I have thick, coarse curly hair and always have a hard time finding a hairdresser who knows how to handle it. I've been to several other expensive salons in the city, and I can honestly say that Sonya has give me the best haircut I've ever gotten! She asks a lot of questions about your hair/styling habits to begin with so she knows exactly how to go about the cut. She also takes an extremely sculptural, or 3-dimensional approach to cutting hair so it looks amazing from all angles. Most hairdressers have always told me to keep my hair long, in order to calm it down, but Sonya decided that a short cut would be better and I've never been so pleased. My hair has never been so short but it looks fabulous due to her cut. I got compliment after compliment after the first time I went to her, and I will NEVER go to anyone else if I can help it!! On top of her amazing abilities in the salon, she sends all of her clients a follow-up e-mail with tips and name of styling products that she recommends for your personal hair type. And you can always e-mail her with questions, comments, new products that you've discovered, and she'll get right back to you...talk about personal service!! I really can't say enough good things about Sonya, not only in terms of her talent but her warm personality. If you have curly hair, you will be a new person after one of her amazing cuts!!

Sonya is an expert with curly hair and I won't be going anywhere else after the amazing cut she gave me. She spent a lot of time talking to me about the cut, what I wanted from it, how I usually style my hair, etc. She is also a fair price and a great chat. So, go see for yourself! You will leave happy, I am positive.
Pros: great haircut, no fuss
Cons: none!

I've been to many highly recommended (and expensive) salons all over NYC, and never had cuts and color as good as the ones Sonya provides. If you want to grow your hair long, she will help. After years of being a blonde, I decided to go back to my natural color last year, and she never tried to persuade me not to even though it meant less money for her. She also expertly fixed a hair disaster created by another salon. Her prices are reasonable, and everything about the experience is positive. In addition, she's an extremely nice person who's always fun to catch up with.
Pros: Great cut, color, reasonable prices, relaxed atmosphere
Cons: None

After getting a bad haircut from Astor place (I just wanted a trim and I lost 4 inches and any semblance of a style) making a bad situation worse with a home hair dye disaster, and getting turned away for color correction by a different colorist, I came across Sonya's reviews (while frantically searching for color correction services). I have somewhat dry, color treated, curly hair that is still quite long despite the recent loss of inches. I read the other positive reviews and decided to try Sonya. She was so helpful from start to finish. She returned my frantic phone call and brought me in the next morning. As soon as I got there I was greeted with a warm, reassuring smile and a consultation that explained what we would do. She spent time getting to understand the texture of my hair and then went to work. I received consultation, a cut, color correction, deep conditioning treatment, and styling, followed by dry cut touch up and advice on how to style my hair and which products will work - all for a very reasonable $220 (cuts cost $95). She is going to email me the product list and invited me to come back any time this week if there is anything I'm not happy about so she can fix it for free. I know I won't have to though - I have gotten several compliments on my hair already today and its only been a few hours since I had it cut. I guess my hair disaster happened for a reason. I have found my stylist and won't go anywhere else. Make an appointment a week in advance and be aware, the salon is on the second floor and easy to miss.
Pros: service, atmosphere, value
Cons: none

I went to get my haircut by Sonya in December. After weeks of researching salons/stylists specializing in curly hair. I decided to go to Sonya. There were several reasons why. It was mostly about the positive feedback she had already received, but also about the cost. Who wants to overpay for their first time with a totally different hair dresser? I've gone to so many different people in the past. They've thinned my hair out, they've straightened. I gone through so many conditioning treatments, but never has anyone shown me how to beautify the natural state of my hair. Until Sonya. Not only is she one of the nicest hair dressers I've ever met, but she's also the most knowledgeable and informative. She totally changed the way that I style my hair. Now instead of always putting it up in a ponytail or bun I can wear it down. I get compliments all the time on how healthy and beautiful my hair looks. It's a great feeling to know to have a hair dresser that you can finally trust.

The haircut I got from Sonya is the only one I have ever liked! Before Sonya cut my hair it was frizzy, unmanageable and always an embarrasement to me. I always wore it pinned up because it either looked like a bowling ball or a triangle when let loose- it was totally unflattering. After Sonya cut my hair it was transformed! It frames my face, the curls are soft and natural and no more frizz! She showed me how to style it with very little effort and recommended great products. For the first time I am wearing my hear "down". I no longer pull it back and try to hide it. I love my haircut, and I love Sonya. She is very personable and a pleasure to work with. After my appointment she even sent me an email reviewing the products she had suggested during my appointment. Thank you, Sonya. I can't wait for my next haircut! You are a gem!
Pros: Great cut, wonderful personality, pleasant environment, reasonable price
Cons: None

I went to Sonya for a haircut for the first time a couple weeks ago, and can now confidently say this is the best cut I’ve had in years (and honestly, probably ever.) To let you know a little of my “hair background”, I have bi-racial black/white curly hair, frizzy without product. I finally learned, thanks to Lorraine Massey’s book Curly Girls, how to take care of it. I thought this love would extend to her salon Devachan; it sadly did not. I came away with otherwise boring cuts, often longer on one side than the other. A cut at Christo fared no better. Except that it left my hair screaming for moisture (I ponytailed it as soon as I left), it wasn’t evident that anything had been done. I then did some sleuthing on citysearch and came across many glowing reviews for Sonya (I even wondered if she asked people to write such nice things—she doesn’t). I decided to take a chance, and thank goodness. She’s amazing, friendly, and talented! We talked about what I wanted, and she understood perfectly. Even though she did all the work, I somehow felt like we were creating something together. She did most of the cutting dry, and some shaping up after wetting it. And it turned out beautifully (I’d brought a picture of what I wanted, and though I decided not to pull it out, my cut was exactly the same)! I’ve received compliments from everyone, and often from the same people who just can’t get over how great it looks. One extremely judgmental co-worker just said yesterday my new haircut made her want to go back to curly hair. So, my thanks to Sonya!
Pros: Tremendous skill, no long wait for appointments, fun atmosphere
Cons: None

I've been going to Sonya for the last 5 years. I would never even think of going anywhere else. She is very talented and her haircuts are always consistent and exactly what I want. She is also one of the sweetest people I know, and I always look forward to seeing her. Lauren Pearl

I had been growing out my very short hair for about 2 years before I started going to Sonya and I could never quite get past the "Ringo" phase. Sonya worked her magic and now my hair is almost at my shoulders, full of body and I have discovered I have waves and volume I never even knew about! I get compliments all the time and Sonya has given me the most natural and easy to deal with highlights ever! Sonya has also done my hair for events. My hair looked awesome even though it was torrentially down pouring the day of the event. She also gave me great make-up tips to go with the new do. She is a gem!!!
Pros: Easy to schedule appointments with
Cons: none!
