What users are saying:
east village gem, extensive craft beer list!
by CSMobileUser at Citysearch
we went to grape and grain expecting to have wine. We asked about the sister bar against the grain and the bartender showed an extensive (to say the least) list of eclectic local and import, draft and bottled craft beers (had to be more than 50). They offered to walk over and snag something from the beer menu, which we did. Good to know you can get great wine, amazing craft beer and delicious small plates in the neighborhood without all the east village fuss. We will be back! (P.s. We poked our heads into against the grain before heading home, smaller but very inviting!)
A great night out.

I went to Grape and Grain this weekend with my wife. She had been there before with a few of her frineds and raved about it. I was pleasantly surprised. The restaurant has an intimate atmosphere and freindly service. I thought the menu was interesting. I had the ribs. My wife had the artichoke pizza. They were both delicious. As my wife is the wine person, she orderd us a nice bottle of red (I can't remember which one). It was really good. We were not rushed out at all, and afterward, decided to check out the bar they have next door. As this is primarily a beer joint, I was in my element. I was surprised that they had Scaldis, which is one of my favorites, and not generally found everywhere. Overall, it was a great time and priced reasonably. I will definitely repeat.
- Pros: Good beer list, reasonably priced
- Cons: a bit of a long walk from the subway
birthday reservation
by euterpe291 at Citysearch
I recently had my birthday party here- my boyfriend set it up but he said the guy he spoke to was super friendly on the phone. We reserved a table in their next door bar, Against the Grain and it was great for a medium sized group. We ordered a bunch of plates for the table and a few bottles of wine ( a really delicious pettite syrah was in the mix). They had some really good beers on draught and we had a really interesting one in a green can. that our server recommended. Overall it was a nice low key night.
- Pros: good for groups or a date
- Cons: place is on the smaller side
holiday party
by grmttribeca at Citysearch
I recently went here for my office holiday party. We had some interesting spanish wines, cheese and these tasty chorizo puff pastry appetizers which I am still thinking about. Overall a very good time was had by all.
- Pros: good wine, tasty chorizo app
- Cons: a little far east from the subway
Great Wine and Tapas, horrible service
by dabella at Citysearch
I had to try this cute little wine/tapas bar. The atmosphere is very inviting with the wood banquettes and nice wrap around bar with open windows. I would recommend the meatballs, they were excellent and they had multiple bottles of good wine around $35.
However, the only bad part of the night was the service...it was terrible. I mean almost "ignored" terrible. Which surprised me because it didn't even seem packed. The waitress/bartender looked like we were annoying her to order a second bottle of wine, to order food etc. I even had to walk up to the bar to get the check. If it's so busy and popular there should have been another person waiting on the tables. It was also bizzare she mentioned she had to go next door to get beer, perhaps the management/ownership should think of a better method. It would be a wonderful place if not for the dissapointing service.
- Pros: tapas, wine, atmosphere
- Cons: service, service, service
Fabulous BDay!!
by sharabella at Citysearch
I had my party the other night and it was SO special! The servers Bridget and Jess made sure everyone was happy and taken care of. The wine and beer were fabulous as was ALL the food. The perfect place for a party!
Delicious appetizers and fantastic atmosphere. Very intimate, yet super fun. All my friends had an amazing time. A very 'neighborhood' place that hasn't been infiltrated by the college kids. It's a grown up, classy, fun, yummy time. I'm going back again and again.
- Pros: Food, Wine, Beer
- Cons: NONE
Great atmosphere, fantastic wine
by khrisandkaty at Citysearch
we stopped by a "best of NYC" wine bar at 12am on a Friday night, only to find it closed. They recommened Grape and Grain. Jessy was friendly and her recommendations were spot on, very knowledgable! We will definately return!
- Pros: great atmosphere, romantic, informative friendly staff
Worth the trip east
by krystyna03 at Citysearch
The mood is romantic - especially if you are lucky to get a table in the dark corners that seem to be everywhere. The staff is very friendly and patient - pairing wine and cheese platters for people who have no idea what they like. The paninis are good and the meatball pizza is worth the trip alone. A great place to start an East Village night. Plus, the beer bar they operate next door is worth a stop too.
- Pros: Service, atmosphere, old world wine list
- Cons: on the small side so you may eat at the bar
Friendly staff, great food and wine
by alphabetcity at Citysearch
I love this cozy neighborhood bar/restaurant, and was disappointed to see the two users' negative comments regarding a recent visit to Grape & Grain (during which one of them slipped and fell). Their experience very much contradicts the many warm receptions I've received there, which makes me wonder if these two users are projecting some low-self-worth issues onto the Grape & Grain staff. The brothers who run the establishment always greet us with bright smiles and conversation. Moreover, the staff member who buys the wine has selected some excellent, well-balanced bargains (i.e., price points averaging from $30 to $35) for every palette. In addition, Grape & Grain offers a limited menu of food--small tapas-like dishes with flavors that highlight most bottles on the list. I'm a fan of truffle oil (drizzled on the pizza and meatballs), and its scent often fills the air there. I've worked in the restaurant industry for years, and finding great food and wine at reasonable prices is difficult to come by in New York City these days. So I really appreciate having Grape & Grain in the neighborhood.
- Pros: Well-balanced wine at reasonable prices, friendly staff, good food
- Cons: None
Brotherly Love...
by effenbfreak at Citysearch
while I know this is not a forum for back and forth arguments I feeel this is due in regard to the two bad comments previously posted. This place is great and the brothers that run the joint are awsome. I think that these reviewers should choose better battles and shoes to wear in inclement weather and be more conscious of their personal space in a small environments. They sound obnoxious, stuck up and only concerned with themselves and their own agenda. Some people in this world do not have a clue how to react to situations other than to bash someone else for the taking ownership for their own actions.
I WILL CONTINUE to go here and am HAPPY that these people ( and hopefully others like them ) will stay far away from this cozy, quaint, relaxing place.
- Pros: quaint, cozy, the bros that own the joint
- Cons: false reviews
