I stumbled upon September Wines while on business in the lower east side. The proprietor listened to my likes and dislikes and made some stunning recommendations, most notably a 2005 Chablis at what I considered a bargain price. After drinking it, I bought all remaining stock. September Wines is not my closest wine shop by a long stretch. However, it is worth travelling the distance for the thoughtful advice and friendly service.
Pros: knowledgable advice, unpretentious service, edgy atmosphere

As a wine connoisseur, I've struggled in finding a one-stop wine shop. I've either come across monster-sized wine stores where you have to take a number, deli-like wine/liquor stores who don't know wine, or boutique like shops that are too limited in selection. My friend turned me to September Wines. All it took was one visit... and I was hooked. I've been going for 6 months now and I was compelled to comment how excellent this place is! My friend lives in Greenwich Village, I live in SOHO, and we both walk to this place every weekend. The staff is incredibly knowledgeable, down-to-earth and helpful. They have the best price points I have encountered in NYC and have a knack for picking and recommending wines at a reasonable price points ($9-15 bottle) that taste like $20-$30+ bottles -- and a great selection of varietals! Can’t say enough, I love this place!
Pros: knowledgeable staff & great prices!
Cons: none.

Greatest wine Shop in town. I walk from SoHo a couple of times a week to buy whatever it is the staff recommends that day. They haven't missed once.
Pros: great values, great atmosphere
Cons: none!

I'm actually trying to remember what wine shopping was like before I ventured into September. I had tried Discovery Wines, but it was often weirdly tense in there, with a lot of staff turnover and increasingly rising prices. I shopped at faraway Warehouse Wines, but--as advertised--it looked and felt like a warehouse. And their delivery policy was somewhat restrictive: next day delivery at any time within a wide-ranging, multi-hour block, so I'd be resentfully stuck at home. I also tried the shop on Clinton Street, but they have very few wines at the bottom of the price range, and when I did find something suitable for my budget, for one reason or another, it took a long time to pay--their computer system was always cranky or confusing to the ever-changing salespeople, and the service at my price level was utterly indifferent. So finding a nearby, well-run and attractively-designed store staffed by a proprietor and committed salespeople who appreciate everyone's custom, and who offer variety, novelty, and adventure in wine drinking personally tailored to every budget has been a boon. And what can be said about an already busy and hard-working proprietor who tied a red velvet bow around every single one of the hundreds of bottles on display during the holiday season, making an already tasteful display incrementally more festive? We love you September. Don't ever leave!
Pros: Informed friendly staff
Cons: Can't think of any

A manageable and well-thought out selection; all price points available, great wine, a moderate but sufficient offering of booze, outstanding service and a very hip vibe. Great shop for both novice and expert alike. Don't expect to see Veuve Cliquot and other mass-produced offerings here. These people know better than that.
Pros: Outstanding Selection/Great Prices
Cons: None

The selection is great and every wine I've had from there is amazing (even the $8 cheapies). They have a very knowledgable staff and aren't snooty at all. They play the coolest music in there too.
Pros: Interesting selection; all price points available; great ambience; outstanding service
Cons: None

This shop opened about a year ago and has consistently had a good selection of wines to choose from. Free tastings several nights are a bonus!
