Great atmosphere, really bad bartender

by korenR

If you're looking to host a corporate get-together in a bar for about 40 people early in the evening, this is ideal. It's central, beautiful and has a nice feel to it. In this economy, you'd think the bartender would be charming the pants off a whole bunch of thirsty ladies. Instead, we got surly, holier-than-thou treatment last night.

  • Pros: Beautifully designed space, warm and inviting
  • Cons: Mediocre wine selection, bad attitude bartender

The food was JUST Magnificent

by alexastar

We brought two good friends here who had done us an unexpected significant favor. It was all of our first time at the Amalia , and it was simply marvelous. The service really stood out as top notch. They were attentive but not overbearing. Everything went just as it should have with them carefully watching us and pacing the courses. We never felt rushed. It is a lovely space that is cozy but very relaxing. It is not too formal. The food was just magnificent. I did enjoy the touted flexibility of ordering the number of courses i wanted, and picking exactly what. I got two appetizers, then a main. Most importantly, it was a perfect night out (and we don't get out much). We recommend it highly. Truly.

I Am A Real Reviewer

by qtgurljny

I've been reading reviews on the restaurant that mangement is posting "fake" reviews. I know that goes on and think it's shameful. Whether that's happened here, I don't know but, trust me, I am a real foodie. So Amalia is located in the aptly named Dream Hotel and one step inside and you are really whisked away into a dream. The decor is modern without being too cold or rigid, incorporating things such as a beautiful mosaic, back-lit stairway. It's truly a beautiful space. My skepticism comes out when places are really beautfiul because the glitz always outweighs the kitchen but, in this case, I though the food was really good! I was getting nervous because of all the negative reviews. Mainly sticking to appetizers as I found them more ineteresting than the entrees, I had the Tausoff Salad, which was a good arugula salad, and the lamb meatballs which were good, but def had a mediterrean touch to it. The cauliflower and apple soup I heard was excellent and the sauce that accompanies the Bistro Frities are really good. My dining companions raved about their tuna, and short rib entrees respectively. In short, I still think the beauty might outweigh the kitchen by a tad bit, but once you get comfortable in here, I don't htink you'll care.

Good food

by wtaw71

This is a good place for a quick dinner after work (Midtown). The food is great, service is a little unpredictable but never bad. I have been there three times for dinner and food has been consistently great. The Chilean Sea Bass is yummy, the crab cake is good as well. I have also been there a few times for drinks, it's not bad.

  • Pros: Great food
  • Cons: Service is average

Great food, good vibe

by lindsayjo

I've been to this spot a couple of times for drinks and always enjoy the decor and the cocktails. Finally had dinner recently and it was absolutely fantastic! The pork tenderloin is to-die-for and the service was great though they did seem to be out of a couple of wines that I was interested in trying. Regardless, it was a great time and I definately plan to return for more!

  • Pros: atmosphere, food, cocktails, DJ downstairs
  • Cons: very busy servers, crowded

Have to agree w bad reviews; this place is not worth a visit

by dmemmolo

The service and kitchen need to be re-worked here. Food came out in the wrong order and was cold when it got to us. We had to send entrees back because the meat was raw (in one case) and simply cold (in the other). We are pretty sure they just stuck the plates under a warmer and didn't even try to re-cook or re-do the dishes. When they came back, they were still bad and the steak was unedible and rubbery. We sent it back a second time and just decided to leave. This is not a restaurant for New Yorkers -- leave it to the tourists staying at the Dream Hotel. Oh, and don't believe the phony reviews that the management is leaving on CitySearch -- if it reads like an ad, not a real experience, it is!

  • Pros: None I can think of
  • Cons: Bad, cold food served with bad, cold service

Stylistically delicious!!!!

by akostas

Upon walking into this restaurant, you get the sense immediately that you're in for a real experience. Cozy yet uber-chic, with a really intimate bar that is conducive to conversation. Bartenders really know how to mix a cocktail here.....very special.

The food is amazingly good.....the calamari is to die for and the lamb meatballs are decadently delish!! Wine selection is interesting and varied.....something for everyone and every mood.

What's great about this restaurant is it's the perfect place for dinner for two OR a night out with bunch of friends....the space and ambience really lends itself to both.

I will come here again and again!

  • Pros: Ambience, Cuisine, Service
  • Cons: NONE

AMALI - GREAT FOOD - GREAT ATMOSPHERE!

by jam27

Read many interesting write-ups on this place in recent months so wife and i decided to investigate. I must say the place is incredibly beautiful and a bit intimidating at first but the staff made us feel relaxed and comfortable. The crab appetizer was very good and my sliced steak over marinaded red peppers and greens was superb. The service is good though a little laid-back. The wine list is pretty extensive but our waiter led us to a bottle of Borolo that we enjoyed so much, we slipped desserts and ordered a second botlle and a cheese plate. Definitely will be back again and bring some friends. Check out the downstairs...cool wine cellar vibe with low lighting and chandeliers.

  • Pros: Unique Quality Food and Service, Great looking space
