Okay but not worth the money

Had dinner at Megu tonight. I had heard great things about the restaurant, but in general my expectations were way above what this restaurant deserves. The staff was definitely nice, but I didnt feel that they were attentive-they forgot items, looked confused as to who got what dish...etc. The food was nothing to rave about however, the one thing that stood out was the kobe beef. The sushi tasted like the 4 dollor rolls you can get at any sushi restaurant. Basically i would not go back unless it was free.

• Pros: Kobe beef was great, staff is nice, good dessert
• Cons: sushi was average (like from a local sushi restaurant)

Bad service, mediocre food at best

First of all this place is just badly designed. When we arrived, we were directed to the tiny lounge which had only 2 tables 2 flights of stairs up and then had to come back down to the dining area when our table was ready - what IS that!! Then the service was just plain bad. First they forgot our sake, they never filled up our glasses of water I felt like I had to remind them all the time. When the waiter brought our plates, they didn't know who ordered what. The rice bowls were just put in the middle of the table for us to grab. These people are just not attentive enough. I don't expect great service in my local chinese restaurant, but this is Megu. And of course, the food is just so-so, I can get much better kobe beef in a lot of other places not as "high end" as this place. This is just a one-star restaurant.

Delicious Kobe Beef Burgers & Sushi in Midtown!

I was hesitant to travel to 1st Ave. for a quick corporate lunch- afraid that I wouldn't make it back within the hour, but Megu Midtown proved me wrong. Their pre-fixe lunch was cost-effective and fast. I managed to meet with my clients, have a super lunch and head back to work without feeling like I missed too much of my work day. And I made a much better impression than if I had told them to meet me at the convenient corner deli. I'm eager to head back for a more leisurely dinner.

• Pros: Great Service. Speedy Lunch!
• Cons: So what if it's a little far east?

pricey, but filling

I would have to agree that the Megu in Midtown is very different that downtown. Its much smaller than the other one but has same excellent quality food. The host was very nice and sat us promtly, once seated we did wait a few minutes for the waiter. Some of my favorite dishes were the crispy shrimp w/ kanzuri cream(outstanding); kobe beef croquettes( a little too salty), and the yellowtail carpaccio. Dessert was definitely the star of the night for us, we ordered the sweet five (a sampler), which included the best tasting little Yuzu chocolates, super rich and melt in-your-mouth goodenss. Service could have been a little faster in my opinion but overall we enjoyed the night. It was little on the expensive side but we still didn't leave hungry. I initially went in for restaurant week, but wanted to be adventurous and was pleasantly surprised.

WHAT A WASTE OF A BEAUTIFUL SPACE

I recently visited this Venue for V-day and it was Horrible.. first off, the service was TERRIBLE, They had us just sitting there twiddling our thumbs. Second they didnt even take our drink order for almost a half hour after we sat down. there was no bread at the table or anything. Third, we had the Pre fix Menu which included this Turkey meatloaf that looked WORSE than the dog food i give to my dog. On to the "main course" it was the Silver Cod which was good but they must think we have an appitite of a 4 yr old by the portions that were served. The desset was Whatever.. i wouldnt send my worst Enemy there. I Hope you guys save your money and go somewhere better than this Place

Horrible food

Paying $100 per person for dinner, I would expect the food to be at least decent. However it was definitely not the case at Megu. We went there on a Sunday night and the place was quite empty. We ordered kobe beef from the restaurant week menu, it tasted like regular beef, but it was better than all the other food we ordered. The sushi was about $10 a piece and it tasted really bad, I have had much better salmon at Minado (the all you can eat Japanese buffet). The tempura was too oily. The "charcoal grill" fish cost $25 and it was two pieces of tiny fish on a small plate with two pieces of wood that was probably used for decoration. We paid $200 (included the $35 from restaurant week menu) and left hungry. We received an extra chocolate cake for dessert but it was definitely not Japanese, it tasted like chocolate sponge cake from Chinese bakery. The food was below average.

Not worth the money

Being fans of the Megu in Tribeca, my wife and I decided give Megu Midtown a try for a celebratory dinner. How different could they be? Short answer: worlds apart. We tried the 7-course tasting menu, and, generally speaking, found the vast majority of courses to be disappointing and uninspired. Other than a Kobe beef entree, which was was extraordinary in both taste and presentation, the remaining entrees were forgettable and bland. Dessert - some tasteless chocolate cake imposter - was laughable; would rather have stopped for a pint of Ben & Jerrys on the walk home. Service was just "OK" considering the place was virtually empty. We'll certainly never return.

Bad Service

We went with a group of 6 on a Saturday night. I've had better sushi from Whole foods. We felt completely ripped off. They lost order for one of our friends and was not very apologetic. By the time they brought out her sushi we were all finished our dinners. They did not comp her meal but offered her a free dessert. Only limited items though, nothing too expensive according to the waiter who suddenly lost his accident and gained an attitude. We spent over $900 that evening between the lounge and dinner and expected better quality service. The couple next to us was sending sake and wine back left and right between text messaging on their phones and were getting treated better than the paying customers. An unbelievable experience which unfortunately will not be forgotten for a long time.

• Pros: Had a nice lounge upstairs with very fancy bathrooms.
• Cons: Service was poor, has better sushi at the supermarket

Perfect Dinner...

I was pretty impressed with both the food and the service at the Megu. The menu is very interesting and the presentation of the food was beautiful. The prices are on the high side, but I think the setting and service can justify the price. This is defiantly a dressy place! .I would recommend to anyone

I was dragged but ended up loving it!

I am not keen on Japanese food. I don't prefer raw fish and have always been weary of sushi, but my wife wanted to try megu in the UN. We heard downtown was more hip and we are a bit older to fit in there. She dragged me and I am so glad she did. We went for dinner and there were two menus. a restaurant week one which we didn't even look at and the main dining one. I did not order sushi, my wife did and she said it was "good" but I couldn't tell you. The appetizers we ordered were rich and so flavorful my mouth waters when I think about them still. The red miso soup looked scary at first but you cuold taste how true japanese it was. I have been dragged to Nobu and I have to say that Megu is far better not just with food, but the service as well. Glasses always filled, The server recommended dishes when i told her I did not like raw fish that were impeccable, and managers were associating themselves and talking with the customers. It was a great atmosphere. My wife just said that the YellowTail carpaccio was her favorite. She said the fish was delicious and it was just the right kind of spicy. She still remembers it and we were there two weeks ago. I guess this is a true japanese restaurant and it blew me out of the water/ I will definitely go back again. The menu was so overwhelming and the raw/cooked ratio was about even so if you are like me and a little squirmish, try this place. You won't regret it.
