Only after getting a truly atrocious cut at a well-reviewed place, do I realize what I've found here. So what if the cut took sort of longer than I expected, or that the stylist didn't completely explain what he was going to do before starting. The product was amazing. I went to Ueno in September, after a brutal hair butcher cut off nearly half of my hair, utterly miserable and convinced there was no way to fix that mess up. Well, somehow, it was fixed. I think the process showed true talent and imagination. The reason the cut took a bit longer was because the stylist would stop after every few snips, in the beginning, to look at where he was going. The style I left with was the most flattering my hair has ever been. I was an idiot not to go back (hey, I have to transfer trains to get to Ueno).
Pros: Patient, talented staff; cozy atmosphere; tip envelopes! I can't stand places where the staff hang over your shoulder, waiting for a tip--I love the discretion of Ueno.
Cons: None, it's cheap, it's cute, it's fabulous

I just came back from Ueno on 9th street, and I absolutely love my hair. Eiko was my stylist, and she was attentive and knowledgeable, without any pressure to buy anything--greatly appreciated! I love my hair and my new (dark) color--very stylish. The aromatherapy and hot towels after the shampoo was very relaxing. It was quiet and friendly, I felt very relaxed--I will go back, no doubt (and all that for only $90!) Highly recommended!
Pros: Relaxing, pleasant, elegant, skilled hair stylists
Cons: It takes a while...but it's worth it!

Miki was fantastic cutting my hair. It was so relaxing I fell asleep. He was very attentive and asked for feedback throughout the cut which was really nice. Plus my bangs look awesome. I love the cozy ambience of the place and I think it's a hidden treasure in the neighborhood.
Pros: Very friendly, not pushy and they take walk-ins

Walking by the salon for the first time I thought I might have been in Paris for a moment. The understated decor was accentuated by the larger than life mirrors, leaning against the walls in front of every chair. My stylist was Miki and it's seems he previously had Shiatsu training because just getting a shampoo and rinse was an experience in it's self. I've had scalp massages before from Japanese salons but this went above and beyond. Once the hot towels (with a drop of aromatherapy) are placed over your face you just want to curl up and fall asleep. Then there's the hot towel ear massage. When we finished at the shampoo station I realized we had just begun...my haircut still awaited. Miki was meticulous and thorough leaving me with a fantastic haircut. Then there came the neck and shoulder massage...the experience was too good to be true.

Saw this little gem while walking down the street and, while I didn't need a haircut at the time, I had get a business card for the next time I needed a haircut. I'm very glad I did. They are super hip and elegant at the same time. I was offered a menu of hot teas to choose from while I waited for my appointment ( I was early) and was put at ease from the relaxing environment. Yoko was my stylist and was the complete professional. My haircut ruled!!!!!! and even got a wonderful little neck massage. I can't wait to go back!
Pros: relaxing, wonderful service, very pleasant staff, excellent haircut

im in finance and reside in nolita. the stress levels are off the charts! uneno is my favorite place to go for what i need; relaxtion and to look good. i manage to visit at least three times a month, just getting a trim and an occassional highlight. i go to both locations because i just cant get enough of the staff and the service. on the verge of harraassment, i get endless amounts of compliments on my hair. part of me thinks, why tell anyone my secret? i want ueno all to myself. but, of course, something this good even brings out the sharing in me.
Pros: yoko ueno (stunning), one just feels special there.
Cons: absolutely zero!

I was frazzeled..booking a last minute appointment out of sheer desperation ( I had a hot date and my regular colorist couldn't squeeze me in!?) The lovely ladies at Ueno sweetly accomadated me on the spot! Although it was last minute and I was so stressed out, from the moment I sat down in the chair I instantly began to feel relaxed!...Chet Baker krooned away softly behind me, and Yoko herself looked after my color! In the two hours I spent in Ueno, I walked out feeling like I had spent the whole day at the spa! I FELT GREAT! With a bounce in my step later that night, my date actually asked me, "who does your hair? I LOVE it!" Okay so I gave him her card, thinking she could work her magic fingers through his hair too. (god knows he kinda needs it!) What happened by chance is now my new neighborhood favorite!
Pros: convenient, affordable, stylish, great coffee, and the shampoo massage - exhilirating!
Cons: none

I live in DC, but I travel all the way up to NYC just to get my hair cut at Ueno Salon. I absolutely LOVE it there. From the ambiance (classy and chic) to the people (friendly and knowledgeable), I finally found the only place I'll get my hair done. People think I'm crazy for driving all the way up every time I want a hair cut, but once they see my hair, THEY want to go up too! I've been to both the Nolita and East Village locations, and I love them both. I wish they'd open another one down here!
Pros: service, friendliness, SKILLS!
Cons: NONE!!!!!
