Food is delicious, service is lousy

by tdot

I often order lunch from Aoki because the cost of the 2 for $9 or 3 for $11 special is irresistible. That said, I place the order an hour and a half before I need it since I know that it will be a long wait. I highly recommend the spicy crunchy salmon, sweet potato roll, and eel anything.

  • Pros: Food, lunch special prices
  • Cons: Bad service, no regard for their customers

Great sushi, terrific atmosphere, reasonable prices.

Service was quick and attentive. Restaurant was not crowded so we were seated immediately but it was a Monday night. Best dish of the night: calamari with ginger sauce. Wow!

awesome place

by StarKristen

A great place to hang out with friends and have a drink. The variety of Japanese dishes available is awesome. It's delicious and very authentic. The food comes in small portions so be prepared to spend a little more.

  • Pros: Amazing food, amazing prices
  • Cons: Too close to Times Square

Great food and ambiance. Reasonable prices and great service!

by gbarry

Went this past Friday with a party of four. Attentive service by multiple hosts/hostesses. Wine choices were very good (surprising for a sushi place). Tranquil waterfall in the dining room was a nice touch. We had some unique dishes/rolls and all were delicious. BBQ Chilean Sea Bass roll, Amazing spicy mix was just that. Spicy mixed sushi formed into a star shape and covered in black caviar and a quail egg. It was wonderful. We will return and highly recommend it to others. Reasonable prices didn?t hurt, either!

  • Pros: Food, service

Best Cheap Japanese in NYC

by trusavage

I found this place this summer. I've been to a ton of japanese/sushi restaurants in NYC and this is definitely my favorite. The decor is trendy and modern, but the prices are really low. The lunch special is especially amazing. This is all not mentioning the food, which is great in itself. Overall, a great spot. If you're in the area, especially around lunch time, make sure to stop by.

  • Pros: Food, style, service, value
  • Cons: In kind of a weird location

Creative menu and trendy decor

by greghi

Very good sushi and portions. Trendy decor and friendly service. Seating in booths could use back cushions as seats are spaced far from tables. Creative menu (Edamame soup!), with over 90 choices.

Individually wrapped mints would be a more sanitary choice. Give it a try--very convenient to the Theatre District.

Quite a find in the Theater District - Quiet, great food & WONDERFUL staff!!

by camsmom23

I went here by myself after a long day working and wanted to find a nice sushi bar, close to my hotel (the Doubletree) where I could sit, wind down and read my novel over sake and a few sushi bites. Many of the sushi bars in NY are very expensive & noisy and I was pleased to find one within walking distance at a very reasonable price range. They have great rolls and super fresh fish. The presentation of each piece is very nice as well. There was NO ONE in there when I got there at about 8:00PM (which, after eating there, I was very surprised to find) . Service was excellent from all.

What WOW'ed me was when I returned about 2 months later, and sat down....the sushi chef said "Hi!...Long time since you were here last...a couple months ago?" and made the same starter roll I had the first time there - FROM MEMORY!! He actually DID remember me from a single visit 2 months prior. Wow! Now in a city that size, that was very impressive. There were a few more customers this time, but again, I got great service, great food and a lovely dinner. I loved it so much I went back the next night and ate there again. Thank you!! I will return EVERY time I am in the city!

  • Pros: Everything, great for couples, fresh food, nice simple decor
  • Cons: Not really any, unless you are going there to socialize and meet people
