Jay doesn't pay his workers

by louisglass

I worked for Vino Vino over a year. I wrote a very fair review of the place under my reviewer name, Louis Glass, back in January. It was a fair assessment of the place in the same way my other reviews are fair.

And what am I to do? A month ago the owner, Jay Donayre, started giving me my tips check and they kept bouncing.

When I sought to rectify the situation in time for my August rent and health insurance checks to go through, he left me hanging, ignored, worse then snubbed.

To this day (with September rent and health insurance checks about to be sent out) he still owes me nearly a thousand dollars. He keeps ignoring me. Or he'll respond to a text message that surely the money will be ready as soon as another payment clears.

I saw him do this to wine vendors and other small businesses throughout my year working for him. I never thought he'd do it to me.

  • Pros: nice enough wine
  • Cons: not nice enough for the price

Vino Vino is a winner!

by mackerelmorcilla

I've only been here a few times, but this place is, amongst other things, very reliable. It is a long, spacious establishment with a wine store inside, divided from the bar area with glass. There are comfortable leather couches - it's good for a date and for groups.

The wine selection is large; I don't recall what I had in the first times I went, but this time I had a German red which was surprisingly sweet and not tart.

This is a mature, classy wine bar. It's a far cry from the crowded, loud lounges elsewhere downtown. You will often seen customers in their 50s and 60s here quietly enjoying their wine selections and salumi platters (one of which I ordered in a previous visit and was very good).

My only concern was that it was quite empty on a Saturday night... there were 3 sets of customers including us and when we left at 11, there was nobody coming in. I hope this was just an off night, I would not want Vino Vino to close!

Extremely pleasant, comfortable atmosphere... GREAT for good conversation w/ wine. A must visit in lower Manhattan!

  • Pros: atmosphere, lots of space, great for conversation, good for dates and groups
  • Cons: can't think of one

Great Service :)

by smurf1264

We went to VinoVino to start the night for a bachelorette party since our bride to be loves wine. Melissa (our sommlier) was so helpful and great to work with. We had a deal to have seven wines and when we got there she had made it nine with no extra cost. She answered our questions, provided delicious wines, and amazing cured meats/cheeses where the plates were always being refilled. I would definitly recommend this place for a night out.

great for a party

by srv30

I recently organized a party here for a friend's birthday and it was a great experience. The in house contact in charge of organizing events was extremely helpful and accommodating. She worked with what we wanted to pay and created a great menu. Upon my early arrival, everything was ready to go and set up very nicely, there was more than enough space for our group. The staff was friendly and everything went very smoothly. The wines and horderves were perfect. I definitely recomend this location for a small event and would plan another party there again.

  • Pros: great service, great wines

that place you've always been looking for

by ferbox

i have to say, vino vino has the perfect balance and has become my favorite wine bar in the city. its minimal but not austere, its relaxing but not sleepy, its hip but not annoying. they have an amazing selection of wine that you can't get just anywhere and the price range meets all pocket books and that doesn't mean the cheap ones taste cheap, at all! the staff has always been really friendly each time i've been and really helpful, no pretensious sommeliers. they also have micro brews available too for the guys who just can't drink wine. anyhow, i highly reccomend it for a romantic night out, a girls night vino splurge or a group fest. it's also a great stop for lets say an afternoon prosecco. oh, and they have food too! seriously some of the best cheese and pate i've ever had. lastly, forgot to say that their pours are full and while at another wine bar downtown i got slightly larger portions on my meat and cheese plate it was considerably worse and not worth it.

  • Pros: wine list, the tapas, and the ambience
  • Cons: not open super late

little bar - global reputation

by alexandriashaner

I can sum up VinoVino in one story:

I recently spent the year in Cairo, where I had a Mexican American flatmate from DC. We were discussing New York hangouts, bars, etc and I mentioned that I loved this little winebar in Tribeca and that the owners were such great people. As I described the place she said, "VinoVino?? That place is my favorite!" She said it was so fun and trendy yet it was also her favorite place to buy nice artisanal wines because they were the only place that offered fair prices and had such selection. VinoVino is only a few years old yet , from the Pyramids to Manhatten, NYC lovers worldwide are already singing its praises.

  • Pros: trendy yet warm, good prices, good service
  • Cons: there isnt a VinoVino in DC

Great place to meet friends, taste and buy wines

by buzzyr

Great place to sit down and taste unusual wines. Great variety by the glass and easy to go next door and buy what you tasted. The staff is extremely helpful, friendly and knowledgeable. Great neighborhood. Interior is sleek, but comfortable. I've recommended this place to friends and family.

  • Pros: Great location, easy to purchase wines tasted
  • Cons: none I can think of
