Friendly Staff but My Dog Came Home Sick!
3 Star Rating: Average

03/12/2008 Posted by caz1221

Recently I boarded my 8-month-old puppy for the first time while I was away for the weekend. A friend recommended The Paw Stop, and after seeing the great reviews here, I made a reservation. Everyone I dealt with was very friendly and seemed knowledgeable. When I dropped my dog off, one of the staff members took him into the playroom to make sure there weren't any problems with the other dogs while I observed. They were also happy to administer his eye medication for a small charge and stored his carrier so I didn't have to lug it home and then back again. However, when I picked him up 3 days later, I was a little surprised to find that he was very grungy - even though he had been playing with other dogs for 3 days, he hadn't been cleaned at all (not even a wipe-down). Next time, I'll consider paying for a bath. When we got home, my dog fell asleep for 5 straight hours (which is not normal for him). I chalked it up to him being tired from so much playing, but later that night, he began exhibiting signs of giardia. Sure enough, when I took him into the vet, he had giardia! My friend who recommended The Paw Stop had a similar experience recently where her two dogs came home with giardia after being boarded there. I understand that the staff can't be expected to know if a dog is sick if it isn't showing signs of illness, but I wrote this review because I underestimated the risk of my dog getting sick while being boarded, and I think it's important to be aware of the possibility. In the future, I will definitely factor in the extra cost of diagnosis and treatment when considering whether to board my dog.

Pros: friendly staff, convenient location

Cons: sick dogs!

Response from this business

Understandable

Many times customers who have never owned or boarded a dog before do not fully understand the expectations for care when they drop their dogs off at a facility like ours. We are diligent in our efforts to keep our place clean and the dogs healthy and safe. The fact is that Pet Parents have their dogs stay with us because they want them to be well cared for and have fun. We watch them carefully and try to care for them as you would yourself. Dogs do play here all day and interact with other dogs. The natural stress of being away from you in a strange environment plus the exercise will make them tired and even a little grungy. They often do not stop playing until they get home which is why you will see them sleep for such a long period of time when they do. We are very sorry that your dog got sick. That certainly was not the intention. If we could have prevented it, we would have taken . . . PLEASE VISIT www.thepawstop.com/funstuff-doggiedancorner.aspx for remaining thoughts.
