Great food, friendly service

by NewYorking at Citysearch

My friends took me to this place and the food was awesome. Delicious, yummy sauces, tasty dessert, good margaritas, and very friendly service - what more can you ask for? I usually frequent Rosa Mexicano which is very close to where I live, and while Mexicana Mama has less variety and is smaller, the food and service are fabulous. And the wait time is not that long. I highly recommend this place and will go there again.

good food, but claustrophopic seating

by zottington at Citysearch

The food here is not bad, but they charge you for chips and salsa (unheard of where I come from)! The whole dining experience would be greatly improved by removing a couple of tables. Do they really need to pack us in like sardines, just to make a few extra bucks? We will never go back.

  • Pros: freindly service, decent food
  • Cons: too crowded, expensive

Unbelievable rudeness from the manager, will NEVER go back

by cmaigret at Citysearch

On Friday January 2nd around 7:15pm my husband, my brother and I showed up at the restaurant and were told that the wait would be 25 minutes. We put our name down for 3 people.

15 or 20 minutes later, I came back to check on our reservation. There was a couple in front of me who were told that there would be a 5 or 10 minute wait for a table for 2. When the hostess saw me she said the table would be ready in 5 minutes. I said Great!

Two side by side tables for 2 were being freed near the door by the hostess station. After the tables were cleared the hostess pulled a chair from the entrance area and said that she was going to accomodate the 3 of us on one of the tables (for 2) and was going to give the other table to the couple who had arrived 5 minutes before. She was clearly embarrassed to have to say that and she said that her manager wanted to do it this way so that they could have 5 diners in a space made for 4.

Now my husband and my brother are both over 6 ft 2 so there was no way we could squeeze the 3 of us in the space. So we asked to see the manager. She came and defended her point. Take it or leave it. I stressed that we lived here and were no touris, that we'd come to the restaurant regularly, that she could not treat us this way but to no avail. We left, disgusted, and will never go back.

Frankly, the food is not the greatest at this place, they don't accept credit cards, and this is no way to treat paying customers.

  • Cons: Overpriced and rude

If You Like This, You Don't Know Mexican Food And Enjoy Paying Too Much Money

by tastesmythe at Citysearch

Truly mediocre in every way. The only thing that was good about our meal was the tequila, which they did not make.

$18 fish tacos are a joke. This is Mexican food for people who just don't know better.

I am from Texas and lived for 9 years in California.

This restaurant wouldn't stay open in either of those two states.

crowded but delicious

by yankeefan1981 at Citysearch

you can't get in there on a Friday lunch time with the queues out the door. I don't think it was ever meant to be an evening destination, but it is perfect for picking up something on the way home from work! The portions are great, and the food is always tasty. Its all made before your eyes and served extremely quickly - in fact, in less time than many other so called "fast food" places. I for one hope it goes from strength to strength.

  • Pros: food is great
  • Cons: you can never find a seat

Wonderful new find

by Barbara2348 at Citysearch

I found this place walking around and decided to go in. I loved it so much. The ambiance was so pleasant. The restaurant itself is so pretty to look at, great decor. As for the food, it was so fresh and delicious. The sangria was unbelievable too. If you go get the enchiladas, you won't regret it.

  • Pros: Great decor and food

Incredible service, best Mexican food in Manhattan

by Jord513 at Citysearch

I just took a client of mine to Mexicana Mama. She had never been there before, and I recommended it for good Mexican food, great atmosphere and impeccable service. We shared the queso flameado to start - A perfect combination of cheese and sausage. I had the pork tacos, and she had the enchilada suiza. The food was unbelievable, and no explanation I can write here will do it justice, --- The more important thing to mention is that this is the kind of place where not only is the service well-paced, but the employees are happy to be there and take the time to make good recommendations. Definitely check it out.

awesome mexican!

by Lee3377 at Citysearch

Decided to go check this place out the other night. Was blown away...awesome flavored margaritas, the salsa was like none I've ever had before. The burritos we different too so good, they had butternut squash in them! My friend got the enchiladas which were so good. Our service was great...attentive and polite. Will be returning soon.

  • Pros: great margs, salsa food and service
  • Cons: none so far

Average, not authentic mexican

by evillagefoodie at Citysearch

I was a bit disappointed after all the hype around this place.. the place was indeed packed and that made the service slow and a bit rude. My server forgot to bring out our quesadilla appetizer and did not even offer to resend it or any other consolation. Additionally our server was rude when we ordered a pitcher of sangria snapping at us "We only serve drinks by the glass"

The nachos were OK and came with a house special mole salsa which was delicious but before you knew it the small portion of $4.50 nachos was all gone (and of course no free refills even if you have more salsa remaining).

The enchilada was very gooey and not entirely flavourful.. it was drenched in cheese and for a lot less money in the same neighborhood could get a much better enchilada.

The chicken mole burrito was also a bit soggy and nothing special, again for that price could get a much better more authentic burrito around the corner.

The dessert was very good, however. We had the chocolate cake of tres leches which was delicious.

  • Pros: Good energy, fun ambience
  • Cons: pricey, sub-par service, average food
