fair and balanced review

by cheflover99

When writing a review one takes the time to share their experience with others.

Reviews can be both negative or positive.

The review dated 01/03/09 by musicmuse04 shows another approach.

As a regular customer I have never experienced any rudeness on the part of the staff and least of all

the chef.

The restaurant and it's staff bring me back for one reason, warmth.

Having worked in the restaurant business for 20 years, I have seen my share of the good, the bad and the ugly.

Shorty's32 has always been consistent for great food at fair prices.

The staff has always made me feel at home.

Upon reading the review by musicmuse04 I couldn't help but question the motive behind it.

I encourage Musicmuse04 to consider returning and giving it another chance.

After all shouldn't you challenge the restaurant to prove you wrong?

When writing a review I look for the positive and the negative.

Musicmuse04 your review strikes me as personal and I can't help but wonder what really happened.

HORRIBLE service, over priced and rude. Go

by musicmuse04

Very disappointed! I've been to shorties a number of times. The food has never been great but went as a relief from my normal SoHo hot spots. They've dumbed down much of the menu but not the prices. Recently went with some friends. They were apparently OUT of nearly the entire menu and then a cook threw out one of our orders which was the last available. Apparently the Chef/Owner was personally offended when we complained and yelled at us told us to leave. Very unprofessional! You don't treat customers that way! Not to mention, our waitress was more interested in entertaining her boy-friend than serving us! Won't be going back, NOR would I recommend. There are plenty of other SoHo places with better food and better service!!

  • Pros: Convenient for SoHo regs
  • Cons: Rude service, over priced, not worth it!

Really good spot

by CaroleFagnn

Shorty's incredibly delicious food, attentive and intelligent service, intimate atmosphere, great wine list and reasonable prices make it one of my favorite restaurants in New York.

I ordered The roast chicken had just the right amount of salty seasoning, and was served on a perfectly mashed potatoes and fried garlic. It was perhaps the best roast chicken I've ever had.

We were seated immediately upon arrival as per our reservation. None of that "oh, we're getting your table ready now" junk. We said 7:30, we arrived at 7:30, and we had a great table ready at 7:30. Thank you.

If you like wine, you'll find the knowledgeable staff and great American and French wine list to be really satisfying, too.

Highly, highly recommend this restaurant

  • Pros: food,ambiance
  • Cons: slow service

really cute little spot with great food!

by nycbkgirl

I stumbled into this place one day while walking in the neighborhood with my parents and we decided to give it a shot....you never know what you're in for when you've never heard of the place....but this was a great find! My bloody mary was perfect, my omlet was delicious, my parents both ordere burgers which were incredible! Not to mention the waitstaff was very friendly and accomodating. My only issue was that everything seemed to take a little too long to come out, even the drinks, which was suprising because the place wasn't that busy.....(but I think we came after the brunch rush so everything was slowing down.) The atmosphere is fun, which Credence Clearwater playing and other classic favorites and unique lamps radomly hanging....I would totally go back and I recommend you do the same!

  • Pros: FOOD, bloody mary, atmosphere
  • Cons: a little slow

This is the spot to "Mule" out!

by myfriendbob

Simply put: this place kills it! I have been 7 times and I don't even live in the 'hood. Shortys has a simple, but tasty menu. The Cod dish rules. Burger is one of the juiciest in NYC. The pasta dish on the ap menu is one of the best I've ever tasted. I went recently with another couple to introduce them to the spot and they flipped out. My friend's girlfriend is a VERY finicky eater and she said she'd order anything on the menu. We had an awesome bottle of Crozes-Hermitage and jammed out to the tunes while we munched away. I've heard people say the music is too loud but they must be 78 years old (at heart) or haven't heard of acts like Bob Marley, the Grateful Dead or Gov't Mule!! Cannot wait to see what Chef Shorty cooks up for his Spring menu. One of the best editions to the NYC dining scene in the past 2 years since David Chang's Momofuku Ssam ...

  • Pros: Sick music, Cozy vibe, good wine
  • Cons: always a bit of a wait for a table...

Absolutely excellent food. And great service. My wife and I were treated great. And they had an amazing meal that had all of my wife's favorite foods combined. Ribs, Mac 'n Cheese and Guinness!

decent food but poor service

by mugirl

every kitchen has an off night, especially a new place. an off night i can live with. what i can't live with is waiting 2 hours for my food and to not have the waitress even acknowledge that there is a problem. sat down at 7:15, bread finally came to the table at about 8, starters at about 8:45 and finally the mains at 9:30. and we were 2 people, not a large party. the meal was decent but certainly not worth the wait. had the waitress at least apologized and said 'i'm so sorry, we are new and the kitchen is a bit backed up, here is a drink for your patience' maybe i could have forgiven but when i asked very nicely if she had an idea when the starters were coming out she looked at me like i was crazy and said 'uh, they'll be out soon'. luckily the GM was there, he was the only saving grace for the whole evening.

  • Pros: decent food, cute place
  • Cons: poor service, rude waitstaff, kitchen issues

New American boite in Soho makes the familiar seem fresh again.

by Justin Hartung

The Scene
"Shorty" is chef-owner Josh Eden, who received the nickname while working at JoJo, and the numeric portion of the restaurant's awkward name refers to the number of seats in his Soho spot. Despite a ceiling hung with living room lampshades, the homey allure comes more from the cozy room's friendly buzz, the cordial staff and the fragrant smells that waft from the kitchen.

The Food
Seasonally changing menus of New American fare are de rigueur these days, but under Eden's supreme guidance, the dishes on this one command attention with fresh, homespun details. Bright red pomegranate seeds and crisp bacon bits perk up grilled shrimp; homemade cavatelli with wild mushrooms induces earthy nirvana; gruyere broth is poured over flaky cod, caramelized onions and Swiss chard to create something like a deconstructed French onion soup. Though more ordinary, desserts like chocolate bread pudding with caramelized bananas make for a sweetly satisfying send-off.

Hits: Eden's elegant dishes prove comfort food can be homey without being homely.

Misses: The borderline-tacky lampshades and sports-bar-like name feel like afterthoughts.
