unprofessional staff, bad service

by foodlove

Service needs to be improved. Lots of waiters running around, but not able to answer any questions. There was no sign of a manager or supervisor or bartender. The person who came to our table as the manager couldn't understand us.

Food was great, highly recommend despite prices...hey, it's gotta be high rent! I just hope they can hire/train their waitstaff better.

  • Pros: great tandoori items
  • Cons: not welcoming, cold service, no knowledge of menu

Double charged and didn't refund!

by taraontop

I used to order delivery from here all the time but they double charged my credit card once and when i went in to let them know they looked at me like i was a crazy person trying to rip them off. The first time they said i needed to speak with the manager, the second time the same thing so i left my phone number, my credit card number and date of the charge. This was over 6 months ago and still with no response, I never went back ever again ; (

  • Pros: convenient location
  • Cons: not fair

Delicious food

by pearlypg

The first time I ordered pick-up, I wasn't very satisfied with the taste. The second time I ate in, and loved the food. The paneer tikka masala is out of the world - I have never had such delicious paneer! It had a slight "ketchup" taste which gave it a slightly sweet flavor. FYI its not on the menu but they will make it on request. The service was quite good as well. I just wish they got the lachcha paratha right - it was too oily! The location is perfect. I am so going back there. Plus I discovered a Betsey Johnson store just opposite. This is my new hangout.

  • Pros: delicious food, good ambience, good service

One of the best Indian restaurant in the city.

by Sam10046

I have been there so many times and I have seen the changes going on from the day it started few years back. It is an understatement to say that this place is one of the best restaurant in the city. Since I dont eat very spicy food they have a good selection on the menu and it is not very difficult to make a choice as most of the dishes are customized to the american palate. Some of my favorite dishes are veg samosa, Malai Halibut, Tiger prawns, chicken tikka flavored with basil, lamb chop, Hara kebab, and the list goes on. You will also find the traditional dishes found in other restaurants, but with exceptional taste. Recently they introduced lunch buffet during weekends with the regular alacarte menu, and it has come as a relief during this difficult time of financial crisis. For a reasonable price of 13.95 they offer a wide variety of veg and non-veg dishes with dessert and soup. The service has been really exceptional and I would recommend,Daiva, a white girl who has been with the restaurant since it started, stands out of the other servers not only because of her color but of her profound knowledge about the menu, and providing excellent customer service. At times it is really busy and you cannot expect the kind of attention and service we desire ,but it is never compromised.

  • Pros: Very cozy with glass windows, exceptional service, delicious food, competent rates
  • Cons: staff keeps on changing,Some of the servers needs to work on the knowledge of the menu and service.

great food at NORMAL prices!

by culioness

My girlfriend took me on a date last night, and we decided on Indian food, because she tried it a few months ago and has had it four times now, and I had only tried it once about two years ago and hated it but was willing to try it again since she seemed to be so in love with it.

We tried Earthen Oven on recommendation from a coworker of mine, and OHMYGOD it was amazing. We were seated immediately, on a Friday night, and they had some of the best food I've ever had in my life. All of it: the chutney, the appetizer, both of our entrees, even the wine. And the service was almost like fine dining with how proper they were. And the entree price range was like $14-22!! That's like frikkin Applebee's. It was like a totally normal, affordable restaurant but with outstanding food and staff that treated us as if the entrees were $40. The atmosphere is nice too. They even have real orchids on every table. Again, just not what you would expect for such good prices.

Yeah, we're definitely going back there.

  • Pros: amazing food, quickly seated, professional service, great prices
  • Cons: none!

Very good food and service!

By the name, you would not know this was an indian restaurant; however, once you step in and view the large menu, you know you have made a good choice. The food was amazing! I love indian food but it can be hard to find that perfect indian restaurant. This is it. There are so many dishes to choose from and the staff is very friendly. It is bright with a nice decor. I will be going back!

  • Pros: Great food

Thankfully a high Quality Indian Restaurant at the UWS

by anonymousny

Called for reservations & told it is first come first serve specially after 7. pm. No large parties. Was told it is a neighbhourhood family restaurant. I was curious. On a beautiful Friday entered at 7.15 and was pleasantly shocked. it was full & we waited at the bar. Beautiful Bar at the centre of the restaurant but the bar service was just OK. got a table at 8.20. Almost ordered everything on the menu just for the fun of it. What a fare! We ended up eating most of it & packed everything what we could not eat. Mulligatawny soup, EaarthenOven Shorba, Sheekh Kabab, dal Durga, Chicken Curry & my friend's fiery Lamb Vindalo. Nothign could top the Poori though.

Aroma of fresh spices was good enough. Excellent food . efficient service. I thought that they had added few more tables than the restaurant could accomodate. It is crowded. Otherwise a very fine Indian Restaurant.

  • Pros: Very Good Indian Food . Spicy but not hot, Very Very flavoursome. Good Service, good portion size. Good Wine Selection.
  • Cons: Over Crowded. Bar service Average. Could have a cocktail list. Unassuming frontage & entrance.

Best Indian Food this side of the Ocean!

by nalamaharaj

I am an Indian & an Indian food lover. I am always disappointed with Indian fare abroad. I end up eating anything but Indian food. Four dinners & one lunch in 3 months, each better than the previous one. First visit was an unplanned business lunch with a colleague. We both had different fixed lunch specials. My friend had a Tomato & fennel Soup followed by Chicken Tikka Entree. I had a vegetable Samosa with Prawn Curry entree. These were served with Nan bread, Rice and a red kidney bean and Potato curry. As part of the lunch special my friend had mango-ginger kulfi & i had a Gulab Jamun. We shared all the dishes and realised that this was no ordinary Indian restauraant. Samosa was better than the best I had in India with cashewnuts & raisins. Just the right spices and served with fresh tomato & mint sauce. soup was fresh made with vegetable stock. Chicken tikka was tender & juicy. My prawn curry was as good as any I had in india. Service for this lunch was little slow. we were told that they had opened jut few weeks earlier.

I was emboldened enough to invite my business associates & American friends for dinner. Dinner was so much better. The simple decor looked very warm. Music was soothing jaz. Excellent ambience for discussions and enjoying good food. Most importantly the service at all the 4 dinners were prompt & courteous. Two waiters were exceptional, Daiva & Eddy. our tables were cleaned, crumbed and hand towels handed after each meal. The Maitre d was everywhere. Just when we had finished the rice, he was on our table asking if he could bring fresh refill rice and the other time he took our orders explaining each dish and suggesting the best combinations.

The food at each dinner was exceptional. less or no oil. Tandoori Chicken, Kashmiri nan, Black lentil, Fresh okra, Rasmalai, just to name few favourites. My friends thank me for introducing them to this fine restaurant. For me it has been a great find.

  • Pros: Quiet, Clean and Warm. Friendly Service. Exceptional Food. Value for Money.
  • Cons: Side walk section is crowded with tables in a row. No coat check facility. No signage

Ouch

by uuuuuuuu

The most expensive sup-par Indian food in NY. This location has sufferred from massive turnover and it will (unfortunately) be no different this time. There is a better place 1 block up Columbus on the same side of the street.

  • Pros: ?
  • Cons: food
