not everything that glimmers is true gold

by iheartnycbars

This place has one of the toughest doors in the city. Brooklyn bred Johnny boy guards that door as if it was his sister’s purity. He has even gone on record saying that he has denied his childhood friends entry (I am talking about the bar here). Once you finally get in, you feel as if you were in Donatella Versace and Christian Audigier´s den. Gold and skulls galore. (It is not as bad or tacky as it sounds.) The party doesn’t get rolling till late and Sundays the crowd is a tad more diverse. (aka a bit less eurotrashy). Occasional celebrity spottings can occur. If you manage to get past Johnny, it can be fun. But just remember that not everything that glimmers is true gold. (fool’s gold bar?!?)

Awesome Door!!

by CSMobileUser

I recently went to GoldBar and noticed that the grungy looking guy at the door was in a music video I had just seen recently. I think it was called Turn Away. It was a great video and we had a great time at the bar. Much love to the dirtbag doorman!!

GoldBar, door access finally revealed!!!

by Wakafaluka

I read a lot about Gold Bar before finally giving it a try, so I went 3 weeks ago. I was star struck as soon as I got out of my cab. I see this guy at the door, and im saying to myself, I know him, I know him. It was Jon Lennon. I recognized him for his awesome video on You Tube called "Turn Away". I told him how much I liked the video and his music. He let me in right away and sat me down in the beautiful seat right at the bar. He told me, he'll always save 2 seats for me. So naturally Im thinking he's joking. I go back the other night, Jon saw me walking down the block towards the bar, he gestured to come towards him. As I did, he opened the ropes and let me right in and once again sat me in the same seat! Dirtbag he may be, but that dirtbag knows how to take care of his fans. If your having a hard time getting in, compliment him about his video.....and by all means, check the video out. Its really good!! Kudos to the dirtbag!

  • Pros: Exclusive place = exclusiive people. No bums. Awesome drinks. Great management.
  • Cons: Other than the look of the guy at the door (he has that dirtbag look), there are no cons. And that dirtbag is a gentleman. Don't let the grime and lack of showers fool you.

5 GOLD STARS FOR GOLDBAR

by NYCSHOSTOPPER

"Out on the town, Goldbar shuttin it down." a line from one of celebrity Nas songs. I became curious as to what and where Goldbar was located so i asked a few friends to take me. We arrived early around 9:30pm for an Addidas party thrown by a young and upcoming sneaker industry head named Ronnie. (whom did a great job at hosting and created a great new addias sneaker: "Black Tie" which i most definately will be purchasing) The party was outrageous. We walked right in without a problem. Mens ties were replaced with custom ties (by unbelieveably gorgeous women) when first entering the door (of course they kept thier own ties). and when we got past coat check and opened the grand glass doors we entered a room filled with fabulously looking people all conversing and having a great time. the decor was fabulous if you ask me - it gave you that rich feel with a hip hop twist. the gold chains droping to the floor from the cieling, the grand chandeliers, the king high throne chairs, the lavish couches and cartier tables were fabulous. not to mention the paintings on the walls were of upperclass people wearing the hip hop chains. Fantastic!! the music was amazing and so was the service. Disregaurd all previous negative comments. Losers wont get in. NOT Goldbars fault. If you ask me, its a great place for models, higher industry leaders, celebrities, the fabulous. Dont name it "trashy" because they keep the TRASH on the street. if you dont get in just keep it movin'. I am sure youll find somewhere else to party. Go to Goldbar - the worst that can happen is you wont get in. Have fun! I know I did.

  • Pros: EVERYTHING.
  • Cons: They wouldnt let you take pictures :( that was the only bummer of the night - but expected in a High Class place.

Best time I've had in a while

by lamb75

Not sure why this place got such bad reviews from other people- especially those that never went inside? I went there with 3 girlfriends and we had an amazing time and found the staff to be incredibly friendly and accomodating. I absolutely loved it and would definitely go back- great music, fun crowd, friendly staff. I highly recommend!!!

An utterly decadent, treasure chest-like bar with liquor for loot.

by Contributor

In Short
Velvet ropes would not suffice to guard this alcove of unadulterated bling--instead, the glamour-thirsty who trek to Little Italy are confronted by gold chains at the door. The gilded design philosophy continues inside, where hundreds of gold-painted human skulls adorn the walls and smaller gold chains drape from the ceiling to form a sheath separating the front area, featuring throne-like chairs, from the booths and tables (custom-made to look like large stacks of Cartier bracelets) in the back. Decadence is evident everywhere, even on the cocktail menu--drinks, at $18 a pop, are as precious as the surroundings.

Hits: Although bottle service is an option in the back area, it's not necessary to claim a seat at a table--a nice change from policies at similarly exclusive clubs.

Misses: The decor, while eye-catching and certainly original, borders dangerously on tacky. It's overdone on all levels.

There is cool and trendy, and GoldBar is far from either...

by yanal1974

OK, so I heard lots of mixed reviews about this place (mostly negative), but being the stubborn person that I am, I wanted to see for myself. I was hosting a crew of British and Russian girlfriends in town (who, btw, have more money then the entire GoldBar owners combined), so I called the place and asked if I cold get a couple tables. The awfully rude trashy nobody basically told me if I dont have a personal invite from a manager or owner, then I must not be important enough to be invited... ok, so my interest ended there in this trashy place... however, it was not the end...

Few days later we actually ended up there because one of the Russian girls was begging us to go there meet a friend of hers, who (after about 30 min) was finally able to get us in (as reluctant as we were to go in, she was a visiting friend and we wanted to accommodate her). Have I mentioned there was no people in line at the door besides us??? yeah... so, the ugly trashy girl at the door had SUCH attitude, I actually thought she was possessed... I actually had to come some of my Russian friends down, because they were ready to show her what we do to trash like her where we come from...

Once inside we got a table in addition to our friend's table, ordered LOTS of drinks, only to be kicked out of the table when some anorexic (and i am certain underage) girls showed up and were all over the manager and other staff... we actually couldn't believe the audacity of the staff to treat money spending clientele like that...

GoldBar - not recommended to anyone who has class, as it is for trash only. I suggest they rename the place Trash Only, it will be more appropriate... Will NEVER set my foot their again...
