Awful & Terrible, Terrible & Awful

by CMG352

Planned a bachelorette party for my friend and made reservations at R Bar. Told if we got there by 11 we wouldn't need to wait in line. Also told we had a table reserved in the front bar and would have back bar access. Even called the day of to confirm reservation. When we got there, well before 11, were told we had to wait in line to get in even though we were on the list. When we got in, we were told we didn't have a table, only back room access. Specifically chose this bar because it's ROCK AND ROLL only to get there and find they play the same pop music club stuff everyone else plays. Crowd was definitely barely 21 frat kids. Not what they advertise, not what we were promised. In fact, we were blatantly lied to about what we were getting. We had one overpriced drink and bailed.

  • Pros: they serve drinks albeit bad and overpriced
  • Cons: if you're a rock and roll bar, PLAY ROCK N ROLL!!!

R Bar Never Dissapoints

by VioletSkin

I celebrated my birthday here back in January and silly me waited until the week before to call and book a table. (No charge/bottle service required to reserve a table!) The manager informed me that they were all booked up with parties for that Saturday night but since I had my heart set on having my party at R Bar she went out of her way and set up a special private area for my party. The night ended up being incredible...it was my first time there as well as the first time for many of my friends and we all had a fantastic time. The decor in this place is so rockin' and unlike any other Manhattan bars that I've been to...its like a rock and roll brothel. The front room is large with couches and a really long bar (with the best bartenders!) and toward the back is a second room with stripper poles and another bar. The artwork consists of beautiful ladies posing with guitars, Blondie, and Mick Jagger to name a few. I've gone back a few times since my party and its always been a really great time...from the drinks, to the staff, to the crowd, to the music I give this place an A++.

  • Pros: rockin' decor, delicious cocktails, great crowd
  • Cons: NONE

NOT a place for a party

by CityChic8515

I was planning my birthday party at R Bar, and it turned into one hot mess. They told me that for my party, my friends could say my name at the door and would not have a problem getting in, without waiting on line. Well, that turned out to be a total lie, and my friends were waiting outside in the freezing cold for atleast a half hour just to get in to my RESERVED area in the back. I think they must have let everyone in the reserved party area, because it was totally packed and I couldn't find my friends for my own party. Also, I was supposed to get a free bottle of champagne (due to over booking of the party room by the party planner) and I never got one. When I was looking for the manager to get my bottle, the bouncers just brushed me off. If you plan on having a party here, tell everyone to get there early, otherwise your party at R Bar will be OUTSIDE.

  • Pros: Fun place, good music, good drinks and decent prices
  • Cons: Wait outside, overcrowded, party planning was very messy and they overbooked

R . . . N-O

by rockmcallister

Recently caught a friend's band here. R Bar can perhaps best be described as what an aspiring hipster with a trust fund living somewhere in the heartland dreams of when he fantasizes about a "cool New York bar". The front room's decor consists of red velour, bad lighting, uncomfortable furniture, and gigantic photos of scantily clad women. (The photos are all treated to look like those pseudo-hologram things that used to come in Cracker Jacks.) In other words, all class.

The back room, where bands play, features two separate sets of stripper poles -- in case, I suppose, a glut of strippers happen to show up on any given weeknight. (Ladies, ladies -- no shoving!) The room is decorated with photos of CBGBs, photos of Debbie Harry and Joey Ramone playing at CBGBs, etc. Seriously, if your bar features multiple pictures of a different, much cooler bar, you have scaled new heights on the mountain of lameness.

Great night

by brett02

I Recently came to R bar on a friday night. The music was great, they played nice mix of music from great rock to classics. We danced all night long, the drinks were cheap and strong. We even got a table at the back bar and had an area to our selves. I would definitely come back in the near future.

  • Pros: Great music
  • Cons: none

Poor Door Policy

by twiceasnice11

We went here to party over the weekend and were upset to discover that our names were on the list> The doorman told if they were not on the list "Thats not his problem" . I asked to see the manager girl who I booked with and they said they had no manager who was female who worked there. We were told basically we were not welcome and that was it!!! Thats very bad form on there part and we shall not be visiting there venu in the future. Like all the other reviews say there doorstaff are rude!!!!!

  • Pros: Nothing
  • Cons: Doorstaff and Manager

Bouncers ruin an otherwise great bar

by baristette

Once you are in, R Bar is a great place - good music and a fun atmosphere. But, what could have been a great night at a cool bar was ruined because of the a$$holes at the door. If you are a guy, you're not getting in after 11. In fact, even if there's absolutely no line, the bouncers will still deny guys at the door. NEWS FLASH: Women don't want to go to a bar just to be with other women.

A group of eight girlfriends and I were already there and planned on meeting three or four of our guys friends later on. The guys all came alone or in groups of two but none of them were able to get in. We eventually left to another bar where all of us could get in and had a great time there. R Bar missed out on a ton of business.

And, the whole screening process is so ridiculous because the guys that did get into the bar weren't what I would exactly describe as alpha males.

Management should definitely reconsider their door policy - it's such a shame that the first impression people get of R Bar starts with the jerks at the door.

  • Pros: Music, Ambience
  • Cons: Bouncers are horrible
