Great menu selection, but pass on the sushi

by irocnyc

I really like the atmosphere of this place albeit unoriginal. Its a great place for a birthday or special event, especially the tables along the far back wall, where your feet dangle below seemingly into the water. The menu has lots of great choices, some great curries if you are into that, and nice fish dishes and good apps. I would definitely steer clear of the sushi here. Im a sushi purist, and they add random things to the sushi that actually take away from the taste. In addition, it was so fishy (the tuna) that I could not even eat it. Totally not worth it, and its pricey too. But aside from that, if you have a reservation, which is essential, they accomodate you very well up front, and the service was pretty good too. The bar couldnt get the drinks fast enough or accurate enough for our group, but we got them eventually. The wine list is ridiculously overpriced. A bottle of Benton Lane Pinot Noir (mediocre at best) goes for $95 at BB, but you can snap it up for $21 anywhere in the city. Get real! Dont expect perfection, and you will enjoy!

  • Pros: Fun cool place, good apps and entrees
  • Cons: fishy sushi, pricey, slow bar

HORRIBLE EXPERIENCE ON MY BIRTHDAY WORTHLESS

HORRIBLE EXPERIENCE ON MY BIRTHDAY WORTHLESS

Hi everyone I am new to comments but this one I have to share!!!!!!

If you ever decide to give a try on this horrible place RETHINK twice before. My friends made a reservation at this place for my birthday. The problem start when we arrived and the guy at the door made us wait for over 20 minutes before letting us going in!!! He blame that we did not have a reservation , so by the time we wore able to get inside I decided to Speak to the waitress about the issued . She was able to find as on the system in 2 seconds!!!!! At the table toke another 50 minutes to take the dinner order. Maybe an hour after they serve us the drink .Drinks???? Forget about it .... Then I finally decide to go over to speak to the waitress again and see if they could bring a list the drinks. He comes to me like WHAT DID YOU ORDER HONEY? (WITH HE'S SARCASTIC ATTITUDE). I said Sorry SR. I order drinks, appetizers and dinner about 1 hour a go and nothing has come in yet, could you please bring the drinks so we can get started???? He had the nervous to say that the house was full and the kitchen was about to close and he wasn't sure what was going on...... and he left us. Then 10 minutes latter appetizer's dinner and drinks wore all ate the table but not for everyone. Some of my friend's dinner did not come. So wore waiting again for the rest of the food to arrive and......... No food!!! We decide to speak to the waitress again and find out what is going on with this horrible place he said this I WILL BE RIGHT BACK WITH YOU GUYS!! And did not only come back, but also bring the check with him and NO FOOD for the rest of the us!!!! I was IN SHOCK, I was shaking, and I wanted to cry on my birthday I was treated like a SH...

Me as birthday girl went to talk to the manager who also seems to didn't care about the situation because the only thing he had to say was: you want a discount right? I will take care of your bill sweetie.... I said don't get me wrong But this is not what I want!!!! I WANT THE FOOD AND DRINKS I ORDED AND I SAID: HOW MUCH YOU WANT TO BRING THE FOOD OVER TO MY TABLE????? . I Don't CARE ABOUT DISCOUNT!!!!!!!! HE HAD THE BALLS TO SAY "I LIKE YOU HONEY AND HE JUMP, SMILE TO ME AND HUG ME"!!!! Seriously I think he was HIGH!!!!

HE DID NOT BRING THE FOOD ANYWAY and we had to pay for the food that we did not eat and they included the TIP on the tab. we all pay cash because we refused to leave the tip for such a horrible service, and disrespectful treatment. When we wore getting ready to leave the waitress come in and said we owned the rest of the check which was the TIPS!!!!

I said we are NOT going to Tip you because service was terrible and you guys don't deserve it!!! Tip usually is giving when GOOD service is Provided, Followed to good food and excellent costumer service

None of these was provided. He called the security and they said we wore not going leave the place unless we pay the TIPS!!!!!I couldn't believe in what I was listen from this people!!!!!!!! We had a huge argument and nothing was done and we had to give 20% GRATUITY for been miss treated at the Now called AJNA BAR well KNOW as BUDDHA BAR

DO NOT GO HERE EVER ! UNLESS IF YOU LIKE TO BE TREATED LIKE GARBAGE AND

BE CHARGE FOR A BAD SERVICE!!!!!!

standard fare

by londonerInNY

3 girls queueing at around 2.30am last pit stop on sat night out. Once past the bouncer the clipboard carrying lady still feels the need to ask if we are on the "list". We replied no and she still let us in!?

Anyway once inside the decor is nice, it was half empty so not sure why they were turning customers away outside. Much of the crowd was tired looking, especially the ones that took table service, why would you pay to be miserable. Couple of redeeming points is that there was no cover charge, no queue for the bar and the music was fairly good.

I NEVER LIKED THIS PLACE SINCE THE FIRST TIME THEY OPENED AS BUDDHA BAR. FOOD IS HORRIBLE. DRINKS ARE NOTHING SPECIAL, OVER PRICED. BUT PEOPLE AT THE DOOR??? SUCH A POWER TRIP. ALL OF THEM ARE REALLY UGLY AND RUDE. THEY HAVE TO STOP THIS FACE CONTROL CRAP.YOU HAVE TO PAY ME TO GO THERE AND I STILL WON'T. LAST NIGHT HAD TO MEET MY FRIEND THERE, UNFORTUNATELY PLACE WAS DEAD. HOPE THEY WILL CLOSE SOON. BUDDHA IS GONE THEY SHOULD FOLLOW.

Knocked it out of the park!

by stew2you

Last night I took my staff and a few key clients out for annual our holiday dinner. Upon entering Ajna, you start by walking through a "tunnel" like entrance that transforms you to a very-hip version of the Forbidden City (except with great food and booze). The space itself is huge, yet you feel very much at home. The decor is beautiful, somewhere between of "The king and I" and Jimmy Choo (if only they were that cool). We were a large group and the staff accommodated us with ease. Everyone at Ajna worked very hard to ensure our table was well fed and well-watered. For dinner, we had a little bit of everything; mouth watering salmon, delicious chicken and everyone at our table was raved about the steak. We had sushi, spring rolls, vegetable fried rice and bok choy. You name it, it all tasted great! To top the evening off, we finished with a sampler of chocolate pastries and torts that can only be described as superb. Would I go there again, definitely! Would I recommend this restaurant -- absolutely!

Worst service in a long time

by RichardJ10028

The food and decor are nice but the service spoiled it. After a much too long wait for our main courses we asked for the check. We were only able to leave 45 minutes later. The staff was unpleasant and clearly not interested in trying to provide a reasonable minimal level of service.

HORRIBLE! WORST DOORMEN/BOUNCERS EVER

by soommen

AVOID AT ALL COSTS. Ajna has by far the WORST bouncers/doorman in all of NYC. We had a deal, setup through a promoter, for 30-40 ppl, buy 2 bottles, get one free. When we got to the door, the piece of s-it bouncers/doorman said only the 9 people standing in front would get in and that everyone else would not be able to enter. Are you f-cking kidding me? We ended up not going in and cursing out the power trippin bouncers. They ruined my gfs 25th birthday party. PLEASE AVOID THIS PLACE. I hope whoever was at the door on Fri, Nov 5 around 1130 are reading this because all i want to tell this F-CK U

Don't go here for dinners or parties.

by Noble1

We celebrated my wife's birthday at Ajna Bar. It was a BAD call. The setting was nice, the food was excellent, and all of my guests enjoyed themselves, except they did not like the staff. We went there on a weeknight and there was a nice appropriate crowd in the lounge area.

BUT the wait staff was annoying as hell and they kept rushing our meal. It was a party and we had to order multiple bottles of wine. Therefore we didn't order the 6 bottle of their least expensive wines. After the 2nd bottle, they told us they ran out.

They kept interrupting to ask us to order more wine. We did. Later they brought 3 more bottles of the same wine we originally ordered but this was after we ordered several more of their expensive bottles. They didn't offer any apology or reason for their screw-up. They also didn't say anything like "Thank-you for coming" when we paid. They were pretty much asses about the whole thing. I will not go back.

  • Pros: Nice Restaurant AND Lounge - courteous staff
  • Cons: None
