Best cut on the east coast

by CSMobileUser

I have had a lot of haircuts in my travels but this one was yet the best cut I have ever gotten. The barbers name was Jason. He took his time and focused on the details and shape of my head.He didn't talk much but damn sure can cut hair. I received nothing but coments for the next 2 weeks. The atmosphere was great and the other barbers were funny as hell,I had a great experience!

The Emperor's New (Poorly Made) Clothes

by DownTownShorty

Granted the over-all styling of Freeman's Sporting Club is pretty sharp. Masculine, seeded with vintage and maintaining an undeniable level of snobbery that may even make someone feel special to be there...BUT

the quality of craftsmanship is just poor.

I purchased three "Brooklyn made" dress shirts all 3 of which lost their buttons during the first wearing! (Not even laundered yet)

When I brought them back in to explain, I was met with the most arrogant of attitudes. The nerve of me to bring these back in! When I looked for another style to exchange them for I realized that I had been overcharged for these shirts.

The sales associate explained to me that all of the shirts hanging were incorrectly priced and I had actually been charged the correct price. WHAT? Give me a break.

I left the shirts to have the buttons sewn on properly and waited for over a month before they were ready. I called several times and was told that "next time" it would be easier for me to just take them to my tailor for repair. Imagine!

This place is lame.

If you really want some of this (now pretty cliche) aesthetic in you shopping, just head over to Ernst Sewn, or the (JCrew) Liquor Store, or RRL, or Duncan Quinn, or Bespoke, or.... all of which places you will find outstanding customer service, a warm gentleman's atmosphere and premium quality!

  • Pros: Nicely styled store and employees
  • Cons: Poor Quality, Overpriced, Terrible Customer Service

Terrible cut

by samoproducer

I bought the hype, and shelled out the extra $40 clams for a cut here a while back. It was a terrible mistake. Didn't give me the cut I wanted, and it looked retarded. I had to get it fixed at the cheaper barber a week later. Avoid the hype.

Believe the Hype

by mcfalcon

I just returned from the new FSC outpost on Horatio St. and it lived up to the billing. The way people talk about it you'd think going there was akin to frat plege party, military initialion or a cotillion.

Nothing is further from the truth.

Just like any great bar, confidence, manners and a good communiction will get you everywhere here.

Granted it was a world-class crisp fall day, I happended to be somewhat well out together in non-vintage bty(save my 1930's heirloom Elgin watch with a band by Jutta Neuman - what can I say my girl has great taste). Upon entering much to my suprise I was immediately complimented on my jeans bty which suprised me as they are not japanese selvage denim and did not cost $270 - ok they were a sample and probably did - again thanks to the lady).

This place is fantastic. No ambient e enduced dj stylings, no espresso, no chicks, just great people, great service and great product (finally can replace my Sharp's Kid Glove after shave). I left feeling clean, refreshed and yes a bit better for the ware for the record. While leaving (tip a little more than Super Cuts boys, trust me it'll make you feel better) Sam gave me a nice goodbye, by name. I'll be going back soon.

Freemans Sporting Club, 8 Rivington St

by Darlo

I've been 3 times now, 3 different "stylists" 3 completely different haircuts. None of which I asked for. I gave a general idea of what I wanted and expected a little advice, I got a few nods and platitudes and then each one proceded to cut my hair either haphazardly with no shape or style or too short and basic. Why did I go back 3 times? Basically the hype! I convinced myself that they knew what they were doing. Wrong. I won't be making the same mistake again. The staff are friendly enough, but I think the continual banter between them distracts from what they are supposed to be doing. (cutting hair, if you're reading this guys) There are plenty of cheap barbers that will give as good or better cuts. For the record, Shorty is not one of the 3 and seems to get good reviews.

  • Pros: Friendly boys club
  • Cons: Basic barbershop cut for $50

I Finally Found Shorty

by RJHuffman

It took 3 years of looking for a good barber in NYC. I finally found him! My co-worker spoke highly of his Barber Shorty at Freemans barbershop, I had heard other friends talk about their barber Shorty, so I decided to give it a try. I was very happy with the cut. He seemed to know exactly what I wanted done, with very little explanation. If you are in search of a great haircut go see Shorty at Freeman's Barbershop.

  • Pros: Shorty
  • Cons: a little out of the way

cool clothes, hot staff, great space, savvy barbers

by BoBoStaR

this place is the best. i've been getting my hair cut at freemans for over a year now. the barbers know what they're doing. i've gotten a cut from nearly all of them. shorty is great, van's got great hands, ivan's the man, there's a rather odd gent with a very impressive moustache who gives great shaves, joey's very good. they also have some very nice products, "sutlery" as they call them. nice one chaps, great stuff.

  • Pros: great barbershop, clothes, staff. FORTEMENT RECOMMANDE!!!!
  • Cons: none to speak of. tout etait a mon aimer.

Really wanted to like this place

by samosamo

I had been in the store a few times, and loved it. I wanted to buy everything, but couldn't afford anything so I decided to come back when I was ready for a haircut. Went there yesterday and now I wish I hadn't. $40 for a haircut that is lop-sided and uneven (and not in some hipster way). Next time I'm going to stick with the $14 place down the street from me. At least that will come out even.

  • Pros: Cool shop, great products
  • Cons: bad cut

my man is sexier than ever

by 888j

He told me that he was going to check out this new barbershop recently and I was concerned. Ever since we've been dating I took him to my salon. To my surprise it was the best hair cut I've seen on him! He really enjoyed the experience! They were quick and to the point but have the artistic talent needed. I strongly recommend this for any guy either for his own needs or to impress a certain someone!

unhappy

by Mberhman

I went to this place after being told that it was the best barbershop in New York.

I was unhappy from the very start. Ivon cut my hair. He would not listen to me,He told me the way I wanted my haircut was wrong, and cut it the way he wanted. and I had to go to another barber shop to get it fixed.

I would not suggest going here
