eurotrashy nasty waitstaff

by deejayspicerack

it was uniquely euro trash, the waiter literally shoved me out of the way while I was waiting for the bathroom which is inconveniently located next to the bar. if i had my way i would've spit in his mouth, but .. have to be lady like so i just ran up a tab, and ran out... not worth the costly drinks & food when some rude waiter who relies on your tips to live, physically assaults you, a patron. this is the kind of place that gives new york a bad name.

Horrible Attitude

by carpy2000

What a great place to have such toads own and operate it. We were on vacation for two days, catching some local culture and tripped into Smith & Mills. The first drink order took a half an hour to receive after requesting the same order three times from two different people. Odd thing: There were only 8 people in the place. When a drink was set o the bar, the bartender looked at my wife and said, "Is there something wrong with it?" in a mean snooty way, to which she replied "OTher than the fact it's not mine, no." The rest of the next hour and a half only went down from there. Some people pay extra for the abuse, for us, we enjoy a faint smile, a genuine interest in delivering an order, and not being questioned when our friends left (With their baby mind you) "Hey, are they going to pay?"--I was going to pay the whole tab anyway...how many couples with a baby stiff the bartender? (Hey, maybe this is a great new ploy for all those with babies!). Just say no to this place unless you want to poke your head in, take a look then go open something similar down the street and make a mint and take their business.

  • Pros: London Bomb Shelter Vibe

great ambience, good for drinks, better for brunch

by kk359

love this place when it's not too crowded...feels like a french bomb shelter from ww2 where you'll have your last drink before the luftwafa drops one on you....thats a compliment. Also like the old style elevator that;'s been turned into a bathroom(did u notice?).

Too many hipsters seemed to be bused in from Bklyn on most nites, some celebrities, sat across from Jude Law and Cameron Diaz there a few months ago, she had to wait while I was taking a leak in the elevator bathroom. Also went there for brunch. Very simple food, they cook off a hotplate it seems, but good brunch date place

  • Pros: romantic when not too crowded, good brunch
  • Cons: dirty beer drinking hipsters from brooklyn

Nice decor, horrible attitude and expensive

by avamarie123

I went to sit at the bar last Thursday night. I loved the decor however the bartender with the 1920's moustache and especially the cook with the glasses behind the bar both had horrible attitudes. Had to ask 3 times for the menu (until finally the cook gave in and leaned over 1 foot to retrieve it - must have put him out) and the bartender was so unfriendly they seemed to want to be going for that pretentious bartender attitude. Not sure how this place will continue to get customers this way or make people want to spend $6 for a tiny glass of beer (no pints here). There are too many other bars and restaurants where they actually want to treat their customers well. The bartender and cook should get over themselves.

  • Pros: Nice decor
  • Cons: Service and Value

great cocktail joint

by brooklynminx

Definitely something special. Killer space, good crowd, great cocktails, awesome bartender, and sucky waitress. I have never met anyone with more gaul and nerve that makes her living in the "service" industry. Walk in with friends order from the bar grab a seat. 5 minutes later black hair girl sitting next to us stubs out her cigarette puts down her drink and comes over and gives us attitude because we didn't order our drinks from her. Anyway still had a blast will be back. needs help with their service people.

  • Pros: decor, drinks and crowd

Great Space, Bad Waitress

by Digitrix6

I love this place. I would go back again and again. It is tiny, so I hope only some of you go there too. But seriously, a great vibe.

One problem: black haired waitress. Bad attitude. Has managed to ruin several consecutive evenings. I have better things to do than complain about waitstaff, so please don't think I'm just bored. I feel compelled to write to say -- this woman is horrid. Chased me down the street to complain I had not paid. Except I had. In cash. WIth a 40% tip. Which she would have discovered, had she taken the time to turn the bill over and look for the money paper clipped to it, the way money is usually clipped to the bill.

I would have overlooked that incident, except soon after I brought my best friend here for his 40th b-day. She was so appallingly rude that we all felt compelled to leave. I must reiterate -- I brought someone here for his birthday because I thought the bar was so great, and we left because the waitress drove us off with her out-of-control nastiness.

Go here for a low-key after-work drink. Leave immediately if pierced-lip black-haired girl tries to serve you.

  • Pros: Cool bathrooms, quality drinks

Awesome, but please stay away.

by jcs81

This place is gold. (How lame for someone to bash this place as having a "sucky crowd" based on one visit and one customer. Glad she won't be back) This place has such a great vibe I can hardly stay away, but I hope that some of you reading this will, in fact, stay away. Smith & Mills (we call it S&M) is the kind of place that defines "hidden gem", so I am really hoping that it remains a "secret". S&M is also the kind of place that evidences the still undiscovered lower downtown scene. Places like Gold Street, Stone Street, and Front Street. Haven't been? Check 'em out. Anyway, back to S&M, this is a cool spot. And you will feel it the moment you walk in the door. Period.

  • Pros: Staff, they care about the food and drinks, awesome vibe, cool music
  • Cons: Cozy

Perfection in every way

by photomaven

If you're in need of a cute, classic bar without the drama and an annoying scene, you must check out Smith & Mills. The drinks are excellent. The bartenders are very cute, modest and friendly. They also have delicious food. Trust me- spend your time and your money there. You won't be disappointed. After work is probably the most fun time to go. Who's knows, you might meet your next great lover at the booth next to you?

warm hosts and atmosphere

by jenninyc

smith and mills is the perfect place for a cozy low-pro drink downtown, especially now that hibernation/snuggle up with a scotch season is upon us. I'm puzzled by this other review, cause in my experience the family responsible for the smith & mills/beatrice inn establishments (especially the sister) has been nothing but gracious and welcoming. I almost wonder if this patron didn't encounter an imposter!

Sucky Crowd

by nikias

My boyfriend had been to Smith and Mills and liked the dark, intimate atmosphere, so he suggested that we try it together. Upon first glance i liked the bar. However, the crowd was obnoxious. I understand that the bar is very small (which is one of the things i like about it), but that does not mean that you can use the person next to you as a bar stool. This girl was leaning against me for about a minute before i said something. She also had her hair in a hideous high ponytail and kept swinging it on me. When i politely asked her if she could please move over, she copped a huge attitude and told me to move over . Too bad there was nowhere for me to move since i was sitting squarely in front of the table we had been given. She loudly talked about me to her friends as if i was not there. when i told her to address me directly if she had a problem, she said "my brother owns this place" in a rude voice, to which i responded "if my brother owned this place i would be nicer to the patrons to encourage business. he must not have a very supportive sis." I got up to leave after finishing my drink and she followed me out of the bar. I'm sorry, is this high school? I normally would not judge a place on the clients, but being that they are family and she might hang there alot, id say just forgo the experience. there are too many other cute, intimate bars in ny to waste your time sitting next to loser like this (the people she was with sucked too). The owner should just prohibit his low class sister from entering his establishment so he doesnt lose business at a bar that has potential to be cool.
