Great brunch spot
by mington
Beet omelet and eggs florentine are very good. The side of fruit is also unique and tasty.
- Pros: good food
- Cons: tight seating
re: going downhill
by curiousepicurean
This used to be my favorite brunch spot.
Ordered the mediterranean plate. The eggs were overdone, and more than hardbolied. Prosciutto was cut too thick, fruit on plate was 3 days old. Reordered the fruit, the grapes were just as rotten. There was no sauce or spread of any kind on the plate to bring the dish all together. If you say "fresh fruit", you should put slices of melon on the plate, not the same brown fruit you use to make the fruit compote.
And the coffee, clean the coffee maker, would ya? Undrinkable!
The bathroom needs to be upkept too, water was scalding hot in sink, the sink was really beat up, and in need of replacement too. The rain was clogged and the water, just kind of sat there in a brown muck.
Clean up your act Ovelia! I will give you one more shot, please make it better!
One good thing, tho... great bartender, good bloodymaries!
Don't let success let the restaurant goto your head, clean up your act Ovelia!
Will be back, one more time, see you again soon!
- Pros: not as eurotrashy as the rest of 30th ave, good bloody mary
- Cons: coffee, have let the place go.rotten fruit
Great Place to Eat, Drink and Hang out
by Kleandrou
Ovelia is the only place in Astoria with an indoor and outdoor bar. We always have alot of fun and love the food. My favorite party nights have been spent there.
- Pros: Friendly Atmosphere and Great Food
- Cons: NONE
Good dinner, warm night
by fionaswim
We had a nice meal a couple of nights ago when the weather was warm-sat outside, which may have attributed to the groups of LOUD people next to us. Not loud having a good time, but obnoxious loud. Started with the garlic potato dip which was delicious. We enjoy being left alone when having dinner, however sometimes the wait between checking in on the table was a bit long. We had the mousaka and just a grilled shriimp with sauteed spinach which was done nicely-I would have liked to see the what the spinach was cooked in strained from the dish a little more, but over all done well.
- Pros: comfortable, friendly waitstaff
- Cons: loud tables next to us
Great Greek Fusion
by figaro67
I started going to this place right after it opened and I have never had a bad meal here. I go here a couple times a month and I ALWAYS order the homemade Greek sausage...it is to DIE for! I almost always have the appetizer that has the dipping sauces and the pita is amazing. The cocktails are great too, although the wine list could be a bit more extensive. The only drawback that I found was the DJ. He doesn't start until after 10PM or so, but the music was so loud that I couldn't hear my friends that I was dining with. Just make sure you go earlier than 10PM and you'll be fine. Friendly staff, great food, what's not to like?
- Pros: Great food and drinks...don't forget to try the sausage
- Cons: Music after 10PM
Worst in all of Queens!
by Lee3377
#1 The food is not cooked correctly....ordered my steak medium rare, came out almost well done.
#2 Had two other tables on the restaurant (on a Friday) and the music was unbearable loud.
#3 Apps took over 15 minutes, we ordered pita and dips. Really?
#4 Wine was mediocre at best, cocktails were weak.
#5 Not one apology was made about our obvious irritation of the sub par experience.
#6 The oorly cooked food that we eventually got was still bland and chewy.
- Pros: right by my house
- Cons: terrible food, rude managers
Great local favorite...
by astorianewbee
I've been to Ovelia like 4 times & have no complaints. I mean, I've only had apps & desert, but I was more than happy with all of it. Their crepes are sooooo good & their frappes are perfect. The waitresses are always nice & attentive, even with me & my picky friends! The place is modern w/ nice decor & the bathroom is always clean (which says a lot about a restaurant). I'm moving to this neighborhood soon & plan on being even more of a regular.
- Pros: open air feeling
- Cons: none, really
a nice brunch spot
by mckinley30
Tried out this new-ish Astoria spot for brunch on July 4. Sat on the sidewalk -- comfy chairs. $14 gets you a meal plus a drink (mimosa or bloody mary) plus juice or coffee. The Bloody Marys were nice & spicy. The Ovelia Omelette was not your typical omelette (eggplant, walnut, & peppers were placed on top of the egg, not mixed in -- still tasty). My mom ordered one of their tiropita sandwiches (chicken, halloumi, tomato) -- looked delicious. The homemade sausage got good reviews, and I liked their option of braised fruit in lieu of home fries. Coffee was disappointing - more bodega than cafe, but I would definitely go back to this place for brunch or a drink. Service was nice and low-key -- didn't feel bothered.
- Pros: tasty bloody mary, value
- Cons: mediocre coffee
Nice atmosphere, but it ends there

I have been to Ovelia quite a lot actually, my wife and I live on the block and go there for brunch at least once or twice a month, and I have also gone for dinner and lunch as well. We were always attracted to the ambiance, decor, roominess of it all, but I have to say as of late, it has just been downright dissapointing. I understand every restaraunt goes through growing pains, and we all have "off" nights, but my latest dining experience was the icing on the cake. I brought my wife and sister for lunch. My sister told the waitress that she is a vegetarian, and she replied "Oh that's too bad" as if my sister had done something wrong. Whether or not she meant to, she came off as very rude and disrespectful. Furthermore, of all the food we ordered, the pita was the only part we enjoyed. The shrimp in my wife's salad was extremely overcooked and lacked flavor, actually it tasted to me like it was frozen at one point - BIG no no. I ordered the portobello burger thinking I was getting a lighter meal, but the bread was so hard I couldn't even bite into it, and there was so much goat cheese on it, it was just... overkill. I guess it did end up being a light lunch because the grilled vegetables and side salad were the only edible parts of the meal. Finally, we ordered a frozen cheesecake for dessert. Frozen is an understatement, a chainsaw wouldn't have been able to cut that thing. The bits that we were able to chisel off with a steak knife tasted so strongly of freezerburn, the three of us couldn't even finish half. At the end we just paid the check, and decided that the next time we wanted lunch, we'd take the walk down to cafe bar instead.
- Pros: It looks nice, is never too crowded
- Cons: Food was disgusting
