles about $200/each.... not a bad price for the neighborhood.
It was great being upstairs because the downstairs gets so crowded it can start to look like a frat party. The music was awesome and the ambiance is a blast. The place overall is a nice mix of not too old, not too young, not B&T, sort of hip but not weird.
Our guests were able to skip the line (well, most of the them- the bouncer was a little pissy/confused by the end of the night and made some guests stand outside for a while). Skipping the line is important- If you have to wait in line, it can take up to a half hour to get in after midnight.
Biggest negative was the waitress. The service wasn't very good- we had to hunt down the waitress to get our mixers and ran out of ice multiple times. She pretty much tossed down the bottles, took our money, and never came back. Given we paid a 25% service charge, I don't think it was crazy to expect to be checked in on at least once or twice.
Overall, it was a great time though and I'd go back- I'd just make sure to get some better service or refuse to pay such a high tip/ service.
- Pros: music, location, atomosphere, crowd
- Cons: service, bouncer's ability to remember what parties are upstairs
The LES experience, par excellence
by TevyeMicardi at Citysearch
I just had my girlfriend's 25th birthday party at Fat Bay and it was freaking fantastic. We were going to have it someplace else but decided to cancel there after my girlfriend visited this place and couldn't stop raving about it. Yes, there was a line to get in, which I'm told is fairly standard for weekend nights. But we had a reservation - got three tables on the floating mezzanine, which overlooks the entire first floor of the bar, right next to the dj booth, so we were able to make "requests" all night. Plus there was cocktail waitress and - for the LES - pretty good service the whole night. We didn't have to pay anything for the reservation, no table minimum, (though we did end up buying three bottle of Goose, anyway.)
Pros: awesome music, great service, cheap prices.
Cons: crowded, line to get in.
- Pros: Good service, awesome music and ambience, great place for parties
- Cons: Crowded, wait to get in
Unprofessional. Horrible. Bands Beware.

The user below who recommended that bands don't play here was right on. I traveled up from Baltimore to see a friend's band play and it was utter chaos. Apparently, the group showed up at the gig only to find out that the club planned on canceling the show...no advance notice, nothing! The guitarist had a shit-fit, and the club begrudgingly "allowed" them to play, using the same "private party" b.s. they used below -- which apparently prompted all the over groups to cancel.
If this weren't enough, the sound system was laughable (two 1-15 JBLS for mains????) and it appeared one of them blew up during the show (the lead singer, from the stage, noted that it smelled like something was burning.) The doorman was charging people anywhere from $7 - $10, apparently on a whim, and the Security guards were neanderthal, at best. All this for a band who basically sold out the entire basement room of the club! Who treats bands this way?
Anyway, I 've seen this band numerous times at The Annex and -- for live music -- THAT is the best small-to-midsize club in the LES. Great sound, staff, soundguy, REAL soundsystem. Fat Baby might've been a decent rock club back in the day, but that day is long past.
Bands: beware.
- Pros: None
- Cons: All
Faustian Deal

I do not recommend this venue. Though the short lines outside make the bar appealing from the outside, once you enter this dank cavern, you realize why... The space is not only unaccommodating, but it's trivial and boring. However, I was meeting friends there, so we decided to grab a drink before we left. The bartenders refused to serve new patrons and told us they would only serve "friends first". And everyone else waited helplessly at the bar to get drinks. I didn't realize bars made money by putting business on hold and handpicking who they wanted money from.
There are tons of bars on that street. Trust me. Find another one...
