Great Quality of Work, if You Can Tolerate the Service

by JohnR29

I've been a customer of Mr. Kelly/La Rukico over the last year (a little longer). During that time I've made purchases for about 15 custom tailored shirts and 2 suits.

First I'll comment on the quality of work. Comparing to off-the-rack, and 3 other tailors I've used, Mr. Kelly's quality of work from Hong Kong is, for the most part, top-notch. Shirts have always been the exact detail seen in the swatches and also constructed of good quality (with the exception of two that had the sleeves worn out quicker than normal. The measurements felt true to my actual build however, now thinking back I would have asked for a few tweaks here and there (smaller cut in the back, room for a watch in one sleeve, etc.). So with that I recommend if you go (to any tailor for that matter), either ask questions or specify EXACTLY what little details you want done. After all you are paying for it. The suits were also constructed as detailed and in good quality. I like how little details were not overlooked (back seam on waist pants for support, extra wear material on inside of pant leg bottoms, and of course the obvious signs of a bespoke suit - surgeon's cuffs, embedded name inside suit, etc.).

Additionally, Mr. Kelly has always been pretty good about when I come back with some adjustments and to make a couple tweaks here and there.

But now onto the service and such. Customer service is anything but "standard" here. One usually looks for the one-on-one customer experience and at the very least to go into a custom tailor to learn more about what he/she would want and such. Like I said, learn NOT lectured or treated with disdain. The initial times I was in I was able to ignore that for the basis that the quality was good, but coming back I felt like I had a burden to deal with every time I wanted to drop by, in having to deal with his poor customer service and lackluster professionalism. I've probably been in a few times over the last few months and yet still they don't even recognize me or have a record in their minds -- poor client relations in my mind. You would think that after 10+ orders this year alone they would know who I was, as well as the 5+ orders from my brother.

So in conclusion, I would say if you can get in and cut through the cloud of egotistical B.S. and dictate exactly what you want and keep the hostile tone down, the quality is great and the price is good for what you are going to likely find in the area.

  • Pros: Good quality/warranty on work
  • Cons: Lack of Professionalism, custom client feeling

Better than Brooks Brothers

by award777

I order a custom suit from La Rukico Tailors two weeks after placing an order for s semi custom suit from Brooks Brothers. I picked up my suit and two shirts from La Rukico yesterday and they were perfect. I am still waiting over six weeks for my Brooks Brothers suit which will still need to be altered. La Rukico's service was excellent and their prices are very competitive. I will be buying more products from them. Highly recomended

  • Pros: Very good quality, service and price

Best tailor in NYC

by NYC Lawyer

I've spent years buying suits at Barney's, Brooks Brothers and Neiman Marcus, having them tailored and always being disappointed. I will never do so again. For less money, Mr. Kelly provides finer materials and superior craftsmanship. The suits look and feel better than anything from Hickey Freeman, Purple Label or Armani. There truly is no substitute for a suit hand tailored for your body.

  • Pros: Excellent tailoring and limitless options
  • Cons: None.

The only tailor I'll go to

by haydenvdr

I'll be honest; some of the garments I've ordered have come in incorrectly - but guess what? Mr Kelly stands by every single piece of clothing he sells. I have never had a problem getting an order corrected. I vehemently disagree with the guy who said that the customer is treated like a king until after the purchase. I'd actually argue it's the exact opposite. In fact, when Mr Kelly noticed that I dropped some weight he recommended that I bring in the suits I had made a few years ago and get them taken in - for free! Like I said, the only tailor I'll go to.

A Tailor with Every Stitch

by Dellnj30

They say clothes makes the man , well then Mr.Kelly must be the Hephaestus of cloth and twine, i must say never have i had a more pleasant , customer experience and equal only to the fine work and design of my suit. Mr.Kelly Works with you on each and every layer of picking what works for you, while giving you the ability to find your own feel and style.

I've often felt that the lack of customer care and satisfaction is an art lost to the modern day consumer, a personal touch of making the client feel that his/her business isn't as nearly important as their satisfaction.

In all reality i read a post here in regard to the 3 year old shirt, well lets be honest that's not being very realistic. What business would redeem a 3 Year old shirt or a 3 year old Anything. But i digress, Mr.Kelly thank you for keeping your are art and Mastering your craft. i look forward to returning i would highly recommend you to anyone.

Excellent custom suits...quality & price!

by dmazz777

The service is professional, quality designer fabric and the price is right.

I came in to purchase a suit and tuxedo. They took my measurements, came back to try on and the suits were PERFECT! Very accurate and quick! I've been to different tailors...Asia, London...by far this is the best in NYC!

  • Pros: Best tailor in NYC, no question!

poor service, poor fit

by nordr

My history with La Rukico is as follows. I bought two shirts from them about 2 years ago. At the time I received great service, the two owners of the shop I believe are father and son and were very friendly people. Once I got the shirts I noticed that they were of good quality (not extraordinary in anyway but acceptable) but that the neck was far too small. I could not even button the neck, not even close. I am a physician so the time I have to spend trekking back and forth to midtown to get all this fixed is very limited. I basically forgot about it and just wore the shirts occasionally when I didn't need to button the collar.

Two years later I decided to give them a second try. I went in and explained to them that I had previously ordered two shirts from them and that the collar was too tight so I wanted to make sure that the collar fit properly this time. In fact I told them to make it an extra half inch bigger for comfort. Three weeks pass and I get an e-mail saying my shirts are ready. I run in an pick them up quickly without trying them on. Once I get home I notice that while the collar is marginally larger this time it is still much too tight. I wear the collar to work the next day thinking that maybe it will loosen up but the only thing that happens is that in the middle of the day to top button literally pops off.

I go back to La Rukico and explain what has happened and how I now have 4 shirts that do not fit me. I ask if he can please fix these two other shirts that I have as well. To my complete shock he becomes enraged, actually shaking with anger, and tells me that there is nothing he can do about a shirt he made two years ago and that I should "throw it away."

Needless to say I am very dismayed by this reaction. I would not advise anyone to shop at this place. You will be treated like a king until there is a problem at which point it seems his ego cannot withstand any hint that he may have made a mistake. I will not be back.

  • Pros: low prices
  • Cons: see review

Too good to be true

by chakey

One sweaty spring afternoon I walked into La Rukico in an ill-fitting oxxford suit with two bolts of Marinella fabric under my arm. A month and $1,000 later I am the proud owner of two custom suits with my preferred details (working sleeve buttons, ticket pocket) worthy of Naples or Savile Row. These gents are a hoot too. When you go to La Rukico you feel like you know a secret the best-dressed men in the world would like to know.

  • Pros: A great custom suit and tailoring of used suit
  • Cons: None
