I have been desperately searching for a hair cut in NYC ever since I moved here about one month ago. I have heard mixed reviews about Frederic Fekkai, but they had convenient hours, and I know the salon is very reputable, so i figured, it couldn't be bad. When I got there, I told my stylist exactly what I wanted and it seemed like we were on the same page. They spent about 4 minutes washing my hair...and about the same time cutting it...all while I was standing up. After all was said and done, I was $200 dollars down, and walked out looking EXACTLY the same as I did when I walked in. When I complained to my stylist, and told him I wanted him to do more, he refused, and then pushed me out the door. The atmosphere there is so pretentious, they don't care about you, or your wants or needs, and I left feeling extremely. I would normally not be interested in writing any sort of review, but this experience was so bad, I felt I had no choice. Go somewhere else.

Pros: None

Cons: Awful service, inexperienced staff, too expensive

Every POOR review is CORRECT. I have NEVER in my life (of salons) been treated so badly and my hair is a mess. I went to the Soho salon and have been going to Jamie. He had me in tears and burnt my hair.

This is not worth themoney. My friend and I went for haircuts with Mia. We were scheduled for appointments one after the other. it became a disaster. She didnt listen to me when I told her i wanted anew style and described it to her very clearly. She cut it the same way but at the same time she was trying to finish my friends. So she became overwhelmed very quicklly as she was falling behind. It was lik she was paniced, The more crazy she got the worse the haircut became. This is the worst cut i have had in 20 years in New York. Even cheapos. My friends hair was uneven and chopped. It looked awful. We have both spend another 200 to get them fixed. Worst of all is the front desk. They are rude and really dont help at all. We both called and left messages for the manager to no avail. No one calls back or gets on the phone or sends a letter, nothing. We left messages for the manager, a Miss Bao.They dont care. This may have a high end name and gets all the out of towners but believe me it is not worth it.

Cons: terrible cut, uncaring managers

I walked into Fekkai @ 5:00 pm on a busy Saturday for a consult with Jeffrey Tam who was recommended by one of their stylists to a friend of mine. I was so disappointed about highlights I received the day before from Salon AKS that I got depressed every time a passed a mirror. I do not live in NYC and get to the city about three times a year. Jeffrey didn't know me from a hole in the wall but he came out to the front and squeezed me in on the spot. Not only did he correct the color, he didn't bad mouth the job done by the other colorist and gave me some advice on what to ask for when I am at home. He even encouraged me to call him if I had any other questions. I have been to some upscale salons (Salon AKS and Rita Hazan) but from now on, Jeffrey will be the only colorist I will see when I come to the city.

I have been a loyal Frederic Fekkai customer for 15 years following the salon from it's original location at Bergdorf's to 57th Street, and now to the new Fifth Avenue location. My regular hair dresser is now on a reduced schedule making appointment setting challenging. I've tried for 2 weeks to get an apointment. I've made multiple phone calls and have spoken with 5 different people including the manager. Tonight, after 10 minutes trying to find a mutually acceptable appointment time, the desk manager Melanie actually hung up the phone on me! I was stunned. I'm incredibly disapointed by the way I was treated. Generally the service at Frederic Fekkai is good and my hair cuts have been wonderful. I've never been hung up on before. It's very rude. I feel terrible that after all these years I won't be going back to the salon and my hair dresser won't know why.

Cons: Scheduling managers and clerks are rude and will hang up the phone on you

I've been coloring my hair for the past 15 years and this was by far the worst experience of my life. I had heard really good things about this salon, and saw that Citysearch editor's had rated it the top pick for a hair salon, so I decided to visit the salon to touch up my roots. My hair has been reddish blonde for years and I wanted to keep it that color--just freshened up. The colorist tried to persuade me to go brown and I refused. I said that if she didn't feel comfortable coloring my hair the way I wanted, I could see someone else. I should have walked out then because the end result was unbelievable for a top salon. However, the colorist, Elizabeth, insisted that she knew what to do. She began by coloring my roots bright red and then bleached out the rest white blonde. Following this she put on a rinse to the bleached part so that it did look a nice strawberry color. The cost was $300. However, the next day when I washed it--all the wash rinsed out and I was left with an inch of bright red roots and the rest was bright white. Furthermore, the bleach job totally fried my hair. My hair had never ever looked that bad--including the time my cousin colored it in jr high school. The salon offered to recolor my hair (with a different colorist) for free, who insisted that I had to dye it dark red/brown to sink into --leaving me with red roots and much lighter other parts--nothing was blended at all. I've had to have it recolor my hair six times since that color experience (just two months ago) and have spent more than $1000 on trying to fix my hair. I was so shocked and disappointed that a highly rated professional hair salon could do such a really bad job. I would caution anyone from going there.

I have gone to Fekkai several times, I started going to see Brandon Shin at the 57 St location 6 years ago. Brandon did amazing cuts however a good friend of mine opened a salon, so I have been going to him for the past year. I wanted to try Fekkai again, I have been to the new Bendel's location twice, both visits I saw Roz for a cut. She was amazing! Second time I got color with Beth. She did not listen to me whatsoever and did what she wanted, I walked out of the salon looking like a skunk. I have dark brown hair, and ended up with a platinum blond streak on the left side of my head ONLY. I have gotten color at a few high end salons in NYC, Oribe, Bumble & Bumble, I was expecting beautiful, quality color from Fekkai and I walked out looking like I spent $25 at Supercuts. I have never been more disappointed in a colorist. After calling 3 times to speak with the person in charge of re-dos (with no call back) I finally demanded to speak with a manager. I returned for my re-do and Beth was rude to me, left the color on way too long without checking on me and then left someone else to finish her horrible job without even speaking to me before I left. I now have bright red roots and black ends. I would not reccomend Beth for color. I would go back to Roz for a cut, but have a bad taste in my mouth altogether. Because of it's increased size the salon is very impersonal, staff is extremly rude (with the exception of Roz). Take your $$$ elsewhere!

Pros: B-list celeb sightings

Cons: Rude staff

What you see is not what you get at Frederic Fekkai, because what they tell you on the phone and even what they have listed on their menu may not be what they charge you. After my arrival for my appointment on August 18, 2007, the stylist, Alexandre, asked me how I wanted to style my hair. I thought that perhaps curls would be nice. Upon checkout, I was presented with an additional, previously undisclosed $50 fee called a "curling iron add on" on top of a "blow-out" fee of $85. The industry standard at salons such as Bumble and Bumble is a set styling fee regardless of the equipment used. Therefore, you would think using another tool does mean you pay for their cost of buying the tool they use on you. My makeup application differed both from the published rate (which was quoted to me at the time I reserved the appointment) of $75. Upon checkout, I was presented with an invoice for $100. I spoke with one salon manager on Friday, August 24, and then again on Monday, August 27, when I was told by the salon manager that the position of the salon director, Raha Ashrafi (with whom I did not get a chance to speak because apparently she hung up on me prior to our discussion), is that I was lucky I didn't get charged more money for the same service. My general impression was that the stylists and management were very arrogant and the service was horrible. However, Ananda (makeup artist) and Manana (eyebrow waxing) were great; if I could pay them for their services without having to go back to Fekkai, I would.

Pros: Good makeup artist and eyebrow wax

Cons: Secret add-on charges, arrogant staff

I have curly hair but I like to wear it straight too! I've gotten some pretty bad haircuts, but never here!! I've always seen Herve and he is wonderful! Friendly, sweet, and a genius if you ask me! Last 2 times time I brought in a picture of exactly what I wanted and he totally made it happen! Even better than the picture! I had a party to go to that night and as Herve said, "I'll make you look fabulous..." and he did! The cut was so amazing that my curls even looked better! It was 11 weeks before I went again... so even though it's expensive, it lasts a long time! I would highly recommend going to him especially if you are bored with your look, just need a change, or want to be transformed and look sophisticated!

Pros: Great haircut!

Cons: Expensive... but still worth it!
